Sony to stay by UMD's side - Image 1Quite frankly, the PSP's Universal Media Disc format is one big contradiction staring at all of us. For several times already, various sectors of the video game industry told Sony to abandon the format because of several limitations like its size.

Sony, however, has remained adamant all these years. This stand was recently echoed by PlayStation Portable Senior Marketing Manager John Koller as he reiterated the different strengths of the format. He mentioned,

UMD possesses many strengths, from size to form factor to portability. Duplication of UMDs is much easier, cheaper than cartridges. We've really optimized time and cost by going with a disc-based format. UMD is a unique medium to create games and developers need to understand that when tackling the system.

It seems that Koller really believes his own statements because he wasn't afraid to point out the weaknesses of the UMD as well - implying that Sony is not just being stubborn about it. He added, "There's no question the biggest weakness is related to porting games from other platforms. Publishers are concerned about the size of UMD because they can't cram a DVD game on to it".

Given all these, the marketing manager explained that Sony really believes in the format and is not going to drop it. Koller shared, "We'll never walk away from our base. Whether it's movies or game content, third parties have an incredible opportunity to utilize it. The future of UMD is bright".

ya they only like it becaus it possesses the inability to be written and burned on a computer (yet) but only a matter of time till somebody figures out how to burn those discs, then sony will suddenly decide to change their current format

» Wow, way to go Sony

Everyone who knows about software is wise enough to know how crappy the UMD format is. But that wasn't why I posted "wow, way to go sony", it's because if the game publishers and developers say it's crap then how can you come a defend yourself and talk positive about it when you don't publish or create the games! Now wonder Sony is having troubles and is starting to cut jobs, they're losing all third party support!

» theres never gonna be a umd burner

you idiot sony is the only one who makes umds in fact sony owns the rights to "umd" (its right along the spine of the umd, if you actually owned one you would know) meaning there will not be any umd burner/blank umds because that would only increase the rate of piracy which is obviously what you intend to do furthermore that is exactly the opposite of what sony intends which is why theyre so pissed off about the 3.50 downgrader

   Re: rob (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » some serious denial here...

UMD is not the best format in the world, but, it is by no-means the worst, and allows for a great deal of work to be done. Games like DM prove that size+/+Quality, and um guesing the main complaint is coming from EA, whole likes to jam pack there games with $hit and sell millions to the casual public

"We've really optimized time and cost by going with a disc-based format." COST? Thats BS. $50 for half of a dvd game. The games should be like $20-$35 brand new. They should know why sites like this are up.

 » @ gregerson316

Cost of producing them, idiot. The production price has a very small impact on the retail price in this situation. Retail price is decided by publishers.

Sony sounds a lot like Nintendo did when they stuck with cartridges for so long. What happened to the Sony that used to be innovative and cared about what the devolpers wanted? It seems Sony was much easier to deal with when they were hungry for market share.

 » Wouldn't be a problem

If they increased the capacity, though a lot of PSP games don't even take up that much space, but some of the awesome ones take up all the space, I don't really know if that's a problem for developers though.

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-07-05
 » ...

yeah i've also noticed developers dont utilize the full UMD data storage, its a shame. that could be why we get so many people saying "psp sucks" or "this game sucks id rather play my DS" although i dont have one, its for the classics where psp is not.

well at least a 1.8gb UMD is better than a 128mb NDS card. (1 GigiBit equals 123mb)

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-07-05
 » d

i meant 128mb

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2007-07-05
 » and

Just to clarify

1 byte(B) + 8 bits(b).

It's a 1.8 GB UMD, and a 1 Gb (128 MB) NDS Card

Re: skus monkey (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
» OK for all the non computer illiterate people

8 bits + 1 byte,
1024 bytes + 1 kilobyte,
1024 kb + 1 megabyte,
1024 mb + 1gigabyte, so as you said above 128mb in a gb your completely WRONG!!

   Re: SW (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » @Skus monkey

No, you are wrong, Skus monkey, and Mr Toasty is right...

1 Gb (Giga Bit) + 1024 Mb (Mega Bits) + 1024 / 8 MB (Mega Bytes) + 128MB (Mega Bytes)

And the "equals" and "plus" signs are 2 different things, but it could very well be a problem with QJ so I don't blame you. I have problems with QJ too, my posts usually lose their formatting, and the "quotes" are escaped (antislash before them).

   Re: purplepills (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » at skus monkey

you could also say

1000 bytes + 1 kilobyte,
1000 kb + 1 megabyte,
1000 mb + 1gigabyte

and also he said gigabit not gigabyte

They complain about disc space? Wow they will complain about anything, Legend of Heroes Sora no Kiseki second chapter is the only 2 disc game I know of. certainly 2 discs aren't that bad compared to the PSONE. If these guys forgot there are 5 disc PSONE games out there.

Trueness at its best.

I donīt give a ***** if they bring out 2 or 3disc games. Actually I would like to play games which are so complex that they use so much disc space and have *****loads of goodies.

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-07-05
 » Chris you're dumb...

Difference is that while CDs were very cheap UMDs are expensive. In addition, CDs are big but thin, I don't think putting 5 UMDs on a case is good, what kind of case would they need?
   by senjutsu (Unregistered) - 2007-07-05
» they should use their memory stick instead

memory sticks are faster than UMD, and not only faster, but WAY faster, and they use almost no energy compared to the UMDs... But they cost WAY MORE.

So I think they should make the games on memory stick, anyway right now the memory sticks cost way less than before(4g for about 50$, and 1gig for about 15-25$, so maybe 1-5$ to make for sony). Also, you can upgrade the space for a game really easilly, you just use a memory stick with more space on it... instead of making a new console, or worse, making a less great game...

   Re: Stealth (Unregistered) - 2007-07-05
 » lol

they alreayd thought of that, which is why they went with UMD. There are lots of benefits with UMD then not.
