Lance Timmering, a student from a Stevens county high school, was accused of planning a school massacre by the school's administrators. The 17-year-old high school student was arrested after the principal found one of the student's notebooks that detailed designs to shoot up to 30 of his classmates.

But according to Timmering and his parents, the Northport High School student was simply designing his own first-person shooter game and exercising his freedom of speech. According to the report, two teacher's aides also overheard Timmering talking about his ideas for a shooting game. Although the ideas were alarming, Timmering admitted that he had never thought of putting his ideas into action.

Just late last Monday, Timmering made bail and is now free from jail. Timmering's parents have claimed that the events and arrests were politically driven, although the school district said that they had to take every potential threat seriously, even if they claimed they had no way of knowing whether or not Timmering’s ideas were just harmless creativity or an actual plan for another school shooting massacre.

» What they should of done.

If your worried about a kid then they should of gone and talked to him and maybe brought a psychologist.
The would then see a kid has just made a map resembling the real world it's not like they would ever arrest tony hawks for depicting a school or any of the other companies or kids at home who created content resembling real life.
That kid should be suing the school board for false arrest and emotional trauma, in a legal sense he never made any kind of threat so I don't see how he was even arrested. So maybe there's also something we aren't being told.
but if this kid was only spoken to I'm sure they could of ascertained the truth, instead of jumping the gun.

» lmao, this reminds me of my days back in Jr. High

one of my friends was always jokingly saying, "that's it, you're on my list now." and writing their name on a piece of paper because they were acting like idiots.... one of them didn't know it was a joke and turned him in. Needless to say, my friend got the week off from school >_

» It was wrong in all aspects...

Excuse the mild language, but he's almost a damn big boy now... Did he seriously think it was in any way appropriate to discuss such things as well as have his notebook with sketchings and notes left in an area at school where it could be found, so soon after the VT Incident?!

Yes the school system jumped the gun, they could have brought him in for questioning or to a psycologist, something... The first resort was an arrest?

We just dont know what the f*ck we're doing over here do we?

 » Not cut and dry

This type of thing is going to be getting more and more common. Kids are growing up in an age where there's 2 important piece of information for them: be original but be careful. Say the kid really was just making a FPS shooter map. "Well, he shouldn't have done it of his school!" Why? What better place to make the setting than someplace you're familiar with? You could make it very realistic, and that's what real developers strive for.

At the same time, what if he really was going to use it for practiced killing? A few posters before me have it right: should have been brought in for a psychological evaluation before being arrested. So, be original, but be careful.

And school officials? Seriously, you need to find a happy medium in common sense between "Oh, no one will ever shoot the school up" and "OMG EVERY KID HAS T3H GUN5555."

 » I understand why...

I understand why the school acted the way they did but that doesn't make it right in the least =P By "jumping the gun" as you guys put it they actually are hurting a lot more people and this is going to have long term affects on everyone but as I said, I understand why their doing this =P The school has to look at whats best for everyone, but yes, they should have had him checked out BEFORE calling the police =P I know for a fact that Lance Timmering would never hurt a soul ^.^ and the thing is, all the teachers have known him since he started school as a tiny boy and they all know that he'd NEVER be able to do something like that =P
How has it come to the point where no one trusts anyone and children can't just be children? We all do stupid things when we're younger lol

 » *sigh*

Well, his trial is Friday and please keep your fingers crossed that it's going to go good and that the judge will see that he's innocent *which he is of what they are charging him of*
This is all really stupid since if he was just a few years older they wouldn't think a thing about it =P

Everything you have to say about this boy is wrong. You don't know him i am in the same school he is in and he would never do such a thing.
