Gonna work his magic at the GDC - Image 1While CES 2007 became Bill Gates' stage, more or less, as he unveiled a lot of numbers and other stuff, GDC 2007 could stand to become Shigeru Miyamoto's stage. Latest PR has the great mind behind Mario and Zelda set to deliver the keynote address for this year's Game Developers Conference, the first keynote he's giving since 1999. And when you are talking about Miyamoto-san, and when the title of his speech is entitled "A Creative Vision", and the conference is all about game developers, yeah, you know the magic to expect from him that day and place (that would be March 5 in San Francisco).

Miyamoto will be joining fellow Ninty devs Eiji Aonuma and Koji Kondo, Peter Molyneux, Ubisoft hottie Jade Raymond, and others who will lecture on... well, game development. We're talking about a few of the minds that are pushing some of the hottest titles through their development paces. Who wouldn't want an invite to this conference?

 » mm Jade Raymond :P

lol. sigh, I wonder if anyone really gives a damn about ubisoft or AC or in fact everyone is just caught staring at the ever lovely Ms Raymond.

 » "Creative Vison," eh?

kind of like, "Wii Prove our Promise," right? where they announced Mario Strikers and that War game? yawn.

if you want to really be creative an innovate, Nintendo, make a game that doesn't star a 20 year old character. that'd be nice.

i grew up on Mario in the 80's, got turned on to Samus and Link during the SNES era, but i want something new from you guys now. until then, i don't care about what you have to say about "creativity."

and yeah, Jade Redmond is definitely a hottie.

Bad mouthing is your only defense against a well established leader in the game development business. All your games that you love are made based off this guys ideas. So sure you may hate him but you have to respect him for getting you the games you want to play. Plus he just keeps making awesome games himself!! way better than any chit you think is good

   Re: Figboy - 2007-01-22
 » wha?

who says i hate him?

i've been playing his games for 20 years, so i think i've earned the right to criticize him when he wants to spout off about new and innovative ideas, then proceeds to churn out Mario sequel number 1 million on a piece of hardware that is, basically, six years old. ironic, don't you think?

the problem with criticizing Nintendo, is that people seem to have this sort of hive mentality that Nintendo is perfect. it's kind of like Star Wars fans who refuse to admit that the prequel trilogy was a big fat piece of *****.

the truth of the matter is that Nintendo, and Shigeru Miyamoto, talented and creative as they may be, are still giving us the same types of experiences we've been having since 1985 on the NES, with minor updates.

but as soon as someone points that out, they're labeled as being a hater, or simply not understanding.

last i checked, truly innovative and unique games like Indigo Prophecy, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts, Metal Gear Solid, and Viewtiful Joe and Okami were not created by Nintendo or Miyamoto.

Yes, Shigeru Miyamoto saved the gaming industry back in 1985 when he released Super Mario Bros on the NES, but he can't be the originator of everything that is unique or innovative. it doesn't work that way.

i'm 27 years old, i know my gaming history, and i know where to give credit wher credit is due, but the problem is that diehard, rosecolored glasses wearing Nintendo fanatics don't want to do the same. Microsoft and Sony have brought some amazing things to gaming, as have other developers and publishers like Capcom, Konami, Pandemic, Sega, Lionhead, Bioware, etc.

Not everything is Nintendo's. the sooner people realize this, the better and happier they will be.

jesus. you can't even make a tiny criticism of Nintendo without people getting up in arms.

i'm sure if i sad the same exact thing, and replaced "Nintendo" with "Sony," i'd have been given a medal.

 » I agree

I love my xbox but i have to give respect where respect is due, that is the problem with all these younger gamers they don't know the history, I don't believe nintendo revived gaming back in the 80's but no one can deny that Mr miyamoto did come up with game designs first, games such as the first platform adventure game in super mario bros for the nes and again with the first true 3D console game in super mario 64 for the first true 3D game console nintendo 64 with the first game controller built for a true 3D game world, will nintendo and miyamoto revolutionize gaming again with the wii, will motion sensing dual controllers become the norm for game controllers, time will tell?

first off he makes mario games but he also makes new IP's each year. Plus they aren't yet another FPS. You say that everyone belives Nintendo is perfect when in fact everyone is getting brainwashed that ms is perfect when all they want is to buy out everything and then just say they are the best. I've played games for about the same amount as you and for the whole of it I seem to think. Sony was great for putting games on CD's and the DVD's MS was great for putting out a killer live system, and Nintendo's great for just making the best games. Which is why Miyamoto is making this key note speech.

