Sony Australia to release 40GB PlayStation 3 - Image 1Following the announcement of 40 GB Playstation 3s for the UK, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has also stated that they will be launching the same model on October 11. It will be going for a recommended retail price of AUS$ 699 or about US$ 629.

Like other PS3s, it works as a Blu-Ray Disc player and is still compatible with both Standard Definition and High Definition TVs up to 1080p. However, this new model is no longer backward compatible with PlayStation 2 titles and doesn't have a multi-memory card port. It also comes with two less USB 2.0 ports than older units.

Judging from the console's features, the 40 GB PlayStation 3 looks to to be geared towards people who watch movies regularly but also want the option to occasionally play a couple of games. We'll have to wait and see if this strategy drives up consumer interest for the product.

Thanks to Regan for the tip!

 » well..

I use the media hub but many people just plug the media device (psp camera ect) to the usb and the gb is good because anyone who needs more is the people thinking to purchase a 250gb one or a little less... two usb ports? thats fine... I only use one to charge the controllers... but the backward compatible is a must but oh well.. I don't played a ps2 game since a while... well.. GOW2 and before that no other... so busy with next gen... but people like me isn't mayority... glad to be a 60gb owner but feel sorry for recents owner and for sony... just hope that this version don't appear to be like the same way of the 20gb version...

Anyway like I said... this version is for the ones who want to buy a more cheap blu-ray player with a more media center and for the ones in the next gen and nothing more...
