Taken from http://www.planetsave.com/ps_mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7148&Itemid=61Over at Smarthouse, they've written an interesting article on sodas and how it affects gamers. It's funny how that works though, since the information they've put in is applicable to most soda-drinkers.

The strangest thing about this article is how soda is presented much like a drug. While specifically mentioning Coke and how there used to be cocaine in it a very long time ago, they may have taken the angle a bit too far, even while trying to explain the problems with having too much sugar in your system. That being said, the article is insightful for showing what happens in one hour after grabbing that soda, but also makes it somewhat alarmist.

For instance, they mention that you take in your daily recommended allowance of sugar within the first ten minutes of drinking that one soda. "You don't immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness," the article continues, "because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down."

Even more interesting here is their description at the forty-minute mark:

Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dialate (sic), your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.

So, are gamers taking drugs? Maybe, but then so is everyone else as far as this article is concerned. The sugar and caffeine crash they talk about here should happen to almost anyone who drinks a soda, but is probably more noticeable in people whose butts are parked around a PC or console, such as ourselves.

Still, it kind of explains why some gamers fall asleep during those eight-hour raids through Molten Core and still don't mind having gaming marathons. Maybe we should get more exercise besides DDR. What do you think?

 » i live on dr.pepper zero

but that has no sugar! admittedly it does have aspartame which has been shown to be bad for you, but without an ice cold dpz i can't do anything. - i don't drink coffee or tea though, so that's where i get my caffeine -

i have to say that having converted to 'zero' soft drinks i can't stand drinking the sugary ones - they make my teeth hurt.

i also drink a lot of water and do quite a bit of exercise, i'm no couch potato

i always drink Coke. lol there may still be cocaine in it cuz im addicted to that stuff like mad lol.

lol i wud be surprised if people didnt know that when coke was first made they put cocaine in it to get people addicted and keep buying it lol. i knew that from a long time ago, and the name is pretty obvious too:

Coca-Cola = COCAine-Cola

 » I'm sure

Almost everyone over eighteen already knew that. As far as being addicted, I am not like that with soda. I have never done any drugs or drunk before so I don't know how it can be, but one very related thing is when I went to Peru for two weeks. The altitude is so high there that most people from the South of North America like me will pass out just doing regular things.

Solution? We had to drink what they called 'Coca-tea'. It was some sort of tea brewed from cocaine leaves or something that thins your blood out and keeps you from passing out. It was a requirement that we drank at least two cups a day. The stuff tasted horrible at first and most of us dreaded drinking it, but by the third day we were hooked. We'd wake up and be like "where's my friggan Coca-tea, man?!"

So I guess that addiction stuff holds true. I think I went into withdrawl when I came back to the states, lol.

» I game in free time

I would say I spend 1 maybe 2 hours a day playing a game. Could be a PC, Xbox or PS game.

I find that a good shower is a better option then drinking soda. DDR was a game I played very often and now, maybe once a week. Was a great way to lose weight and increase endurance. Lost alot of weight during high school and can now run a mile in less then 9 minutes. Cant say the same for my friends who look more fit then me.

Soda is a bad habit. Taste is an addicting factor in most peoples lives. Just like how a kid would often choose soda over juice, alot of gamers drink soda over the healthier alternatives.

I remember going to LAN parties where people would play so long that they would crash on their keyboards. Lots of MMO games have problems of people falling asleep when playing. It happens often in FFXi and WOW as far as I have seen.

I drink coffee, but only to study. When it comes to gaming, I find it helps not to have anything really influencing you too much.

 » not me at least

I only drink real juice drinks, not soft drinks.
It takes way better! :D

note: last summer my familly ( I live with my parents, and I'm 21... lame, I know, lol ) moved out for 2 weeks and I bought a pack of coke, but errr, after a week of drinking almost only coke, I drinked a glass of water and hated it! :| and it really shocked me, because my friends don't like water and they drink soft drinks a lot... so I stopped and I took almost one week to re-start loving the taste of water! WTF!

so now I only drink soft drinks with pizza or sometimes at school, nothing more, man this ***** really scrap your tastes! at least now I understand why one of my friend hate about anything, I suppose it's because he scrapped his tongue with the soft drinks, he drank on that for years!

anyway, I better love fresh juice, it's giving more energy so you can play longer :D, like I'd want something else, lol!

Cognition

or those that don't know what that is here:
The term cognition (Latin: cognoscere, "to know") is used in several loosely related ways to refer to a faculty for the human-like processing of information, applying knowledge and changing preferences. While I'm a fan of pepsi myself, I don't mind drinking green tea every so often.
