Sony has announced that they expect to ship 10 million PS2s, 12 million PSPs and 6 million PS3s between April 1st, 2006 and March 31st, 2007.

In the last fiscal year, Sony reported $1.66 Billion US in profit, about 68% higher than the year before. This was mostly due to high sales of the Bravia TVs and the sales of the PSP and Vaio PCs picking up (although Sony's axing of 5,700 jobs and 9 factories doubtlessly helped, too).

Next year, Sony predicts a profit of $872 Million US because of the costs of the PS3 launch. They also expect PSP and PS2 sales to go down.

It's very noticeable that Sony relies on its PlayStation brand to move a profit. Many of their other sectors are in the red and PlayStation is keeping them alive. Hopefully they don't screw up too much with the PS3 or PlayStation won't be the only thing we see disappear. Sony might seem unstoppable, but after all so did Nintendo after the SNES.

the point in this article, if you haven't guessed is thier 'predictions'... that is, what hasn't already happened. like post7 said.

whoa, half the profit of last year... doens't sound so healthy. let's all go buy some psp games to make up for it ok?

but ps3 can't fail... it can't, i wont' let it! i'll buy millions of copies of games if it does, i promise!

 » guys, cut the stupidity

But honestly though, sony announced two months ago it expexted to ship 14 million units of the ps2, and 13mil of the PSP, which was revised after good sales...now you are saying the re-revised it? What the hell is going on?

As for the 68% higher profit than last year...hate to tell you they made a loss last year, so any profit would be higher, not just 68% as it states...who is reporting this stuff. Go check the facts first (I know the guy who posts it didn't write it, but damn!?! What is magicbox doing?

As for the predicted reduction in profits...its attributed to the absorbed costs of launching the PS3 into the market...but really...this article is horrible.

What the hell does that mean? Nintendo has been, and still is a huge success around the world. I can't wait for every one's mouths to drop in awe when they unveil the Wii at E3. Good luck to everyone who is buying a 600, 700, or 800 dollar PS3 that is in danger of using a technology which may realize the same fate as the lazer disc.

 » me a fanboy?

just cos i said i'd never let ps3 die?

it takes a single word out of place to get branded a fanboy nowadays.

sony makes a lot of money, but they want more. did these announcements of profits etc show a change in share price?

would it be a good idea to go buy some sony shares right now? i mean, as they've pretty much just had one of their worst year. ps2 is old, psp is just out, ps3 is leeching funds... but then they hope to take the world on with ps3.

» I'd never think Sony was unstoppable

"Sony might seem unstoppable, but after all so did Nintendo after the SNES."

Especially not after how they messed up on the PSP launch with ISOs being so easy. They must really think we're stupid if they thought we were too thick to code our own programs.

And besides, How were Nintendo stoped ater the SNES? OK the N64 didn't get as many great games as it, but Nintendo are still running fine. They may have stupid console naming guys, but thats not killing them.

» Are Wii Fanboys the most clueless out there?

For those stupid enough to think Nintendo makes more money:

Microsoft
Profits: 8.88 Bil
Assets: 85.94 Bil
Market Value: 287.02 Bil

Sony
Profits: 0.98 Bil
Assets: 68.04 Bil
Market Value: 38.00 Bil

Nintendo
Profits: $0.57 Bil
Assets: $9.06 Bil
Market Value: 12.80 Bil

Not only that Most of the profits from Sony are from the playstation and most of the expenses (the many many other markets they support) are from their other departments, cut those out and Sony would be amazingly profitable (in the order of 10 times more than Nintendo).

Nintendo is the puniest of the three and there current 2005 profits were unprecedented due to the DS selling amazingly well in Japan. The handheld market is the only thing keeping Nintendo alive

For those dumba$$es that think Nintendo is their Daddy hey you dummies don't believe every blog entry you read about Nintendo being the most profitable. The people writing those are closed minded fanboys like yourself.

» 2005 worldwide stats by the way

Those are for 2005 the only ones available. Sony's $1.66 Billion for the US is correct. The problem with having such a huge worldwide multifacet company is that the rest of the departments eat up your profit. They might be Black in the US but red in another region meaning it drops up their profit.

Nintendo only has a few markets (Pokemon, Gaming). They have less risk and are not involve in technological breakthroughs therefore not really all that exiting as a company however they are stable but whats the fun in that.

the only thing who keep nintendo alive is handheld in japan and all around in NA and UK they sell like nothing beside microsoft and sony....

even if its refering to the future... you wouldnt put a past date of APRIL 1, 2006. the system isnt even finished so how can you report sales until the date of release. i guess ill wait for some fanboy to come and call me retarded or some crap now, since it seems rationalizing things isnt part of this site
