Ps3 ControllerUpon the announcement of the Sony PS3 Controller, it wasn't surprising that Nintendo fanboys are vehemently arguing that Sony stole the idea from Nintendo. So with that, Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison has declared that Sony first began brewing the idea for the controller more than a decade ago.

He further added that Sony had been thinking about this idea since 1994 and he said "in reality you can't make some of the ideas that we have because the technology is not available in sufficient quantity or at a low enough price, and you kind of have to wait for certain things to converge." Apparently, the Sony people already have plans to show it as early as last year but Harrison said that "we didn't show it last year, because we weren't ready to."

He also said that  they were not  influenced by the positive reception that the Nintendo controller received since they have their own research about it, in other words, they were heavily influenced by their extensive research and not by the public's reception of the Ninty controller.

But it seems that Mr. Harrison is contradicting his own statements because he went on to say that "We (Sony) didn't start the wave, but we've kind of jumped onto that wave." So what is the real score then?!

 » Yeah

Yeah, some of us already knew that long time ago. But looks like the Wii-fans are just bored and didn't know what else to do but critizise Sony.

honestly the sony remote and the wii-mote aren't similar, gyro technology is nothing new, so who cares.

Firstly this is the PS3 qj site.

Secondly, does it really matter that much? so what if they copied nintendo, its not exactly the same its aimed to do different things.

Finally, 360 sucks ass

it comes down to:
playstation would not have put in motion senseing if nintendo hadent.

it'd be like sony making something called the Pbox 350 and saying that they werent mimicing microsoft becuse the name has been discussed since 1996.

it doesnt matter when you started thinking about it.. it matters WHEN you apply it.

» PS3 and Wii are completely diff

The WiiMote and PS3 controller are completely different!

Wii's controller senses motion,
PS3's controllers senses tilting

Obviosuly the WiiMote has higher technology in it, but motion sensing can be bad at times (i.e in the night), while the ps3 controller can work at all times.

WiiMote = Better technology, with maybe some problems
PS3 Controller = Standard Technology, may have some flaws, works at all times.

X360 Controller = nothing new

 » Do Your Research fellas.

At 1up.com theres a number of posters (adults not kids) who were able to go to E3.He asked around when the PS3 had started using the tilt technology. He got a number of answers from Sony of America employees including: as short as last weekend, a week ago, and I didn't even know about it till the conference. Why do you think Warhawk was the only game using it. It wasn't just that guy either but IGN as well asked. But who cares?

» Sony is a bunch of Lyars

Sony's decision to put the tilt feature was because Nintendo of Nintendo's new feature. It's simple to understand, really.

Yes maybe Sony had talked about it in the past, but no one was willing to step out, actually take the change and do it. Since Nintendo stepped out, Sony had to compete. Maybe they didn't copy Nintendo, but if the Wii didn't have the wiimote, then I guarantee you that Sony's controller wouldn't have tilt.

 » Who *****ing cares?

Who cares if they copied the idea of the motion/tilt detection controller or not? Really? What *****ing difference does it make AT ALL? None. Nintendo has one, and so does Sony.

Fanboys *****ing suck. Every last one of you.

 » ahmm......

well they spended so much time creating tilt sensing, they should have spending some nights more to integrate rumbling too. they cant get off with saying "its disrupts tilt sensing" while others had solved the problem, and gone even one step ahead. ^ - ~

 » Wake up!

Sony isn't copying Nintendo, actually, they're both using technology that's been developed before they incorporated them in to their concoles. Problem is you can't use that sort of tech if your console doesn't support it.

Sony and Nintendo have both decided to include new technology into their consoles, not new to the world but new to the consoles, both being different.... Sony uses tilt sensing with a mechanism in their controller and Nintendo uses a motion sensor that simulates the movements you make with their remote on to the screen.

I never heard ANY console manufacturer of inventing a new peripheral to play their games. If Nintendo actually came up with the motion sensor then they're in the wrong business.

Point being, if you think once a company uses a piece of hardware that no one else does yet, it doesn't mean no one else can. You would end up with only one console with a controller, another with a remote and another with who knows what, a whole body suit maybe.

That is what Phil Harrison was saying "We (Sony) didn't start the wave, but we've kind of jumped onto that wave."

Now, what all you guys out there have to realize is what are the games that you like to play(which could span all of these consoles, including XBox), thats all, cause if you become a tool(fanboy for putting it lightly), which is what they(SoNinBox) are hoping for, you won't get to enjoy anything else but your "precious."

For those of you that still don't get it, just read this over a few times to let it sink in and repeat "I am not a tool, I have my own opinion." Not trying to offend anyone, but it seems a lot of people forgot how to think for themselves instead of listening to the latest popularity contest. Like joining a cult, you lose your freedom of speech and start to listen to what ever Master has to say.

Enjoy your new SoNinBox! And that's all

there are controllers available that do not have tilt, but do have rumble.

 » Name that Game

krepler(#14), Name the last game that you played with a tilting or motion sensing controller. You're saying its not new tech and I agree its not. But there is a big difference between things being done and failing and Nintendo and Sony doing them.

If Sony and Nintendo both patent their technologies then are are new. They have to be to be patented. I know Nintendo has patented theirs. Maybe they got some ideas from other things, but that doesn't mean Nintendo or Sony is copying anyone.

However the fact is that Sony put in their tilt function because of what Nintendo did.

