Sony objects! - Image 1

Hackers have finally found their way through the PS3's front defenses - firmware versions 1.10 and 1.11 can now be allowed to boot game copies, but they won't play just yet. Homebrews are currently out of the scene too, which basically means tinkering with your unit right now will only break warranty.

However, Sony was quick on the trigger, immediately giving their word after the news broke out. Spokesperson Dave Karakker told Games Industry:

Unfortunately, hackers will try to exploit any hardware system software. The best we can do as a company is to make our security that much stronger and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner.

Props to Sony for making a lot of their faithful followers happy, since a lot of PS3 owners expressed their concerns regarding the matter. This statement should give fans a little peace of mind. We don't see hackers giving up in the near future though; these modern Robin Hoods would stop at nothing to make free games available.

Who wrote this: "Props to Sony for making a lot of their faithful followers happy, since a lot of PS3 owners expressed their concerns regarding the matter."?

PS3 owners should be rejoicing the fact that they can expand their PS3 game libraries and the console's capabilities (ie. homebrew)

you're an idiot. the psp's homebrew has come a long way, and doesn't have $hit to show for it. the VNC computer controller is the coolest one, and that was one of the first homebrew programs available! sure, you can stream internet radio...but that's really it. who wants to play crappy versions of renamed tetris?

dude this site is all about opinions...i used homebrew on the psp for a long time (until recently when I wanted to actually have more features...like accessing my ps3 from anywhere in the world.) homebrew will NEVER be able to do that, I guarentee it. in my entire time using it, it's too much trouble for really no gain. just a bunch of kids who think they're special bc their psp is 'hacked.' (been there, done that.) And don't even get me started on piracy.

"Say something on the PSP or leave..." Way to read the article their dipsh1t. It's about the PS3 not the PSP... I love how you don't even read about your precious console you just feel the need to bash someone against it by only reading other Sony Fanboy comments and then attacking. If your gonna post in defense of something... try knowing what you are defending LOLZ have a nice day!

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

This blows. I want homebrew and linux!!!!

Sony doesn't want linux to run on it's machine for two reasons:

1. If the PS3 where to become anything other then a PS3 then their accessory sales per unit will plummet. ie, if you could use the PS3 as a full blown linux server!!!

2. Linux would mean a DECENT web browser. OMG!!!!!

   Re: SICKBOY1138 (Unregistered) - 2007-06-12
 » WTF?!?!?

HEY THERE WTF....wtf? you can pt linux on it now. they made it so you can. its in the xmb. do you own a ps3. because if you did, youd know this. buisisnesses are using them as linux servers. but why would most any gamer want to use it as a server? tey just dont waqnt pirates to use homebrew to load games that you should pay for. i play backups on my psp.but of the ones i own. i just dont feel like carryin a bunch of UMD's. as the lifecycle moves on...the ps3's security and ability to keepout hackers will be the only thing to attract developers to make exclusives.
i think eventually it will gat cracked the way the psp is. but fitting a blue ray game on dvd isnt going to happen, so it should e safe from the masses in a way the psp isnt.

   Re: damonous - 2007-06-12
» PS3 is DESIGNED to run Linux

Ok, for anyone who doesn't read SICKBOY1138's post, and is reading WTF!?!?!?'s post, I just wanted to make sure it was clear in the bold title. This is one of the more ridiculous posts I've seen here in a while. The PS3 has an "Install Other OS" option in the regular System Settings user menu. Yellow Dog Linux can be downloaded for free from the Internet and installed on any PS3. --There, WTF!?!?!?!?!?!? ---go grab your Linux now and install it on your PS3 (if you have one) and put a sock in it. By the way, too, as of (I think it was) PS3 firmware 1.40, the regular web browser isn't too shabby for a game system browser. Full zooming features; decent support for Flash. In regards to homebrew, I think the post from Creighton further up above also hit it spot-on. I played with homebrew for a few months on PSP, but it's really not worth it --not when Sony actually keeps releasing cool new firmware features (and I count both PSP and PS3 here).

   Re: WTF!?!?!?!?! (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Wow! Both SICKBOY1138 and damonous have to be the biggest morons on the planet!!!!

1. I never said the PS3 could NOT run linux. Gees, you're both stupid.

2. The most recent firmware upgrades CHANGE how the OtherOS opperates and it's clear Sony is moving in a different direction. WHY YOU ASK? Because they felt it was only a matter of time that the RSX resources were leaked.

Sony made SURE you could NOT fully access the WHOLE UNIT from OtherOS. That makes Linux pretty dang worthless other then for simple services and super basic apps. In other words, until we can access RSX you can kiss most emulators goodbye.

Maybe you two should think REAL HARD before you pound BS on your keyboard.

Now that the RSX info has been leaked you better believe Sony is going to further lock down the OtherOS feature.

They want to MAKE SURE the PS3 is only fully usuable by PS games.

Re: Im smarter than you (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » your an idiot

to wtf?!?!,

No YOUR the stupid one. Sony has guides to installing linux. They dont mind if you do or else they wouldnt release official documents on how to install it. See this jackasss?

