Sony, Immersion sign new rumble deal - Image 1

Rumble fans, start the celebration. After Sony and Immersion settled their long-running legal battle over rumble technology, a new agreement between both companies indicates that the feature will be making a comeback soon. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony has entered into a new agreement that will see Immersion's rumble technology included in future PlayStation products.

"Our new business agreement with Sony is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation community," Victor Viegas, CEO of Immersion, commented. "We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

Details are still scarce about the agreement. For now, rumble fans will have to make do with third-party controllers that offer the feature.

   Re: Lurker (Unregistered) - 2007-03-02
» To bad for early Ps3 owners

The PS3 console its self doesnt contain rumble. So having controllers that support rumble will make no difference. Its funny how the Sony lies are building up. But we couldnt include rumble becasue is conflicted with the sixaxis.

The PS3 does have rumble, otherwise me and many otehrs are imagining our steering wheels' force feedback in NFS.

 » lurker

what are you on about, consoles dont need to contain rumble, its the controller that does lol, plus a simple d/l update will add any rumble needed. nub

   Re: antaeus - 2007-03-02
 » yup

the PS3 does have rumble build in you just need a controller that supports it and it will not be hard for Sony to send a callback for all the early controllers and replace them with the ones that have rumbles

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-03-02
 » I Agree skyler

The game is what gives the feedback to the controller and if need be, Sony can let you download a patch for rumble.

first people complain there is no rumble in the ps3. ANd now that it is coming people suddenly decide to complain that it will be pointless. why can't you ever support something? I personally think this will be a great addition to my ps3 and maybe will quiet all those nintendo and xbox fanboys.

Rumble has NOTHING to do with the console. All game makers have to do is offer an update which enables rumble in their game, and poof! you've got rumble.

 » The beast awakes

So now Sony realizes this will be a competition. I am really glad because I invested my money in a PS3 already. Sony looks to be making HUGE strides to own up to everything and give the people what they want. Today was a pretty big news day. By the way fannies don't rant about "oh Sony is just copying what company X did" really? You mean like having an online service *Cough* nintendo copied that idea. Or how about using CDs as a medai form? copied. I can go on FOREVER. The point is Sony has awaken and understood its better to emulate other companies and give customers what they want rather than marching to your own drum and selling jack to nobody. I would much rather have a company take an idea and try to make it better. You know, the CDs led to DVDs and even now HiDef discs? Yeah please please please, copy the crap out of each other, because all you are doing is creating new innovative ways to deliver us entertainment we want.

   Re: wqe (Unregistered) - 2007-03-02
» CD DVD HD EH what ? this is about Rumble

Ludikhris instead of trying to hype up Sony why dont you stick to the topic ?..

Despite what the fanboys said we all knew you cant play a driving game(Especially a sim) without rumble its impossible to get the feedback from corners wheelspin etc, same with fighting games.

Looks like 360 is proberly going to be getting tilt like functions added to their rumble pad looking at recent news.. So all in all its all going to be back to having the same sort of funtions on both pads.

   Re: theTick197 - 2007-03-03
 » uhh

the playstation was certainly not the first console to use cds. Sega CD , the Saturn, Jagaur CD, NeoGeo CD, 3DO, the list continues. cant remember which came out first but they all came out before the ps1 did.

   Re: Crow (Unregistered) - 2007-03-12
 » Ludikhris

He meant to say they used the DVD format first (which they did, and M$ and Nintendo copied). And the 360 controller sucks as it is, it's very twitchy (and the rumble will make the tilt sensing worse) and hard to control, plus the battery sucks. And when has M$ ever made a product that doesn't suck (except if they made a vacuum cleaner; that might not suck :P)?
   by comedy - 2007-03-02
 » good old sony

this is absolutely classic sony, 'we don't need rumble'
'good news, we now have rumble!'

hehehehe

but that's not a bad thing, M$ are still making the same old mistakes while sony are willing to take it on the chin and take some criticism... if only all game companies actually took heed of what their gamers wanted!

so... does this mean patches over psn for existing games might become available? or just newer games will have rumble in, and will there be a SIXAXIS 2? like, SIXAXIS-R (for rumble)?

i understand ludikhris's sentiments, it's like he's trying to stem the flaming as soon as he can. the thing is, i see ps3 (and x360 actually) as being much more capable of change and future innovation than the wii... i mean if wii had to do some sort of clever switch up then it coudln't run any games (due it's puny powers). but ps3 and x360 could do what wii does in a heart beat. of course they cost a lot more, and aren't nintendo, but it's all a big seesaw anyway.

this is good news for gaming though, although i play games with the rumble switched off i can see it as a much valued element of games, and if sony work against it then there's a chance it would fall out of favour... not anymore! hooray!!

 » Here comes the Fanboys

Before - "We don't need 1080p, the sweet spot is 720 for gaming" After - "We can now upscale games to 1080p!" Check this one out: Before - "Component cables are just as good as HDMI" After - M$ will most likely reveal their rumored system at GDC. Okay last one: Before - "The 360 is a great piece of hardware" After - "M$ expands their warranty" the truth hurts sometimes.

I hear you on that, but it's not as bad as it sounds. I know I'll do it too cause Sony has made me a ***** and I can't do ***** about it. Just argh...oh well.

