PS3 - Image 1There's a pretty good chance that Sony will be stepping up PS3 production in the coming months. According to German gaming blog Gamefront, the company now has a sufficient supply of diodes for its next gen PS3 video games console.

Sony spokesperson Takashi Uehara revealed that the company is now in possession of a sufficient supply of diodes for the PS3. According to Sony, production could increase to five million units a month. The weblated piece of news from Gamefront also hinted that Sony also has enough diodes for Blu-ray players and recorders.

A shortage of the aforementioned diodes -- which are used for the PS3's Blu-ray drive -- in turn caused a shortage of the next gen console last year.

This could be foward to a price reduction, as manufacturing steps up the price of manufacturing goes down. As they can now buy the diodes in bulk. Also with their new 65nm cell processors and taking out the emotion engine for the PS2 games im sure that a price cut is around the corner. Hopefully by about £40

» you're optimistic, but not realistic

Were they just buying a few diodes at a time before? I don't think that will save much because they really don't have enough demand to increase production now.
The 65nm CPU and GPU are still a long way off.
As long as sony loses money on selling PS3s, there will not be a price cut any time soon. Normally, game sales make back some money lost manufacturing consoles. PS3 doesn't have enough games or sales of them to make much back. All signs point to a $600 PS3 for at least another year.

Sony is losing money with every PS3 sold... i think the scenario u just outlined will be used by SOny to address that problem rather than do price cuts.

 » price drop indeed

Let me be clear, I own a ps3 already, but I would still benefit from a price drop as it would mean more ps3s would sell, and more people to play with as well as more games. That said, this will actually decrease the price, because the PS3 is priced so high, yet $ony still loses money on them. That's because the PS3 is one VERY expensive machine to manufacture and if $ony can save enough that they start to make money, then they'll star to drop the price. So more diodes, an expensive component, means cheaper diodes, means cheaper PS3, which everyone (minus 360 fanboys) would benefit from.

Yeh you might be right about tryin to recoup their loses. But because Sony is a big electrical company and they are ranking it in with their Bravia TV's they might have to lose more money to sell more consoles in the long run.

HA HA did you realize the Intelligent gamer market analysis (Unregistered) was me?

It's funny how if I use my real name nobody reads it and just votes they don't like the comment.

Supply is not the problem. How about reducing the price and getting more games?

why are they making more ps3s? no one is buying them.

they can not produce 5 mega-ps3's per month... i think that's a bit excessive given that they sell about 50,000. bring on some of the games we all want and watch sales soar.

instead of more units more games... alot more games

 » Give it Time

Why is everyone griping about more games? Give the system time, it has a bunch of games coming out that a lot of people want and will want. What would be the point of launching the PS3 without having games coming out for it or in development and about to come out.

I own a PS3 and 8 games. Oblivion, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5, Resistance, Untold Legends, Madden 07, Full Auto 2, and Need for Speed Carbon. I have FEAR ordered through Gamestop online. I should be getting it by Wednesday this week. So that would make a total of nine. As you can see im not one of those people who have just one or two games. I will admit that currently i am only playing Motorstorm, Oblivion, and Resistance. But soon to be added FEAR will take part on that list. This is just an opinion post, i am in no way taking anyones posts above mine wrong. I can disagree or agree with those points. But i would rather just enjoy my games.

» cool, this mean we'll see a price reduction

OHH yeah! Before the end of the year ( 2007 ) the ps3 will lower it's pricing :D I'd say around november, since they popped one year before that month.

Why a price reduction? They now have nothing to fear by letting too much PS3 getting sold now ( not like if they sell a lot anyway right now ) and because they deleted the useless 20g model, wich will make them save a lot of money!

Now this mean they'll make more money out of each ps3 since when the diodes are not hard to find, their price is reduced ( like everything, and this include the ps3 ).

I just hate the fact that I'll buy my PS3 this summer so I won't have the reduced price... :'(

Anyway, this news is great!

if you people above me think about it, sony is making a smart move. sure there are no games now, but in the fall when MGS4, DMC4, and maybe FF13 come out, there will be plenty of ps3s around, and many will get bought. i agree tho, better games=more ps3s sold
