SharpRemember those blue laser diodes that have been at the heart of the current feud between the Xbox 360 and the PS3? It seems that another player's entered the fray, as Sharp Corporations announces that it has started commercial production of blue laser diodes.

The diodes, needed for DVDs running in either Blu-ray or HD DVD format, were under production since November at 150,000 units a month in their factory in Western Japan, relayed Sharp spokesman Hiroshi Takenami. From this initial production run, Sharp plans to up the figure to 500,000 units per months by the end of 2007.

Sharp, according to the business paper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, is expected to make annual sales of ¥ 5 billion  (USD $ 127.2 million) for the diode's initial stage.

Given that both the 360 (HD DVD) and the PS3 (Blu-Ray) are dependent on these diodes, we'll just have to wait and see what effects this announcement will have for Sony and Microsoft, especially in, light of the PS3's production run.

 » Finally

Let's just hope that blu-ray diodes were the only limiting factor in Ps3 production.

 » not quite

$ony is intentionally limiting the supply of PS3s to increase demand. More blue laser diodes will not improve the situation until the "embargo" is lifted by $ony. They'll do whatever tricks they can think of since they finally realize they will probably come in last this generation.

 » Sure they are

Juts like how Microsoft was limiting the release of the Xbox360 during the first 4 months of launch, just to increase demand.

The PS3 will definitely come in last this gen. I used to be a huge Playstation fan, and when Sony announced the PSP i thought "I can't wait". Then they announced that the PSP would be capable of running home-brew applications. "Even better" I thought, "people will release emulators so i can play my favourite retro games while im out and about." Then they released it. I couldn't get one. by the time i did get one, they had already wiped out the home-brew situation. $hit. My one reason for getting a PSP and they take it away. I still love my PS2 for my FF and MGS games, but that's all i play on it. Sony have gone down the ***** pan and the price of the PS3 is gonna drag em don even more

I bought one of the first million PSPs in the US with 1.5 firmware and have never updated, even with the downgraders that came out since. You do know if you have a firmware of 2.71 or less and no T082 motherboard you can downgrade to 1.5 which allows unrestricted homebrew. If you still want one I'm sure you can find one on ebay.

» Devs never really caught on with PSP

i bought PSP without looking into the games that it would have in the next year. So far ive bought maybe 5 games none of which were really that great. however my list of possible PS3 games is around 40 strong and thats not going past 2007. I DO have a launch PS3 and i feel that there will be many good games coming out. however for 360 theres about 6 games in its entire elapsed lifetime that i would purchase if i were to get one and that is simply not enough over a one year period.

Well the PSP isn't totally down and out just yet. They've actually released more good games for it in like the last 3 months then they have like the entire life of the system, and with a new Ratchet and Clank coming to PSP it's no where near dead. Of course it can't beat DS, but it's not going as bad as people make it out to be.

Also PS3 homebrew will be a lot harder to shut down since it will be running on a totally seperate OS which Sony is allowing completely. There are tons of great titles coming out PS3. Also with the PS3 the PSP is looking even better with what you can and will be able to do with it.

The fact that once the hotspot connectivety starts up I can take Tivo shows put them on my PSP and PS3 then swap them out anywhere there is Wifi when im on the go with my PSP is great. Then there are the games and the PSX games on the PSP now, which will have many titles in the future. It's not anywhere near as dead as you say it is.

» HD DVD doesnt need a blue diode!

it still uses the red laser so unless you're thinking of a different part you've been misled

 » Wrong

Both Blue-ray and HD DVD uses blue lasers because its smaller.

I think you need to go back to wikipedia.

   Re: umm, i forget (Unregistered) - 2006-12-21
 » That's crazy

since they both use blue lasers why doesn't M$ give up on HD DVD since Blu Ray is obviously better (speaking in terms of capacity)
