The PS2 or PSP don't have their own Virtual console Wii-Style or Xbox Live Arcade to download games from, but the availability of retro games for the PSP has just taken a leap with the announcement of Sega Genesis Collection for both the PS2 and the PSP. This is another one of those popular re-release packages that will contain 30 classic titles from your youth in one pack.

As 1UP correctly stated, "the collection is not only a terrific snapshot of what gaming was 15 years ago, but an opportunity for a whole new generation of gamers to experience the titles that once defined Sega as one of gaming's most revered publishers". These are some of the games that I grew up with, and I can't wait to play them again!

Some of the younger gamers out there may not remember some of the games, but will recognise popular franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Glodex Axe, Columns and Ecco the Dolphin - the game which I could never complete. Sega have said that the games will be reproduced (or to use a word which is slightly more fitting, 'ported') with "the utmost accuracy to the originals as possible" by developer Backbone Entertainment. Also, the PSP version will allow wireless multiplayer for several of the games, giving 2.7+ firmware PSP owners the chance to see what they are missing out on with wonderful emulators like DGEN.

Sega Genesis Collection will be available this fall. Here's the full list of titles: Alex Kidd - The Enchanted Castle, Altered Beast, Bonanza Bros, Columns, Comix Zone, Decap Attack, Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco: The Tides of Time, Ecco Jr, Eternal Champions, Flicky, Gain Ground, Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Golden Axe III, Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III, Phantasy Star IV, Ristar, Shadow Dancer: Secret of Shinobi, Shinobi III, Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Super Thunderblade, Sword of Vermillion, Vectorman, Vectorman 2, Virtua Fighter 2.

I must admit, I don't know half of them; but for the other half, it's probably the best UMD purchase you'd make.

Make new games, stop bringing up old ones. We got emulators for that!

Buy a game or else PSP will sink as fast as Dreamcast did. I am sure McDonalds can use some help.

this maybe suprise for u 2 but street fighter are actually capcom games O.o omg shocking isnt it and also not all people that have psp can use emulators so this probly will be awesome for those that never use emulator and still want some classic games.

 » Great Games

Ecco 1, Jr
Altered Beast
Golden Axe 1, 2, 3
Phantasy Stars 2, 3, 4
Virtua Fighter 2

These are great games (better than Capcom collection), and of course like some of you said, it's a pity that Streets of Rage 1, 2, 3 (Especially 2) is not in the list.

Sonic 3 should be in there!!! Oh well, Sonic Mega Collection should be available for the PSP, I hope. I'm going to buy this, it's way better than the Capcom collection IMO. Yes, there are emulators, but I bet this comes with special features for each game.

» VF 2 for Genesis sucked

Why are they pushing it so hard like it WAS something good? It was but for Sega SATURN and ARCADE. Not the Genesis, I wish they'd stop putting Virtua Fighter 2 on Genesis collection. Come out with a Saturn hits and include Virtua Fighter 2 on that instead!

 » Emulator Rebuttal

This is possibly one of Sony's 'brilliant' ideas to combat emulators.

I own the games I emulate, but that wouldn't stop me from buying the legit collection. As good as some emulators are, I prefer the real thing (except when they screw it up).

 » Quit complaining

That is actually a pretty tight list of titles. Namco should look at that be be 100% ashamed of their "Namco Collections"

So it doens't have EVERY Sega game you want. You're getting a helluva lot more than most developers would opt for

 » Sony's rebuttal

Maybe it is a Sony response to homebrewed emulators, or perhaps they reason that many people want a PSP to play emulated games on, and it may not be possible to do that on newer PSPs, so this is Sony's solution.

But if that is Sony's response to homebrew, then I will respond back to Sony by downloading all those games and playing then on DGEN for PSP. 1.5 forever!

Seriously, though, I almost feel sorry for Sony when they depend on the sell of games to make profits in the PSP department. Just kidding! If the PSP dies I will just wait for Microsoft to make an Xbox portable which would be better and hopefully have better homebrew support (hackable or open).

 » yeay

The reason they dont include alot of games on there is because they will probably come out with volume 2

Where are Virtual Fighter, Road Rage and Splatterhouse

   by jessman (Unregistered) - 2006-08-10
» A lot of games missing here...

Where's Warsong, Streets of Rage, and Shining Force? This is bogus. Plus, it should be for the DS, because the PSP already has these games emulated! What more do we need?

Honestly Phantasy Star 2/4 and both Sonics woulda sold the UMD for me. Thankfully I have PSPGenesis for those titles tho... but my brothers can stick to this collection!

 » Genesis is Megadrive, Right

hi,
the Genesis is the Megadrive. Psp updates should carry both names. Its only called the Genesis in USA and Canada. Not Europe, Asia and Japan.
Still, I hope we this over in Europe (and UK) cos the megadrive was the first console i ever owned.
If you could load Roms from MEM stick it would be perfect. But that probably wouldn't happen, would it.

They could always release this and for the PSP version, they could possibly add downloadable games which get downloaded on the memory stick, and show up on the games list when you play that UMD.

Likewise Shame Sonic 3 or Knuckles arn't on there, but they should have also added Phantasy Star one onto that collection. And Knuckles Chaotix, even though that was 32X.

one thing about sega which i find annoying is that they've rereleased sonic 1,2 etc so many times on so many platforms which is great but everyone has played them,

i don't know why they don't rerelease some of their quality saturn games most notably panzer dragoon saga, best game sega ever made and one of the best games period.

decap attack what a great game used to be one of my favourites and has one of the best game endings ever

Streets of Rage?? They were one of their best titles! Ever!

Why does this site have non-gamers reporting gaming news? This fool admits not knowing half of those Genesis games listed, and not being able to even finish Sonic 1 or "Glodex Axe" (it's Golden Axe you moron!).

That's just pitiful.

This site sucks. Fast with news, yes. Innacurate and inept, YES.
