Sony: Digital releases as standard could be five years away - Image 1

Sony may finally be warming up to publishing PSP titles as PSN downloads, simultaneous releases with its UMD counterpart is still a long ways away - for North America at least. Japan and Europe's a different story. Sony's John Koller explains that

In North America we haven't made a firm decision if and when we're going to launch day and date, retail and digital. In Japan we do, and Europe's going that way. In America we're looking at the opportunity.

Digital kind of fits our view of the world in the mid-term, not in the short term – three to five years out. We want to start providing the content to the consumers and start to get them to a place where they can accept digital distribution.

I'm just wondering if the PSP will still be around that long. Koller also explains that a purely digital distribution model won't happen anytime soon. Not sure why gamers would want to eliminate UMD distribution if they already have digital though.

Music hung on to the disc format for as long as possible, when consumers were actively saying 'we're very interested in digital. We're very happy to provide that content and at least allow the consumer to make that choice. We want to provide the option to wake up in the morning and get it on-line or walk to the store and buy it.

We're looking at various models to see when to launch those. That's not to say retail is going away, because it's not. It's a balance, it's a very fine balance because retail does so much for us that digital maybe can't. So different models are floating around and we haven't made a firm decision on that.

I like digital because it's convenient and faster load times, but I also like physical copy for piece of mind. To me it doesn't matter.

Yeah some people like a physical copy like I do. But digitally piracy will drop dramatically and we might be able to get bigger and better games because there's no limit to the size of the game unlike the UMD which can only hold like 1.5GB.

This way Sony can really promote their PSN cards and Pro Duo memory stick which have dropped in price.

 » I agree totally.

I mean digital is great and all, but I prefer to have that for titles like the classics. But like the PS3 and games like Burnout Paradise making it's way digital, I can see where that could be a route that could help them. But people must be crazy to want only digital. Not many places can get fast download rates. I know a friend who is still stuck on dial up, which this move would be a complete nightmare if they went fully digital.
There's something about physical copies imo that totally own digital. And I prefer physical copies all the way. But having options or choices, like this article states, is not a bad idea.

I think it has to do with how almost everyone in Europe has access to broadband and have it. And that in Japan everyone basically has some crazy 1 gigabit connection.
Reason America doesn't seem viable is I remember reading somewhere a ridiculous amount of people don't have internet or are still using dial up.

If the PSP went completely digital I wouldn't buy the games because messing with DRM is a total pain in the ass.

» PSP games on the PSP is a great idea.

More than 1.8 gigs and faster loading without that annoying laser noise.

I hate reading about "digital distribution" .. I don't want it .. I'm sure I'd adapt but I wouldn't be too happy. I want a physical copy of the game to hold in my hand. Unless you can put it like .. on a memory stick or something, but that'd take forever .. I like taking my games to my friend's house to play. Unless the system plans on being the size of a Gameboy I just won't be happy =/

But HEY, if they do it well and completely tear my comment apart, I won't complain

 » ISP traffic limitations

What about those who have DL limits of 20GB or even less per month. Yes digital DLs sounds great but when users see the cost and the surcharges for overages of traffic who knows how well that will be received.

Well that's good at least they will still make UMD versions of the games for people that have poor ISP service and connection.

 » price??

I dont mind the digital way of thinking, but if that is the future then sony and every1 with them make the memory stick pro duo dirt cheap. Like starting the 16 gig version at like 15$ then work from there. W/o umd sony is saving money so put that extra $$ towards cheaper MS

 » overpriced

By common sense, digital versions should be cheaper, as there's no resale value at all, and no material costs (for disc, manual and the case) and distribution costs are way smaller than with physical discs.

Is this happening?

No, it's the opposite. Take Resistance Retribution for example. I preordered the special edition for 23.50 euros. There's also digital download version available, however, this costs a whopping 40 euros (if I recall correctly), so I'd be paying over 15 euros extra for what? Losing resale value, losing all extras the special edition has, printed manual, covers, the disc I can easily borrow or sell...

On the other hand, I'd gain the ability to play the game without UMD (and only without UMD), of course with custom firmware I can easily install any disc game on my memory stick.

 » Exactly

Especially if they are going to play the old, "You only get 3 downloads period" game. Speaking of which, I hate EA.

 » I prefer physical

So UMD for me. For no other reason besides what others have already said, physical disc and materials leave less risk of loss, and allows me to let others borrow and try the game. Ive never liked downloaded stuff, for the risk of loss and limit on number of times software would be downloadable. I only buy digital when there is no other option due to out of print or PSN exclusive.
