MSX-M8GS - Sony's 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo - Image 1Sony "memsticks" get a whole new upgrade as they double the (old?) 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo to a whopping 8GB of memory. For a piece of silicon that small, to say it was packin' a lot would nominate you for the Understatement of the Year award. Sony Japan dubs this as the "MSX-M8GS," and it's only available to modern Sony products.

What about PSP users? Well, as long as you've got firmware version 2.81 (and above) up and running, you will be able to enjoy 8GB of freedom. Well, actually you get 7.35GB of freedom, after some file allocation and formatting.

Expect the access performance to hit a minimum low of 15MBps. Sony says that Cybershot digital cameras and Vaio laptops won't be able to handle this puppy unless they were released in 2007.

New launches reports that the 8GB package will be sold in Japan starting March 9, 2007 for ¥ 38,000 or (get ready for it) US$ 325.63. 326 smackeroos! Hells bells!

This is old news.

First of all pspupdates.qj.net is all about linking to the official post so it can never be as fast as that post. Secondly everyone knew that Sony would produce the 8 gig and next the 16 gig but the announcement of the new mem card wasnt official until recently.

   Re: PimpMaster (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03
 » yeah

He's right, the announcement was unofficial until now. $326 is friggin ridiculous, though. I have 7GB's of memory space (3 cards) and I only spent $100 for all of them. I wonder how long till counterfeit's are up on ebay.

   Re: ebayer (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03
 » memstick

the counterfeits are already being sold! Only about $100 bucks too! I have heard some counterfeits really are worth the price. But others are really 1 gb labeled as 8. So do your homework first.

Actually, they probably get you by saying that it is 8 gigabit (or just gb and then they can say it is gigabit when you question the size), which is equivalent to 1 gigabyte

The 4gb is $310 australian over here ins sydney stores. I got myself a legit sony 4gb for $100. 4gb is more than enough. When I plug my 128mb card in and connect my psp to my laptop it recognoses it straight away. But when connecting the 4gb it takes ahwile. Like mentioned aboue it will have slow access. 4gb is perfect

I want one of these so bad, but I'll be contempt to wait until they fall to at least $200.00 or I can always buy a Fake on Ebay because they just have slightly lower read-write times but the same memory.

buy fakes off ebay. I got a 2gig for 8 bucks. It lasted a while but evevntually broke. So then i stepped up to the plate and bought a high speed 2gig for 12 bucks. the 12 dollar stick is still working. i play my isos (backups). It is much easier to carry 1 stick with you than 10 umds.

   Re: Ultimax (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03

Your attitude would be completely different if it happened while you were downgrading...

   Re: KiGui (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03
 » U want fake ****?

If you buy a stick off eBay, you're just asking to get ripped off! Be prepared when in two months the thing doesn't work anymore! Lower R/W times are just the beginning. Not only that, but there will be no warrantee -- and good luck if you want a refund! Sure, go ahead and buy fakes, but do not go around crying when you have to keep replacing them along with the data you will inevidably lose! Buying fakes will cost you more in the end, and frankly -- is a really DUMB move.

Well boy's and girls, I'm afrade I'm going to sit this one out
and wait for the 32GB Sony/SanDisk Memory Stick Pro-HG in
08-09. With a Double Expand Memory Converter for a total
of 64GB.

In a year, you'll be able to pick up this 7.35GB stick for
$69.99 on eBay, why spend 5x that now?

I'm holding out for the BiGun's, ho and in case one of you
noobs trys to start flaming about 32GB not being
supported, support will arrive for the 32GB just like it did
with the 8GB stick by way of firmware update or possibly
hardware update/newer version/model number, so just
keep your pie hole shut. This is a good thing.

I've had serious doubts as to this before. Because all the OE firmwares use the 1.5 kernal for homebrew... wouldn't that mean that they don't support 8 gbs? Two 4 gbs really is a better deal in my book.

   by Kichigai - 2007-03-03
 » Oi! NOT FORMATTING!

You're not losing 650 MB due to formatting! It's because when people market devices, they put on the box a metric measurement of space. In this case, 8 GB as 8 billion bytes (8,000,000,000 bytes). However, when you measure space as it's done in software, according to (I think) the IEEE, in divisions of 1024 bytes. So, (((8,000,000,000/1024)/1024)/1024)=7.35. This is sometimes referred to as "Gibibytes," with subdivisions of "Mibibytes" and "Kibibytes." While you do lose some storage to partitioning, but not THAT much. It's division error and mislabeling. PLEASE, QJ, in an attempt to maintain some level of intelligence and credibility, stop spreading that LIE.

Re: Mr. Truth (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03
 » You are right sir.

For example, you highlight some file on windows and it tells you its size i.e. 7.35GB. But when you go to properties it says something like 8,000,000,000

1 gb + 1073741824 (8gb + 8,589,934,592 bytes)

   Re: KiGui (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03

This marketing ploy has been around for a long time! In 2000, KiB, GiB, etc, had become adopted by some in order to alleviate the confusion between metric (1,000) and binary (1,024) values. We can all thank SeaGate for this disaster. Kichigai is 100% correct. Good work!