 » The point is.....

for those of you wondering what the point of all these people complaining is, allow me to enlighten you. yes, a majority of them are nintendo fanboys, or so i'd venture. but heres the thing. this isnt the first time sony has done this. sony didnt invent analog. they kiped it. sony didnt invent rumble, which they claimed they did, as far as consoles go, but they stole that too, and got sued over it. and now all of a sudden sony is claiming that theyve had this idea for over 10 years? why not file a patent? if they truly DID have this idea so long ago, trust me, theyd've filed. i mean come on, were talking about the company who filed a patent on games that either are controlled by, or transmit directly into, your mind. as it stands, they did NOT file a patent, their ORIGINAL controller, sucky and boomerang-like though it may have been, did NOT have the tilt sensing, and more importantly, its been done before. this is another case of sony stealing tech, claiming it as their own, and with any luck, theyll get sued again.

and to any sony fanboys i just pissed off, i owned a ps1 before i traded it for a ps2, and got a psp on launch day. i love them as much as you. but look at the facts. your company steals ideas.

wario ware twist and kirby tilt on the gba.

you asked for one but i give you two

and the point isnt wii came out with new tech, they never said that they said something diff, because you can go to toysrus and pick up these mini consoles that do what wii does, tennis, bowling and boxing. I've seen it before the only thing wii is doing is making those games better (so i hope).

back to my point we are not talking about new tech as i cleared up top. we are talking about the fact that sony is that kid in school that what ever he sees you doing he does to make himself look cool. case in point they said that xblive was garbage, now there coming out with hub or what ever they call it. nintendo says that we have a motion control controllers and a virtual library of older games, so sony does the same thing for the ps3 and psp. it makes you wonder if sony sits down and waits to see who is doing what so we can make something that resembles it and call it are own.

i could care less who wins because competition is good but i would like sony to lose its footing as leader, if all they do is copy ideas from others and then just flat out lie about it! i have no sympathy for a liar, like last years cgi fest saying that they where actual real time game play footage. they do the same thing every time they bring out a new tech, they say pump up the specs and then when it finally comes out it has half of what they promised.

i don't know when somebody promises me some thing i expect them to deliver

 » Whatever

Say whatever you want but I feel pretty sure that if it wasn't for the Nintendo announcment regarding their montion sensor controller Sony would not have included the "tilt" functions in the PS3 controller.

They may have thought of it ten years ago but they still wouldn't have used it and even now they have used it in a FAR less effective manor than Nintendo.

Don't get me wrong I think the tilt function is cool and it will make driving and flying games a lot of fun, but I can't think of many other games it will improve. For instance playing FPS on the Wiivolution will be awhole new experience. What will the tilt function bring to FPS's? Nothing I can think of.

So all you Nintendo fanboys are saying is that, if Sony put a DVD-Player in the PS2, Microsoft can't copy and put a DVD-Player in the Xbox too huh? Idiots.

 » no copy,

they didn't copy the idea, but they implemented it now rather than the next next gen console they may make. they simple said "hey nintendo is doing it now... why not us!" they didn't "copy" anything.

we already know that ATARI had motion sensitive controllers... and then microsoft developed some about 15 years ago... so no one has copied.

 » Liar!

They had an idea since 1994 ?! Why didnt they say so in the first place before wii ever existed ? BULL*****, Sony. You big liar, you! *ROLL EYES*

 » MS fanboys are jealous

XBox360 owners are jealous that the PS3 will have something that the xbox wont come with standard.

Right now microsoft may play down the idea of motion sensing but they are probably going back to the dev table and asking themselves why didnt they do this as well.

I have no doubt microsoft will start developing a motion sensing mechanism to counter the wii and ps3. Motion sensing will be the new craze and anyone not in the boat will get left behind.

Motion tracking is probably patented by nintendo. Motion tilting by sony. we will just have to wait and see what MS makes up for the motion sensing craze.

 » rumbling interferes with tilt

yea...I can believe that. But more than likely it's cause of the lawsuit against them on the rumbling technology. Microsoft handled it well, here's a settlement and now we just bought your company. Sony tried to fight it and isn't doing to well. They're using stall tactics after the court ruled against them. Appealing and such...

» What about the rumble feature

so no one noticed the fact that rumble feature was used by all companies. also.. why did that company wait so god damned long to sue.. more money? poor bastards

Vietone this had nothing to do with the 360 but i would rather have rumble than some motion tilt function which will probably only be used in a couple of games like flight sims.

Doesn't realy seem like anything that most people would care about anyway.

 » Funny

I'm not saying that Sony stole the idea from Nintendo, but I find it hard to believe that they were working on that for a decade. I also find it funny that Sony pulls the plug on the boomerang controller after Nintendo showed their controller. I would also like to add how different the controllers are. The Wiimote is controlled with one hand and detects itself in a 3D environment, while the PS3 controller simple has tilt funtionality. I would also like to add to all the Nintendo Fanboys, that you should recall what Iwata said, and that was that they [Nintendo] wanted to change the direction of gamming, I think the recent news about the PS3 controller shows that Nintendo has succeded.

 » Xbox360 fans

lol and if the ps2 didn't come microsoft wouldnt step up and release xbox. Xbox360 remote is the exact same as the xbox so nothing is innovative as well. I don't understand why all the xbox fanboys have to come post here about innovation and argue about sony because microsoft has shown nothing new the only thing they have to fall back on is the global online hub. It has all been done before everything for all systems get over it.
