ps3Sony has just announced that they will spend US$ 30 million to promote the PS3 in North America alone! The big bucks will go to the 15,000 demo booths for the PS3 that will be strategically placed in the U.S. and Canadian stores during the Holiday season. In case you've been keeping track, Sony's PS2 launched with a more modest 3,000 store kiosks.

While analysts still say that gamers will balk at the PS3's hefty price, Jack Tretton, co- chief operating officer at Sony Computer Entertainment America, thinks otherwise. "Once the consumers get their hands on a PS3 and understand what's under the hood, I think price will not be a factor in the decision-making process,'' says Tretton.

The aggressive and expensive marketing move is Sony's way of keeping Christmas shoppers away from one of its rivals, the Xbox 360, as well as its other competitor, the Nintendo Wii.

Sony... all the fanboy's and ebayer's will buy out the stock and you'll just have a bunch of dispointed/uninformed Christmas shoppers looking at the demo and compairing to the xbox360 or wii and saying don't looking that diffent and "timmy" does need something under the tree.

» Price is a factor for descision!

at least for the ppl that have to work for their money!

When the price drops to ~300€ and there is a real linux on it where i can use emulators and other homebrew, then it may be worth the 300€.
But when it is the same way Sony "protects" the PSP... goodbye

 » 15,000 WOW

That sounds great, but in reality that is 15,000 less for consumer purchase. Oh well, with all the people saying it is to expensive I doubt that it will sell out anyway, right? (sarcasm)

» #3 has nailed it right on the head.

When it comes down to it sony is going to lose alot of supports this year. Most parents aren't going to go that crazy to buy a ps3 for their kids when ebay finest are reselling the ps3 for $1,000 - $1,200, when they could buy a xbox 360 for $300 - $400. What makes it even worst is now Sony only has 385,000 unit coming to the US.

"Once the consumers get their hands on a PS3" What a f#cking joke, most aren't going get there hands on one.

I got to say Sony and MS really both f#cked up their launches, the only difference is it sony turns now.

 » You guys are stupid

Do you really think sony is going to send 15k out of it's 400k of units to the US solely for demos? Think people, they are going to make more just to fill the 15k order which isn't that much of a deal for them. Also the PS3 will sell good because if "Jimmiy" tells his mom he wants a PS3 and he gets a 360 instead, Jimmy's gonna cry all day and never play it. A parent would rather spend more money on something their kids will use then less money on something they won't use or like.

Oh really Tony? Then my parents are *****astic. When I wanted the 360, they told me straight up, "1 grand? ***** that, here's an iPod"

I eventually got the 360, I love it. I want the PS3, but again, now I"m in the same *****ing boat. If your parents want to spend ridiculous amounts to make you happy, tell them you'll be even happier when your friend Age gets one too. Share the *****ing wealth pal.

 » Moneys not the problem

It's paying over the retail price which is a problem! I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to pay over retail for a ps3.
