sbLast fall, we discovered that Oscar-award winning Steven Spielberg (Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, et. many al.) had signed on with Electronic Arts (Sims 2). Recently, Neil Young of EA (best known as the creator of the first Ultima Online) and Brandon Sheffield of Gamasutra sat down and compared notes on Mr. Spielberg.

According to Young, he and Spielberg - along with first-time game designer Doug Church and special effects designer Ryan Church (no relation) are currently going through the story, which is "what we really want to center on," according to Young. After that, game features are discussed, after which these elements are brought together.

Despite his schedule, Spielberg comes into the EA office every week, and is "pretty conversant in the medium." Young adds, "He plays a lot of games."  Hopefully, Spielberg is bringing more to this (as yet unannounced) game than name recognition. Considering the amount of hours it takes to write, plan, shoot, edit and produce a movie, one wonders where Spielberg finds the time to focus on a project like this, but it will be interesting to see the results.
