PS3 - Image 1

Earlier, we reported that the 60GB PlayStation 3, recipient of the highly-lauded US$ 100 price cut, is pretty much going to be phased out, with Sony just waiting for current stocks to disappear from store shelves. Now, in a rather surprising turn of events, we find out that even though Sony Computer Entertainment America stepped in to deny the phasing-out of the US$ 499 SKU, Kaz Hirai himself has just now confirmed that the 60GB PS3 will indeed be done away with.

Confused? Don't be. Here's what's happened so far: David Reeves of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) commented that the US$ 100 markdown in the 60GB SKU's price tag is merely SCEA's plan to clear store shelves of any remaining SKU of that memory capacity.

Once supplies have run out due to the sudden increase of demand, the only remaining SKU available will be the 80GB PlayStation 3, which is pretty much back to square one for potential Sony buyers(US$ 599). SCEA, upon finding out about David Reeves' statement, thoroughly denies it in their PlayStation US blog.

As we announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August and a 60GB PS3 available now for US$ 499. We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.

Reading SCEA's statement (actually Senior Director of Corporate Communications' Dave Karraker's), they're saying that they'll have ample supplies to meet the needs of consumers in the foreseeable future. So that would mean no drastic shortages in, say, a year or two?

That also pretty much denies anything about a phase-out of the $499 model, right? Now here's Kaz Hirai himself, his statement taken from an interview video from Scandinavian website VGTV.

[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the U.S., we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two. We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the US$ 600 SKU.

How do you like them apples? Kaz pretty much confirmed what David Reeves said in E3, as well as disproving Dave Karraker. Certainly confusing news, coming from the different departments of Sony itself - but with Kaz Hirai confirming it, this pretty much means that the US$ 599 price tag will be making its return as the only choice of Sony fans.

We'll be here to update on you on developments regarding this somewhat-mixup between SCEA, SCEE and Kaz. In the meantime, you can check out the video by clicking on the source link below.

Well... seems like europe isn't going to see the 60gig for long and North America will... that's what I gathered.

If they really ditch the 60 gig then this would be the biggest pile of ***** to come from Sony since saying that a Gran Turismo title would be on time.

Say f*ck you sony, and get a 360 instead. The PS3 will be dead in a few months. There isn't even any games.

Does that mean there will be a mad dash to buy up PS3s since the $499 price tag is for a limited time?

well they do have about another 3.7 million 60gb ps3's on the market so it might be.

 » Classic $ony!

Sony loves to get those sales records. This is their latest trick to do it! Their too cheap to permanently lower the price, so why not try to boost sales without actually giving anything away cheaper?

Hurry while supplies last! If you don't run up to your local PS3 retailer and get a 60gb PS3 for only $499, you will have to get the "ripoff edition" that costs $100 more and has no emotion engine chip for backward compatibilty and only has 20gb more hard drive! Act now to our special bait and switch scam! We're so clever at sony!

 » maybe...

sony knows what they are doing. Im pretty sure they read the playstation blog and many many people have been saying the same thing.

Is it possible that after the 60gb units are depleted, Sony will announce a "second" price cut for the 80gb ($500) without Motorstorm?

That is what I would personally do at least.

   Re: BumblebeeTuna (Unregistered) - 2007-07-13
 » I concur

This is the logical next step. I see the 80GB being announced as having rumble included with Motorstorm as a limited time package. After the holidays it wouldn't be a shocker if the Motorstorm bundled disappeared leaving only an 80GB at $500. Sony can't afford to keep making mistakes at this point. Their customers won't stand for it.

PS3 fans are pretty f*cking stupid. I'm suprised you all aren't like "Wow sony is giving us 20 more gb of hard drive for only $100 more, which since it's not optional is so much better than the 360! I'm going to remove it anyway and replace it with a 200gb hard drive I will only use 10% of, but wow thanks sony!

 » losing patience with sony

Not only does the right hand not know what the left hand is doing at sony, but just when you think they're getting the message and getting competive with pricing they do something like the bait and switch to generate a short term sales spike to brag about.

Now you'll see them say "look, our PS3 sales doubled for the past 2 weeks" or some crap.

This comany is getting really sad, especially Peter Dille's desperate attacks on the 360 which sound more like a political campaign.

 » Ok

Can you please stop whining like a small school girl. This is obviously a rumor. I mean SCEE and SCEA are two different departments of the company. And Since one is contradicting the other basically saying there wont be a phasing out of any yet.

