Square Enix talks on Microsoft relationship - Image 1

Exclusive games grant platforms a great advantage over the competition. Which is probably why Square Enix became the subject of a lot of speculation when they announced the development of the Final Fantasy XIII, the latest of the Final Fantasy franchise.

A major part of Square's games have been developed for the PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii and DS; the Sony and Nintendo platforms. So it should come to no surprise that people would want to know what's up with Square and Microsoft.

Which doesn't mean they haven't worked on games together. One of the more popular Square Enix games on the Xbox 360 is Final Fantasy 11. The studio also has The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery coming up for the platform.

Square Enix's Yoichi Wada was recently interviewed with Nikkei on the matter:

If there is a merit cooperating with Microsoft we will do this. We might give some projects to separate studios and make games for the X360.

The Main Platforms for Square Enix are the Nintendo Platforms and PS3. The Lionshare of the Developers and our infrastructure as well as our capital is for NDS, Wii and PS3 and this is not going to change.

We are astonished by Wiis success and the Nintendo dominance. We thought that the PS3 and the Wii will coexist due to the difference between both strategies, but in the end the users will decide which platform we develop on. The SCE Platforms at this point are a bit of a challenge.

We think we can do much on the Wii. I talked to Iwata to exploit many possibilities and cheer on him

So it seems that Square Enix has no qualms with the Xbox 360, and are probably only waiting for a good project for the platform. This is no guarantee we'll see a shift to the platform of course, but at the least we know it's not a foregone idea.

praising the Wii. Sorry guys but the Wii isn't going to be able to handle FFXII let alone anything past that. You can just throw out your ideas of keeping fans by tossing out the "FF IS ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL" way of doing things in favor of a fad.

   Re: yworob - 2008-01-14
» How can you praise the Wii over the 360.

I have both and I think the Wii mostly sucks. If I was a shareholder in this company I would want to know why they aren't trying to make more money by releasing their games on all platforms. It really doesn't make sense for them to not make money off of the 360.

» What what the F*c* Ever.

The real reasons square wont develop a truly great final fantasy is the same reasons the japanses dont like the 360. It's a Gajin Console.

to make a game for a gajin console would be an instul to their proud RACIST HERITAGE,.

*u*k Squaresoft and their non gajin product supporting asses!!!

Deny it if you want, Everyone knows its frigging true!

   Re: Goobers - 2008-01-13
» have you ever stopped to think?

the main reason they're concentrating on PS3 and Wii isn't because THEY consider it a "gaijin" console... it's because it makes them more money in THEIR market, which is japan.

Final Fantasy has always been a money maker in japan, but not as well outside of japan. to make any final fantasy game requires a lot of money, even more so for multi-platform... something they don't want to risk.

a question for you... look at all the games that sell like crazy in japan... how many of those games have something similar on the 360? and in the few cases there are something similar, how well did those sell, outside of japan?

i don't have to deny anything, it's simple law of economics. make a product and direct it where you think it'll make you the most money.

it's "Gaijin" not gajin.
360 will never be popular in japan anyways.
btw, the japanese aren't racists, they just don't like foreignors, they are just a country who have a real strong sense of nationalism.

@heiwa_ryu- it's "foreigners" not foreignors. Before you go correcting his spelling, make sure you can spell yourself a$swipe.

» The Nazis had a strong sense of nationalism too.

Don't make excuses for the Japanese. I guess you are only considered a racist if you are white. Overall they are good people but they are very racist when it comes to certain things. I respect how they will go out of their way to support Japanese companies and its sad that Americans arent willing to do the same thing.

 » yworob

What the hell are you talking about. it doesn't matter what color you are, you can still be racist.

But Goobers said it perfectly though, its where they think the money will flow in and let me tell ya FF games in Japan hits millions in the first day, it doesn't work the same way outside Japan. Work with your strong places.

   Re: yworob - 2008-01-15
 » I was being sarcastic.

As a white person sometimes when you stick up for yourself or others that are white, people think you are a racist. What I basically meant was that in our society black people can hate white people for stupid reasons and not be considered racist. If a couple of white guys beat up a black guy they will probably be charged with a hate crime while if some black guys beat up a white guy the authorities will look into if the white guy said something to instigate it. People of every ethnicity are racist and I actually think that white people are the least racist of them all.

It's not even about the 360 as a console.

It is and only ever was that it was an americen "gajin" console..

» Well thats good for the 360

I personally dont care if they develope a game for the 360 lol. But one thing I know for sure is that FFX13 wont go to the 360. I would expect a different IP or somthing but thats kind of obvious.

 » Japanese games suck anyways.

Just about every Japanese game I've played recently sucks. They only like characters that look like gay elves and they act like the world revolves around their tiny little series of islands. Americans arent missing out on much.

i like the japanese people they are some are smartest people on this planet. they come up awesome game. and they have one of the coolest history out there.

   Re: yworob - 2008-01-15
» I didn't say the were stupid people.

I just said that they are extremely ethnocentric. I dont know why you think their history is so fascinating or why you think Japanese games are so much fun to play but I guess you like playing a characters that look like gay elves. I actually took Japanese in high school for 3 years and we learned a lot about their history as well as how to speak some Japanese. The Japanese to this day still wont admit to most of the atrocities they committed in during WWII and just letting you know, most of them think they are better than you because they were born Japanese.

 » interesting...

i finally took a look at both Last Remnant and Infinite Discovery... the trailers look pretty good, on par with the trailers for FFXIII... and they are for the 360 (Last Remnant will also be for the PS3).

about the Wii "supporting" FFXIII, he never said they would put FFXIII on the Wii, but it does have enough of a consumer base to warrant putting some games on (Chocobo Dungeon anyone?)... hey, maybe even a first person-ish final fantasy chronicles kind of deal (like Zelda).

so the reality is, they ARE putting some effort into the "gaijin" consoles...

to be honest... i think all the people claiming racism are just making excuses to "hate" squares-enix... i mean, did you EVER like any of their games? if not, why do you care at all?

I'm a BIG S-E fan... even from before they merged, i was a fan of both companies... i just haven't had the time or money to get a PS3 yet... that might change when they release FFXIII.

its Infinite Undiscovery.

 » Japan, racist? LOL

Anyone who thinks Japan is racist against Americans obviously doesn't know the culture of Japan. Yes, they take their traditions and heritage very seriously, but did you also know they're REALLY into American things? Kinda like how alot of Americans love Japanese things. If Japan really hated Americans, they wouldn't have a Disney theme park, would they? Or have "The Governator" in various Soy Sauce commercials? Heck, they buy shirts with english text on them because they "look cool" even if they don't know what the shirt really says. (sound familiar?)

The only reason Xbox didn't do well in japan is because it had nothing Japan liked, same deal with 360, not because they were "Gaijin" consoles. No good software, the hardware won't sell, simple as that.
