New photos of the PSP's 1Seg Tuner have graced the Internet. The 1Seg Tuner is a device that can allow the PSP to view digital television broadcasts. It is attached through the USB port like the Go!Cam.

PSP TV Tuner - Image 1 PSP TV Tuner - Image 2 PSP TV Tuner - Image 1

So from what can be discerned, the 1Seg Tuner will have its very own icon in the PSP XrossMediaBar and on entering the program, a menu displaying all the available channels will appear on the right. The full screen option is available, and (if it's safe for us to assume) can be brought up by the R button.

The Tuner will only work on the PSP Slim (or PSP 2000, but Slim sounds more familiar) and will launch in Japan late next month. More updates on this as they get fed into our own QJ tuners.

Does this thing connect via USB? If so maybe devs could hack it for the PSP-1000...

» Truth why America won't see this...

The truth why this isn't gonna be released in the US is because the only country where over 99% of the medium and high class people are up to date with technological advances are japanese. The truth is that if they do this in the US or almost any other country it will be a loss for any TV company to host this new service cause only a few people will know about it. In addition, to back this up you all know how poorly portable handheld televisions sold in the US? well you probably don't remember them but you don't see them being sold now, in japan many people bought portable handheld televisions and they still are being sold (and for all those US haters, what happenned in the US goes as well in England, Australia, Canada, ect.).

 » Wait...

I just received information that this is also gonna be released in the UK and PAL territories a few months after Japan. Something is wrong as I know this won't be that succesful in the UK and PAL territories...

I would buy this. I like the idea of having an all in one entertainment system small enough to take with me.

second :D

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » Yeah but

that you would buy it doesn't mean it's gonna be succesful. In fact, I bet the majority of people who come to pspupdates for news would buy this because they know a lot of their psp. But to a business standard it would be a failure cause outside this noone will know of the service or know the psp's capability or about new technology and will ignore this, there will be losses if any TV companie decided to host signal for the psp. Now if it were to watch only local channels I could see a possibility since it won't need any agreements between tv companies and the product could be sold by sony to retails but how would they get that to cheap price? Will it be a good investment? Or would it be horrible and actually bring losses due to production cost?

   Re: SomeGuy (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » I don't know about america

But in Australia we have many portable TV's, maybe in america you use too much cable tv. cable has only really taken off in the last several years here, there is no need for special services we've got free to air tv you can pick up anywhere.

I'm pretty sure it will work with other psp regions.
Chotto Shot and the GPS worked. Why not this?

   Re: Andrew (Unregistered) - 2007-08-09
 » Japan Only

It will worki n Japan only because we (US) dont get these signals. The only thing we get over here is DVB-T signals, which can allow us to watch FreeView, but Sony still wont make an accessory for that either! So unless you like in Japan, you can not get these signals. Sure you can mod a PSP to run it....but you will get 0 channels...always.

   Re: crzycop - 2007-08-09
 » Hack one

So if the US can only get DVB-T signals, then someone should just make a mod and a hack to allow us to watch TV. I say this should be another contest for QJ.

 » original psp

Maybe its just me, but i have a feeling that someone is gonna make a homebrew or mod that will allow the tuner to work on an original psp. While its not certain, it seems likely, cuz most people wont buy a psp slim just for the tuner, and people would want it

haha, so you are pissed off at Sony, and as a result you don't buy a PSP but you will buy a SONY PS3. That makes a lot of sense.

   Re: lol (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » lol

lol, u will still support SonyXD, if u wanna protest then buy a WII, DS or 360. then write it here so Sony can see it and maybee if they see enough pissed people they release it to the old PSP and all countries. I want one for my old PSP to. But I need PS3 for MGS4 and therefore I can't buy the slim as I actually was thinking about. I love sony consoles, but I agree that Sony is doing a lot of things wrong now. If it hadn't been for MGS4 I had bought a 360 tomorow.

Thats pretty sad forcing people to buy the new PSP. Whats even sadder is that even the Sega Game Gear had a TV tuner. Why was it so hard to make one earlier?

All the baby cryers talking shight about SONY as
if their twisting your arms to go out and buy a
new one, get over your selves.

I know what it is, people are just pissed that
Japan gets all the cool stuff years before US
does, if we ever get it at all.

We don't even have an NTFC GoCAM yet but everybody else gets a GoCAM for their region.

SONY must hate Americans though, I mean think
about it, a lot of stuff gets released to others long
before it's released to the US.

Ok, so to rap it up... Japan gets ChottoShot and Digital
Broadcast TV receiver adaptor. Americans get... FAT LIP!

Re: Jesus Man (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » SONY should...

Just to prove me wrong, release a US NTSC GoCAM and a US Broadcast TV receiver adapter but, they wouldn't do that now would they. Noooooooo.

   Re: verbatim (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
» I think they hate Europe more

Well, that goes for everyone in the gaming industry. It seems that they really hate europe. Or, I know it is because of sales, but damn it was annoying when they released MGS:PO 6 months earlier in US and japan than europe, I was about to import, but because of that Sony sued lik sang a while ago They couldn't ship it over here. A while later i hacked my PSP and they "forced2 me to DL it. And I want to support MGS and FF because theyr'e so damn good, not even to begin talking about suporting my beloved PSP who suffers real bad because of piracy.

   Re: ... ... (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » verbatim

stop talking s.h.i.t. if you really want to support the game, there are a lot of places you can import it, don't give lame excuses for downloading games

 » what they should do

is release an upgraded version of the gocam in the Us at least 3 or 4 megapixel cuz 1.3 come on i got more resolution on my cellphone. or release also the gps thing. the tv capture thing who cares :s i mean that doesn't allow you to watch cable tv or satellite :s does it so what's the point ?

   Re: doodad (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » yup!

I'd much rather have a 4 MP GoCam than this tuner (unless they make a US one that can save programs to the mem stick)

 » 1seg

For mobile TV, 1seg is broadcasted in ISDB-T here in Japan.
Same system used in the mobile phone, pda, electronic dictionary etc.. here.

So I doubt they will make different version of the system, as it is not deployed every where.

Korea is more like to get it and they use T-DMB standard.

by Andrew Showers (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » Dang

I really would like to have a TV Tuner but no, We (U.S.A) dont bother broadcasting television through the air. Japan is always ahead of us by like 10x. Everyone in Japan is walking around with TV on all their portable devices, Cell Phones included.

We have DVB-T (Yes, in the US) which can use Freeview, and thats nice and all, but the PSP doesnt have a tuner for that. I would like to see somebody find a way to make a DVB-T receiver work on a PSP, that would be sweet. Because honestly, TV on a psp would be really nice, I dont like locationfree player because being by a hotspot is such a hassle. And the price for DVB-T portable devices is around $300, why not just find a way to get it working on a PSP, the tuners cost $20. And yes, some of them will actually connect to a PSP USB Port, its just a matter of getting it running.

 » PAL release

This product will be released in the uk and across all PAL territories to the PSP-2000. The uk version will be modified so it can receive "Freeview" channels (DVB-T) rather than analogue because as of 2008 the analogue signals will be shut down in the uk. As far as i am aware the product will be released early 2008 in the uk and across all PAL territories.
