Game addictionThere is such a thing as game addiction. And it's serious.

A detox clinic will be opening in Amsterdam, Netherlands for game addicts. The clinic will be offering in-house treatment for people who just can't stay away from playing video games.

Keith Bakker, director of Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants based in Amsterdam, spear-headed this detox program as he believes that video games can be as addictive as drugs or gambling. This program will focus on treating game addiction through discussions with therapists and encouraging these gamers to get interested in alternative activities.

According to Bakker, gaming addiction has several causes and damaging effects on a person. Sometimes, this addiction might have even been caused by the gamers' parents. They give their sons or daughters video games to keep them away from television or to keep them occupied. Some gamers are also trying to escape personal problems when they play. When playing, the brain produces endorphins that give them a high very similar to those felt by gamblers or drug addicts.

This kind of addiction can also result to another addiction: drug dependence. In several cases handled by Bakker, there were people who used drugs just so they could stay up longer and play longer. These people would only stop playing when their bodies - and not their computers - crash. Those who've spent most of their days in front of their computers also lose their social network and have problems communicating with people face-to-face.

Bakker is hoping that most parents and the gamers themselves see that though gaming may seem like an innocent activity, it can still cause addiction. This detox clinic in Netherlands will start its program this July.

This is stupid. Who would pay to get away from games. Video games keep you away from socializing w/ people fACE-TO-FACE? Ha! Whoever opened this clinic is just out of their mind. How would it be done? I'd like to see.

 » Okay

Okay so now your going to take away my games. Let's see I work 10hr shefts 7 days on 7 days off. I pay my taxes a good person. Let's say you then I would have to turn to killin' who or what came up with this idea for gamers. First off we game to forget about problems, hang with my friends, oh and let's not forget you could getr shot these days for being outside. So some a$$hole feels I play to much. I bet the people(s) that came up with this idea never played a game. Last time I check it's "We The People For The People By The People". Just another way for some rich A-hole to make money or to get the Gov. to give them money. This use to be USA now I'm wondering if it's USSR. I know the story is not in the USA but give it time, Like everthing else. Hell maybe we need a Revolution... And then the Gov. wants to know why the people hate then. That's just my two cents.

IM JUST A GAME ADDICT!

   by Slipstream0 (Unregistered) - 2006-06-08
 » wow...

im suprised everyone here is so emidiatly against the thought that people can get addicted to games. My Unlce got hooked on Everquest so much that he lost his job because he kept falling asleep and almost ruined his mairage before his family forced him to stop. My Cousin would throw mad fits (at age 17) over not being able to play an online game called "Tibia", so much that his family had to get rid of every computer they owned, and even have the school keep him off the computers because he would download it and play it in the library and just skip all of his classes.

So yes, its rare, its partial insanity, but it DOES exist, just not enough to warrent a detox.

Aimed at funny person No 23
People find this stupid because stupid people need something to blame for the crap way they live there lives!! "Oooh its video games causing violence in children!!! we had video nasties in the 80's and now "ooh i cant stop having sex, i cant stop shopping "i cant stop playing video games"
People and governments don't wish to delve any deaper and nearly always skim the surface of the real issues! With this kinda BULLS**T. BLAME SOCIETY "It's not my fault it's theres"
People rarely ask themselves maybe the problem is with them rather than dealing with deaper issues they blame the easy target