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html

Theres your proof. The ps3 IS a linux based system. Your right about not being able to access the GPU but this doesnt mean sony doesnt want you installing an OS on it. Why would they give you the option in plain site of the system menu....

If you actually have a ps3, you should sell it to someone with a brain and buy a crapbox 360 cuz you are a discrace...

   Re: WTF!?!?!?!?! (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

"They dont mind if you do or else they wouldnt release official documents on how to install it."

Wow, these idiots just keep popping out of the wood work around here. Maybe my advanced thinking is just too much for you? Instead of discussing linux IN GENERAL I guess I need to dummy down to your level and make sure to discuss all the varying software in question. Since you are too stupid to understand then maybe I should rephrase my statement into something your simpleton mind can understand?

"While $ony doesn't mind you actually installing linux, they do THERE BEST to make sure you can't run any worth while linux software".

Is that more your level?

"See this jackasss?"
Wow, you sure are smart!

"Your right about not being able to access the GPU"
DUH!

"but this doesnt mean sony doesnt want you installing an OS on it. Why would they give you the option in plain site of the system menu...."
Oh gee!!!!!!! Thanks SONY!!!!!!!!!!!! You let us install an OS but then you don't allow us to do anything useful, graphics wise. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Can you honestly read what you just wrote and NOT feel utterly stupid for having written it?

They allow you to do something yet completely lock it down......yeah....that's the same as not really letting you to begin with. Get it yet?

So, going back to my original comment.

I want homebrew and "LINUX"!!!!

ALL OF LINUX you MORONS!!!!!! Not what little teeny tinny piece of linux $ony will allow us to run.

Get a clue FREAKS!!!!!!!

Hilarious!

 » WTF is right

WTF is right. The rest of you idiots are wrong.

Linux is basicly worthless when it comes to gaming on the PS3 because it's locked down. Sony will continue to keep it that way.

Booooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want homebrew and "full" linux support as well!!!!!!

 » hmmmmm

i agree i really dont want this to turn into the psp scene with sony so crazy paranoid that the system suffers because of it i really just wish they would look at it difrently the ps2 was hacked most of its "life cycle" and sales obviously wernt damaged at all lets take all the $$$ and people were waisting on a unwinnable battle with hackers and make some FING GAMES im starting to sound like an xbot

   Re: Creighton (Unregistered) - 2007-06-12
 » ...

Sony really hasn't been that worried about security issues. Every firmware update in both the PSP and PS3 SHOULD have security enhancements...that's what good programmers do with their software; tighten it. Furthermore, all the OE-A and OE-B 'custom' firmwares IN A ROW are proof that Sony's #1 to-do is not to lock homebrew out. But yes, they got around to it a few firmwares up. (And I'm glad I can access my PS3 from anywhere in the freaking world now!)

 » QJ

I dont knwo what QJ is sounding so happy and contempt about. Sony stated;

''and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner.''

Now if im not wrong I am sure they will try and take legal action against site promoting the firmware hacks and what not. So QJ I would be prepared, you may say your just giving the news, I say your promoting piracy.

they say how they will try and stop hackers and homebrew yet thats the only thing keeping QJ going everything else is hype and RUMORS!! JUNE 11th WHERES MY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-13
 » Ohh I'm scared of sony's lawyers

Come on hackers, don't beleive $ony's scare tactics. Hack their security like with the PSP. You can do it! There's nothing illegal, there have been hacks, backups, modchips, and sony has done nothing with past systems. I'll get those backups mass produced in a factory in China! We'll make millions!

   Re: andrewsqual - 2007-06-13
 » Yeah whatever freak

The 360s security was so lack luster that it was hacked 3 weeks after release. Wot good is it hackin the 1.10 and 1.11 firmware? The hackers have a long way to go and they are firmwares behind Mr Common Dense.

   by god0fgod (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » Hmmmm

I don't like the thought of pirated games. Sony should realese an official SDK in which people can create games that run differently to normal ps3 games. It could have limitations. It could be like the difference with PBP and LUA games on the ps3.

 » Suggestion for success...

Sony, why is the PS2 so successful even after its newest sibling (aka PS3) has already come out in stores? Because the PS2 focused on MAKING GREAT GAMES rather than focusing too much on being a media system of sorts (ie When the PS3 was called more of a computer than a videogame system). The PS2 was given an extreme amount of attention in the form of receiving a massive library of games that would allow something for everyone. Though I love having an XMB like the PSP, allowing me to save my media to the PS3's HDD, Sony should now start shooting for more games (preferably exclusives) rather than focusing so much on the computer aspect of the PS3. Sony, POWER TO THE PEOPLE (in the form of the ability to choose from a humongous library of games). Thank you.

 » Same Old, Same Old

They always do this, They'll b*tch and moan about people hacking the firmware, they'll release a security update in the next firmware. And if you wait a while then It'll be cracked.

They key is to stay as low as possible and wait for the hackers to come out with the big guns on your firmware.
