Scientists fearing amphibians mass extinction due to parasitic fungus - Image 1Scientists now fear that the largest species mass extinction since the dinosaurs will likely happen in our time and among the most endangered are amphibians including frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, and caecilians.

Aside from that, this may also prove deadly for humans as the scientific community is treating the amphibians as some sort of an early warning device. To take the analogy further, amphibians are like coal mines' canaries which are good indicators if there's something wrong.

According to reports, the reason of this mass extinction is the parasitic fungus amphibian chytrid which can't be controlled yet in the wild. It was also mentioned that global warming is not at all helping the amphibians in their battle against this.

The Amphibian Conservation Action Plan or ACAP is now spearheading the international campaign to save the amphibians and to find ways on how to stop the fungus. Initial studies said that 80% of the amphibian's population in any given area are immediately wiped out once the fungus takes hold.

One of the biggest initiative is the creation of the "Amphibian's Ark" project which aims to relocate the most vulnerable species to protected areas in zoos, aquariums and other institutions around the world. The project's estimated cost is around US$ 59.47 million.
