PSP - Image 1

March 13, 2007 - After all the rumors and speculation, a Sony exec has finally gone on record to say that a redesigned version of Sony's PSP handheld is in the works.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists at the national launch of Sony's PSP in Education initiative that the current PSP is just the "first iteration", and that a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.

Maguire also said that any redesigns would not affect the PSP's screen, which is apparently "fixed." Judging by Sony's track record of cutting the size and cost of their redesigned consoles since the PSOne was first introduced, a redesigned PSP could also presumably carry a lower price tag.

Following Maguire's statement, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that apart from firmware updates, no "immediate changes" are currently planned for the PSP. "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development," said the spokesperson, "and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

UPDATE (May 15, 2007): We were informed by QJ reader whoelse about a report at PSPGen regarding the "lighter and smaller PSP" allegedly in the works. Apparently, French magazine - The Official Guide of the PSP, has picked up this piece of info causing a bit of resurgence in this rumor.

As of now, there's still no new and official information about the "PSP Light" from the Sony camp. As always we will keep you posted about this matter, but for now, feel free to check out the PSPGen report complete with magazine scans and have your trusty Babelfish and Google Translate ready if you don't understand French.

 » Oooo Bloopq ! Fanatic !

Well SCEE CEO just called. He said they r planning to redesign the PSP as light n small as yr dad's worthless black d*ck.

Oopss almost forgot...the new PSP can't play game on bed coz it'll have a small d*ck like battery as weak as u n yr dad's black d*ck n gonna be torturing for yr mom.

   Re: God (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
» Of course it will be compatible with UMD's

What kind of a dumb question is that?

Of course this PSP redesign will have a UMD drive, it's a PSP redesign, not a PSP2.

And of course Sony will continue to attempt to make it homebrew-proof (which will eventually be cracked).

   Re: axelixc - 2007-03-13
 » It's not dump doG

it's not a question. It's a hope. Sony has yet to confirm any umd hardware means what u r saying just baseless rumors for the moment.

So there is no proof that current umds will be 100% compatible. Take a look at PS3 since Sony had it backward compatibility but what turned out was PS3 has backward compatibility problem.

   Re: Hyperbolic (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » WTF

So you're saying that they'll make an update to an older console, which is now the PSP, and not make it play all UMD's? When they released the PS1 redesign did they restrict any PS1 games? When they released the PS2 redesign did they restrict any PS2 games? Both Playstation redesigns also came with the same CD/DVD drives. Even the DS Lite came with the same flashcart reader. Listen to what you're saying, you sound like an idiot.

 » well

personally, i don't know how sony could redesign the psp to be thinner without it feeling too flimsy. the current psp is good enough for me. no, unless sony releases a psp2 in the future, i would go for that. a redesign is for those of you who a) don't have a psp yet or b) can't handle yourself and must have the latest thing. the only reason i would get a redesign is if it had a second analog nub, and it probably won't

ofcourse homebrew is legal its just isos that are illegal thats why sony is afraid of homebrew they just dont want people puting iso loaders in the form of eboots personaly i think sony should hire some lonly middleaged man to sit at his desk and give Homebrew the Sony Seal of Approval" to games dubed perfectly legit... but thats just my illinformed openion take it if you will

its a fricken REDESIGN !!!, not a psp 2 like that guy who said sumthing about the ps3 games on a ps2. for christ sake, it probably wont come out for 3 years, and when it does and its a redesign it will have all same features of current psp plus more. !!!

Well if the screen stays the same, that's good. Anything smaller than what it is now though would be tough to hold! Of course it would be compatible with the current stuff; they gotta sell all that ***** they already produced somehow.

I think I'll be glad that I have the original.

they probably wont cuz they are going to make it thinner right??

The nub is used for L2/R2 in PSX games on the psp.

ahh, yes, I only played sotn so far (the emulated version, of course, lol) and it doesn't require L2, so I totally forgot about the need for the nub. Thanks.

I wish they would work on the screen's refresh rate. If it was smaller, lighter, with a better refresh rate, I'd sell my old psp and rebuy (as soon as its hacked).

 » I agree 1000000%

With the advancements of todays technologies, i think sony can engineer your fat ass mum smaller, lighter and with a better refresh rate in bed. I would sell your mum and rebuy (as soon as she turns into a hack)

lol PSpee...lol, wonder if there going to make a slim version of PS3, probably...since there sony. This light version PSP might be tight. except i didnt like the redesign models too much like the PSone/PStwo they tend to overheat and get warm alot quicker. The PSP is already get warm. well sony mmade a success on there first portable game system and there was lots of flaws and not tough, but hopefully this new PSP will fix thouse

SEE. I TOLD YOU THEY WOULD REDESIGN THE PSP. ANYTHING TO MAKE MORE MONEY QUICKLY WITHOUT HAVING TO SPEND MORE MONEY TO MAKE A WHOLE NEW SYSTEM. JUST CHUCK ON A BRIGHTER SCREEN, EXTRA BATTERY LIFE AND A CUP HOLDER, AND SELL IT TO ALL THE CHILDREN WORLDWIDE AS A BRAND NEW PRODUCT. NICE ONE SONY.

   Re: .. (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » ..

Stfu, just stfu. I hate it when people talk when they don't know crap. I'm not a Sony fanny or anything, but c'mon. The DS got a rebuild. Why not the PSP? And from how it sounds like, it seems they're going to be adding a lot to the new PSP. Moral of story: Stfu when you don't know what you're talking about. And take off the caps lock, it makes you look like a reatard.
   by WeeJeWel (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » oh *****

As long it's compatible with all the games right now and vica versa, it's fine. But i'm not gonna buy a new PSP just because the new games wont play on it.

As long it's like DS/DS lite it's ok :))

   by Chris (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » Seems obvious...

It's clearly an attempt to revive and breathe some new life into the handheld. Its clearly getting walloped by the DS and perhaps a redesign will attract more buyers that wouldn't have given it a second look. This is only a good thing to us. More people with a PSP means more support and thus more games and features.

   Re: .. (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » ..

No. The PSP is getting beaten but not "walloped". It's actually a big hit in Korea (w/e). It also seems to be rising in NA. I think the new redesign, with the lower price tag, is going to kill the NDS. Presuming they make good games of course...

Except for the bleutooth i believe they will integrate a camera and microhone. No touch screen though because it would make games incompatible with the first PSP
