PSPWe've seen USB pen drives going up to and above 32GB for quite some time now but with the demands of modern gadgets for more storage space escalating, we need more space than ever. For this reason, Sony and SanDisk have teamed up to offer the 32GB Pro-HG memory stick format.

This is based on the memory stick Pro which is a larger version of the Pro Duo you can find in your PSP (and commonly used in digital cameras). The Pro-HG technology though will extend as far as the memory stick Pro Duo, giving us the option of yes - you guessed it - allowing 32GB storage on a PSP!

Not only does the new format offer a huge storage increase, it also uses an enhanced, 8-bit parallel interface in addition to a conventional serial and 4-bit parallel interface with the interface clock frequency also on the increase to 60MHz from 40MHz.

In plain English, this means that maximum data transfer speed increases up to 480Mbps, or 60MB/s - three times as fast as that of Memory Stick PRO media. This makes it much quicker to transfer GBs of data to your memory stick from a PC or memory card slot and then effectively make it more of a portable hard drive, storing your videos, photos, and music. The
Memory Stick PRO-HG format media can be used on conventional Memory Stick PRO compliant devices as well as Memory Stick PRO-HG compliant host devices, so it'll work fine in your PSP.

This all sounds good, but I'm afraid we've led you on a little bit here. The Sony press release stated that the "development of Memory Stick PRO-HG compliant host devices is scheduled to commence in January 2007", with the recording media available in 2007 which basically means you won't be able to utilize the full benefits of this on your PSP. You should be able to get the increased storage on a PSP, possibly through a firmware update, but the transfer speeds will most likely not apply.

However, on a slightly more optimistic note, there has been much speculation that a "PSP2" device, or maybe just a different model of PSP with uprated hardware could be in the works. Who knows, we could be seeing a PSP with memory stick Pro-HG Duo support in 2007.

 » psp2...no...

if they come out with psp2...it looks like i'll be waiting another 5 years to buy a portable system thats more then likely going to sell worse then psp, i mean the only reason i bought a psp is cuz my ipod shuffle broke, i wanted to play some emulation, and watch videos, then it turns out i had a ta-082 motherboard so i can't downgrade from 2.81FW, so i think the chances are, VERY LITTLE, that i'll buy a psp2, no matter how much it costs, unless its like $200, if not i'll just consider rebuying a ps2 now that my old one is getting DRE's or just keep saving for a 360, cuz lord knows ps3 is gonna be *****ty untill people start DEVing games at full capacity

 » Hard Drive

Wouldn't it have been easier for psp just to make a 80Gb harddrive installed instead of a memory stick slot.maybe they wouldn't have to worry about making a memory stick for every ass that ask for more space, that would be a great pspfix.

 » oh wow

wow hey sony good going its ridiculous enough that we're charged 150 bucks or whatever for a 4 gig stick JUST so we can actually get some use out of these awesome "multimedia" capabilities you keep pushin.. admit it sony you've failed.. betamax.. umd.. and soon to be blueray! STOP CREATING NEW TECHNOLOGIES! you are about 3 steps ahead of everyone else and you cant keep the price low enough so you get knocked down instantly how about giving up and stop thinking about your wallets (which are hurting after you pouring all that money into a console you cant even get to stores fast enough) and think about the consumers and whatever fans you still have left give us something we can use not have to purchase a insanely expensive memory card give us a microdrive or something cheap nobody will pay 1000 bucks for a little piece of circuit board thats so small if you lose it you'll never find it again

 » Waste of time

Little kids even Sony's marketing engineers don't think about their new product's prices as much as you. Go out and chase after girls at these ages.

It doesnt mean you have to write a nonsense comment to every news. QJ have to declare an age limit for comments but I think its fun for them to read you guys calculations of 32 GB stick with comparing it to 8 GB.

Use your mind in math class :)