However this may be Sony's plan, first they have like 3.5 million consoles of the 60GB right. And im guessing it wont be completely gone til near or after Christmas. By then the 80GB could be 200 less and be better selling structure. If this is true. But since we have no idea don't take it as fact. This is my take on it though. So don't take it as true either.

here is what im confused about. I had purchased the 60gb ps3 at best buy, i got the 2yr warranty. if a plan to exchange my ps3 later on the year will i get a 80gb ps3? if the 60gb is out of store shelfs, that means most likely ill get a new 80gb.
the only put down will be the lack of emotion engine will be out of the ps3. what do u guys think.

» Better for Sony, better for us

Well, they are right, people don't respond well to 2 SKUs and having one is the right choice, but having one with a good price is what's good. After they run out of the 60GB units, the 80GB will drop the MotorStorm bundle, and the price will lower, close to, or even to the 60GB unit price. This means that Sony will sell all their 60GB, and then lower the price of their 80GB so they can sell those units, but the 80GB will still be supported. I guess you just gotta think of it in the long run. There are lots of supplies, and what's the matter, why shouldn't you buy a PlayStation 3 after this? It's not like just because your PlayStation 3 unit is discontinued, you shouldn't buy it. I still have a 20GB PlayStation 3.

   Re: christian (Unregistered) - 2007-07-14

I agree totally. Assuming that is the plan, Sony would be in far better shape than this report suggests.

   Re: Zakker (Unregistered) - 2007-07-14
» re: Better for Sony, better for us

Technically Sony is already selling a discounted 80GB, if you consider the extra 20gigs and the included Motorstorm game. If you get all that for only $599, the cost of the eventual standalone 80GB should be fairly reasonable.

   Re: Hellraiser (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » stop being a tool

Sony does this s*it to get short term sales records they can boast about to make it seem the PS3 is doing well when it's not. This also lets them sell without really lowering the price any. You could get a 20gb PS3 for $499. Now you just get free Wi-fi, 40gb, and a memory card reader, which maybe costs sony $10 more to add. Now they stop production of the cheaper model. What a load of crap.

Looks like MGS4 will go multiplatform after all.

I think you are oversimplifying it, but if that's what you believe, why don't you stop whining and go buy a 60GB now?

 » Totally confused

I'm trying to decide now between the 360 and the PS3 and the double talk coming from both camps has me more than a little confused. Sony says they are dropping proces and coming out with more game choices then they say no were really just discontinueing that model. Microsoft says we are not having problems, yes we are and we are putting back 1.3 billion to cover it. We are also changing chip sets to cool the units down (in a round about way) then comes notification of a Class action law suit in Florida regarding 360's that scratch the game disks. Oh yeah and in between this MS has said we are not lowering prices then yes we are then no were not again. I can see a long drawn out process before I make a purchase from either.

Re: Helpful Fool (Unregistered) - 2007-07-14
 » Totally confused, really?

What's there to be confused about, really? The PS3 DID get a price cut, there will be at least some million units available before that SKU goes out of stock. Nothing is stopping you from making use of that cut and buying a PS3 now, or next week, or the week after.

Meaning: if you wanted one, you'd get one. Do you want a PS3?

Xbox360, nothing to be confused about, either. If you buy one now, you KNOW it is defective by design, your chance of seeing the Red Ring of Death (TM) is around 33% over the course of the first year alone (probably going up after that). The Elite version has the _same_ flaws, the new, supposedly more solid motherboard designs are nowhere near shipping dates.

Meaning: Your choice is between a noisier console that WILL BREAK sooner or later and/or scratch your game disks, at 399$ or 479%, depending on which SKU or colour you prefer, or another console that is damn silent, has none of those problems WHATSOEVER, has the better games coming up (if you can wait until next year, that is), and comes at either 499$ or 599$ (including a 59$ game).

If it were me, that's not a hard choice at all. I already picked my favourite, of course.

All I can say is: PS3 is coming HOME.

Re: Mr. Sensible (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » STFU "helpful" fool

If you get a 360 in the near future, it's not going to scratch discs. I've never had it happen, nor has anyone I know. That lawsuit filed by the guy looking to make 5 million dollars (a large part of it going between him and his lawyer) hasn't even achieved class action status.

STOP LYING ABOUT 360 FAILURES! IT'S SICKINING! EVEN IF IT BREAKS, IT'S TAKEN CARE OF! THE 360 IS NOT NOISY! IT DOES NOT SCRATCH DISCS! SHUT THE FU*K UP LIAR!
   by okami (Unregistered) - 2007-07-14
 » your point is?

I really don't see how this could effect someone's decision to buy a PS3, especially at its current price. Even if this story is true, the price is $499 right now, so what are you complaining about?