   Re: Figboy - 2007-01-23
 » sure

Miyamoto is making this speech because he is Miyamoto, and the Wii is living in amazing hype world.

why didn't they have the guy who made the excellent Psychonauts give a speech? that game was wildly creative, and fun. what about Clover Studios and Okami? great game all around. Quantic Dream, makers of Indigo Prophecy and upcoming Heavy Rain?

these are people that are genuinely pushing gaming in different directions, altering the mold that Nintendo created (and still sticks to), since 1985.

Sony has done more than just put games on CDs and DVDs. Microsoft is just good for buying up talented developers to make games for their consoles.

Sony created Ape Escape (the first game to use every single button on the Dual Shock controller, and in intuitive ways, such as rowing a boat using the analog sticks, and controlling your character with the left analog stick, and other gadets, like RC Cars and planes, with the right analog stick).

the thing that you seem to not want to accept, is that Nintendo doesn't create everything. yes, they make great games, but they are hardly the best. and they aren't the only companies who made these games.

who made Ninja Gaiden on the X Box? Team Ninja

who made Ico and Shadow of the Colossus? Team Ico.

who made Half Life and Half Life 2? Valve.

who made Castlevania? Konami.

and the list goes on and on. last i checked, the games that are constantly recognized for pushing the envelope of technology *AND* delivering a gaming experience are not always Nintendo (insert numerous awards for Oblivion, Half Life 2, Resident Evil 4, Neverwinter Nights, etc).

it's not a knock against Nintendo, just a reality check for closeminded Nintendo fans, who refuse to even give up just a little bit of credit.

also, Miyamoto may make new IPs each year, but how many of them have stuck and become truly, truly classic? Pikmin? nope? Nintendogs? er, it's a game about raising puppies. people have been doing that in the real world for years. and last time i checked, puppied weren't ficitional characters. Animal Crossing? i admittedly love this game, but is there really a game in there besides fishing and slaving for that asshat Tom Nook?

once again, Nintendo isn't the originator of everything.

and i am worried for the industry (an industry that has always strived because of pushing technology forward), if Nintendo, as influential as they are, push this "less technology is more" thing to the point where everyone else adopts that mentality. at that moment, gaming will stagnate, and the industry will die.

since gaming started, developers have been trying to mimic reality, and film. with consoles like the PS3 and 360, that goal is closer than ever.

and besides the obvious cosmetical changes games undergo when new technology is introduced, the types of games that are created is changed also. do you really think a game like Grand Theft Auto 3 would have been possible on the Playstation? or Super Nintendo? of course not.

new types of technology always, *ALWAYS* means new types of gaming experiences, regardless of the controller interface.

the games we enjoy now (ie, Oblivion, Half Life, Shadow of the Colossus, etc) were only possible due to advances in technology.

we need hardware innovators like Sony(you don't see Microsoft spending 400 million on Cell Processors, and they have the money to do so. Sony doesn't), just as much as we need creative forces like Nintendo.

i'm just saying it needs to be recognized that Nintendo isn't the only creative force, or the be all, end all of creativity in gaming.

it'd be like saying Michaelangelo is the only great artist in history. it's silly talk.

I agree with some of you statements, Like Nintendo isn't the core ingenuity powerhouse of the entire gaming industry, They got a lot of good ideas, but they aren't the only ones.
However I disagree with your statement of them being bland for the last 20 years or so. Claiming they lack new ideas, by using Mario sequels as an example. Can you honestly claim that, Luigi's mansion was a similar game to Mario 64? Can you claim that Paper Mario was an uncreative idea because Mario sunshine already existed? They are wrapped in the same familiar graphics theme, and feel of their predecessors, but they are not at all the same game. You can't call their ideas unoriginal just because the representation of their ideas are the same. The gameplay is whats important.
Plus I find Nintendo's place in the graphics market understandable, since their main goal is to make a profit. Sony, and microsoft(I like microsoft, not so crazy about sony) currently exist in the market place, because they have other departments which can keep their products going. Not entirely certain if microsoft is still in that funk considering the amount of downloadable content they have. But that is how microsoft entered the market, and that is currently sony's predicament with the ps3. Even though both of those consoles look good, they are already starting to become obsolete in comparison to PC's.
Nintendo will bump up graphics when it becomes profitable, but that doesn't mean their product isn't a 6 year old piece of crap. It's processing power is only a little stronger then the x-box this is true, but they have always made their products efficient, not to mention the new design consumes 5 times less energy then the gamecube processor. I am more then confident it could handle, games like like, oblivion and colossus. Even half-life 2 who's only innovation was that they brought physics into the world. The actual representation of the graphics in say oblivion would not be as pretty. By the way if you have ever played morrowind you would realize that oblivion is the same game with the ability to load yourself across the world.
Ehh my rant was a little disconnected, but I hope I made my point. Nintendo deserves a lot more credit then to be called hype.