   Re: antaeus - 2007-03-02

poorly design cell processor? oh wow dude the ignorance within you is strong, I guess you must be blind and can't read because then you haven't been able to see all the awards the cell is getting and all the companies that want to work on it and put it on EVERYTHING from cars to airplanes

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-03-02
 » antaeus I Agree

The cell processor is not poorly designed what so ever. It can be better than the 3 cores in some respects that microsoft has for the 360 if programmed for properly. Come on, after all some of the best chip designing companies in the world worked on it. Some of the first gen games proves testament to it like Lair, Motorstorm, and Resistance just to name a few.

Will the tilt function still be able to work with rumble on because surely it will shake the controller around too much.

 » ...

The wiimote rumbles and still works quite well....

   Re: Truth (Unregistered) - 2007-03-02
 » Wii controller

It has rumble because the motion is detected by the power strip that wii owners have to put below the tv. For the sixaxis since it's bluetooth there is no need for sensors.

   Re: animeGhost (Unregistered) - 2007-03-02
 » wii rumble

not all of the wii's motion sensing is in the strip it also has an accelerometer similar to the ps3's so when the controller is not facing the infra-red strip it can still dectect motion... the only reason for the IR strip is to dectect changes in distance and hight

   Re: Advertising -

   Re: Cole (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03
 » Power Strip

The Wii Power Strip smooths actions. It is not needed, but you'll find without it that things will be choppy.

 » I dont care a bit

about Rumble, I always put it off specially in wireless controls for battery saving.

If there is a settlement is in SONY terms, they showed to Inmersion that they are fully capable to push the PS3 without rumble, being Inmersion the only big money loser in a rumble-less PS3.

Now if DualShock3 is coming I hope SONY dont let down first adopters (big fans) and make the necessary replacement, I'm sure they already have the new control ready only waiting to be mass produced and probably DS3 is only the SIXAXIS plus a rumble enabler piece.

   Re: Act II - 2007-03-02
 » dualshock 3?

i like the sixaxis name much better

   Re: Cole (Unregistered) - 2007-03-03
 » I don't care either

I like the lightweight comfortable feel that the sixaxis has. I don't want force feedback back. :(
   by comedy - 2007-03-02
 » erm...

i reckon the way they measure acceleration for sixaxis is through piezo-electrics... this is a good way, and with proper thinking and precautions any effect rumble has on the motion sensing would be easily taken care of. for a start the amplitude of rumble oscillations is tiny compared to when a player swings the sixaxis around.

the wii accelerometers don't use the power strip, that is used to detect position. what does this mean? erm... basically if wiimote works with rumble and motion sensing then there's no reason sixaxis can't.

and bluetooth cannot detect position with only one sensor... it's just not doable.

I still don't care for rumble, I like the lightness of the SixAxiS. What I think is more important and have been saying it since I got my PS3 is the fact that

ANALOG IS NOT ON EVERY BUTTON LIKE THE OLD DUAL SHOCK

This is a VERY important feature that has been omitted/forgotten/removed from all the face buttons and L1/R1. I can tell you this, I won't be buying "just" a rumble controller only to have Sony release a SixAxiS with Rumble AND all analog buttons.

I will chance it and wait or just buy a standard SixAxiS when the price drops on them because people want the NEW rumble one.

» ANALOG IS NOT ON EVERY BUTTON LIKE THE OLD DUAL SHOCK

YES IT IS!!!!! They even made the buttons stick out more to give you a better feel of it. Go and try some PS2 games that used the feature as proof.

WOW! While I stand corrected and am glad to be shown it does work, I was under the understanding it wasn't. All because of RR7, which does NOT implement the function and is the reason why I was mistaken. Thank you Extinction, appreciated.

I too have noticed the blatant increased amount of Sony bashing AOTS has been dishing out as of late. It's at that point where I fast forward through "The Feed" or when Olivia tries to speak on stuff she obviously has NO sense or information about.

When Sony truly gets on it's feet in the near future with amazing titles like MGS, GT, etc. a lot of people will be shown as the hypocrites they really are.

I know that Kojima has been one of the biggest opponents to taking out the rumble feature. In my own twisted mind I think that he had something to do with it coming back.

" Hello Kaz? It's Hideo! Yes, how are you? Good Good, Guess what I'm Going Multi-Platform With MGS4. Uh-huh. Ohhh you are bringing back rumble. Good Deal I guess I'll stay exclusive then. Yea, Ok I'll just tell Microsoft to ***** off then. Bye."

I'm glad it's coming back. I hope they can implement it into future games and add it to existing ones like RFOM With Patches.

This is what I have been telling my friend from the begining, the only reason they removed it was due to the legal issues, tilt sensing and rumble have been together since the early 90's if i remember correctly, their was a controller back then that had both and they worked fine.

They've got to be prepping the psp 2.0 soon/now... Make up with Immersion for the new psp w/ rumble? The controller sure, but something must have made them go "ok, we really need to get this over with" for the project to go ahead, me thinks.

Rumble in a handheld would be damn cool!

You would end up dropping a psp with any sort of violent rumble - it would be really soft and tbh i really dont like rumble on games like MOH where it seems to be on ALL the time. The option would be extremely nice though!!!
