PlayStation 3 not getting price drop - Image 1

It was a deja vu moment when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. head honcho Kazuo Hirai recently remarked in an interview that there are currently no plans for a price cut for the PlayStation 3. None at all. The comment effectively squashes all talks, rumors, and hopes.

The announcement applies to all regions (yes, even Japan). Talks about a price drop may have been sparked by the lowered production cost of the PlayStation 3. It could also have been sparked by the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PS3), a notion that's been suggested before.

Analyst Michael Pachter also predicted that the console will double its U.S. sales, but only if a price cut should happen. Perhaps a price cut may happen yet - the year has only started after all. We can only wait and see what happens. Check back for updates.

...So that means we see a price cut for the PS3....
Everything they deny will be approved a few days or weeks later...
the best example is the PSP Slim & Lite....

Hey QJ time to start finding some deals at circuit city and best buy lol.

The PSP doesn't really need a price cut.
It's already at a really good price.

$499 (around £250) will get you an 80GB model in the US. (40GB - $399)

Whereas a 60GB model in the UK is around the £300-320 mark, I haven't really checked to be honest.

I picked up my 80GB while I was on holiday in the US last month.. Really good deal, I think.

In the past, I've paid £300 for Xbox, £200 for Dreamcast, £200 for PSP, £150 for PS1, £150 for Megadrive (Genesis).

So really, £250 isn't an overly large amount to be paying for something as brilliant as a PS3.
Remembering it also doubles as a Blu-ray/DVD/CD/ player.. As well as the countless other features it possesses.

SOOOOOO
thinking about it..
the PS3 could replace your PS2, your DVD player, AND your PC.. (web browser, picture viewer, music player, video player, the option of installing an open source operating system..)

$499 is NOT a good price. not everyone can afford that. Good luck Sony.

 » lol?

Not everyone can afford $499?

How much is the Wii?
And how many games does a Wii user purchase over the next 6 months after purchasing the console?

How much are Wii games?

Say the answers are..

$249
6
$49

249+(6*49)=543

so in six months, you've spent $543 on a Wii and a few games.

What's preventing people from spending an extra 5 months' spare cash on a premium piece of technology, as opposed to a quickbitofchildishfun?

Impatience?
Tightness with money?

It seems Wii players are overly fond of their console though, so fair play to them.

Kids games don't often do it for me though.

 » Wiiiiiiiiii

I own a Nintendo Wii and a Sony PS3 and I have got to say that I use my PS3 more often than I do my Wii. Only because I play a lot of single player games even though some of which I do play online. I play the Wii occasionally, mainly when my friends come over. Last time we played Mario and Sonic Olympics and we had a blast. Beyond that I play Warhawk, UT3, Assassins Creed, and WWE 2008 on my PS3.

I am only stating my opinion, I am in no way dissing either system.

 » Wii is the best

Companion system that is. Everyone I know who owns a Wii enjoys it for its party games and playing with friends but they also have either a PS3 or 360 as their main console for the beef of their gaming.

Thats why Wii will be a fad.

Not to mention, I know just casual gamers who bought into the Wii excitement and now have the machines do nothing more than collect dust.

Back to the topic. A price cut of $100 per SKU would be the best thing in the world for Sony to do. However, at $399 for a system that plays all the PS3 games you want it's not hugely expensive. While being able to play PS2 games is hella f'n kewl (something I love about my 60gb) with gamers jumping into these new consoles, you don't necessarily need it. With Wiis getting gamecube (lmao, cuz the cube had a huge list of must play titles) and roms that nintendo dictate you pay for (all of which sit on most of our PC harddrives thanks to the wonder that is the internet) and the 360's joke of backwards compatibility - it doesn't seem like gamers are buying new consoles to play old games.

 » Why a price cut?

The PS3 is still the cheapest blu ray player and does so much more. The Wii costs the same price on ebay and is only good for minigames and gamecube games.

The price is fine, they should have launched it at $500 then faked a shortage like Nintendo is and it would be selling great!

 » Demand

I took an economics class in High School and the one thing that I remember so vividly is Supply and Demand. Nintendo probably puts 5-10% of each months production into a warehouse to be stored for the holiday season. The rest is shipped out to the public. Nintendo does not have the same number of manufacturers as say Microsoft or Sony. I believe that they have of a small few compared to their competition, at least I read it in a article some where online. Its possible that you can google it, some thing like "Nintendo Manufactures."

I believe they are trying to meet demand but are unable to because the demand is so high. Its like everyone in your neighborhood trying to visit a small restaurant at the same time. You have to wait patiently to get in, and then longer for your food.

» sony won't cut the price now

I guess they'll cut it around the end of the year, not before. I mean, they cut, cut, cut and cut non stop. Last year it was 599$ and I bought mine 499$ , 80g with motorstorm, Lair, and a remote control. And now it's 399$ with spiderman 3! I mean, the x360 is priced around the same, how could they cut another time?

Still, if they cut another time, they'll loose a lot of money, but gain a lot of installed base, so they'll win money by loosing money... :S lol.

idc really but a $50 price cut could help sony alot. Look at what the deal would be.
360 + 349.99 20gb no wifi($80) $50 for online great gaming library though but only around 2 solid titles for 08 no hd drive although that more of a luxury for now(until games require more space)

PS3 + 349.99 FREE online 40 gb decent gaming library with a great future(08) wifi bluetooth bluray and possibly home if everything works like its meant to.
A price cut of $50 would change a ton of peoples perspectives and sales would boom especially with MGS4 right around the corner.

cutting $50 isn't as easy as you make it out to be. say they sold 1 Million PS3s for $350. They would be losing $50,000,000. they would have to sell 833,333 games just to cover that, let alone the production cost of the game(s).

That's all fine and dandy, but people with a lot of bills can't just pull 500 bucks out of their ass to plunk down on a system. Sure, I'm a diehard Sony fan, but that price is ridiculous from my viewpoint (and im not settling for the 40gb, since it has no PS2 BC, and I have tons of PS2 games)... The only people who say its reasonable are people who already have one, because they dont have to worry about buying one again, or just spoiled brats who can buy whatever they want.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-01-23
» I think people who say its reasonable

Are people who know exactly what there getting for what they paid. If a blu-ray play costs more than a PS3 go figure why we thing its reasonable, it comes with way more. If you look at other stuff like an full HDTV (1080p) it costs around 1,300. That device is only to look at stuff in HD yet it costs that much. Get a 60 gb then, im pretty sure theres still some around.

One thing that I think makes it reasonable is because I bought mine when the 60gb was $599. If you think about how now the 80 gb costs that much (I would have a 80 gb for the same price as my 60). PLUS the 60 gbwent down in price AND they released the 40 gb lol.

» We all know that Kaz is lying.

He always denies everything like the PSP SLIM and PS3 40 gig and he lies about everything related to Playstation, only reason he does it, is to trick people into thinking that there will be no price cut and BAM PRICE CUT!

I mean first he said 40 gig PS3 would not come out and then it did come out and he really contradicts himself, first he says no, then he says yes.

He just lies about everything, there will probably be a price cut for the PS3, since this always happens, when he says NO.
