SCEA and Nielsen signs deal to track PS3 usage - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment America just signed a deal with Nielsen Media Research to determine the effectiveness of in-game advertising. Aside from that, SCEA also wants the research company to know the usual habits of PlayStation owners while playing video games.

One representative from Nielsen Karen Gyimesi explained that they will accomplish this by tapping into their 12,000-household U.S. National People Meter, which is also being used when determining TV ratings statistics. Gyimesi shared:

We're already in homes across the country measuring TVs. We know when they're playing a videogame on a console. But now we're going to be able to pinpoint what games they're playing, who in the home is playing that game and how long they're interacting with it.

In exchange for providing Sony with the much-needed numbers, Nielsen will get a share of game network traffic and other data from PlayStation 3 consoles, PlayStation Network, and the upcoming PlayStation Home. Gyimesi also added that when this turns out fine, they will have their sights on both online and mobile gaming next.

Nielsen's interest in video games began last year as it announced GamePlay Metrics. The service will be launched this July and will be used to rank video game statistics.

Do you ever have anything better to do than talk sh*t on a PS3 bases website?
Seriously...if you hate the PS3 so much why the heck are you on here?
Go talk sh*t on some place else...you really bother me.

Do I sense a complex?

Well Done SONY! Another reason why I hate you and your console. PS3 users pay $$ for a game then you make more money by forcing them to view advertisments. Tut tut sony!

And they're the first company to do this, are they?
Google, MS never spy on people, or do they?

MS dont spy on my 360... ? Sony will have a company spy on your PS3 and BLUR-ray

 » Not just consoles

It's not just consoles I'm talking about.

Google Desktop Search is a notorious spyware tool, and Microsoft's WGA tool invades your privacy as well. People have had problems and lost money due to WGA errors plenty of times.
Besides, at any given time while you're online, your friends can see what you're doing. That should show you how easy it is for Sony, MS or Nintendo to obtain information from their clients at any time. Who guarantees you that MS will never sell information they can easily obtain from XBL to advertisers?

Having said that, this kind of stuff (invasion of privacy) is the main reason that people should ALWAYS carefully read the terms of use of anything they buy.

No need to hate anyone of these companies in particular, just BE CAREFUL with what they sell you.

 » Typical system use:

This spyware system is not needed! It's not hard to figure out how the typical PS3 system is used.

90% system off, collecting dust. Dust attractant finish, very good function.

2% playing Motorstorm with newly released patch to add tracks and modes to make it the complete game it should have been.

1% playing Resistance

1% web browsing to try to defend it on online forums such as qj from constant attack from Mister Common Sense, Xman, and others who try to talk sense into fanboys. Somehow the real MCS inspired a fake MCS to continue his work.

6% folding protein.

 » your a joke

fanboys talking sense into fanboys?? Impossible, you can't talk sense just *****.

   Re: LMAO (Unregistered) - 2007-07-03
 » LMAO

Just another ****** 14 yr old that tries to be cool. Go do something..... like work instead of wasting countless number off hours surfing qj or playing ur gamesystem. NO one wants u here

   Re: Thabor (Unregistered) - 2007-07-03
 » Real usage..

66% folding protein while we sleep and work, since our system can be left on without bricking it.

10% watching high def movies

15% playing Motorstorm, Resistance, Virtua fighter, Super Star Dust HD, Gripshift, Super Rub A Dub, etc..

7% download and playing FREE content like Ninja Gaiden DEMO and Dynasty Warriors : Gundam DEMO.

2% using remote play from the PSP while watching TV.

Which is much better than XBOX 360:

50% Turned off so it won't burn out.

40% Shipping back an forth to Microsoft to get it fixed.

10% Playing Gears and Forza.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-03
 » ? Thabor ?

Yay! you leave your PS3 on "just because you can?" Do you pay the electric bill? 400W for nothing sure is expensive. So is cancer cured yet? How is that progress going? What? No Progress? Then why the hell are you doing it?

You complain about how much XBOX live costs, yet you pay how much for electricity for waste that has yeilded no benefits to date!

My 360 gets 1-4 hours use per day for the last 15 months and 95% of the time my XBOX is on it's playing one of my 10 games, and the rest it's downloading a free demo, expansion pack, or arcade game off live. It's a game console, and all I need it to do. MS doesn't spy on me too.

 » Common Sense

So thats Common Sense then? Anything that hasn't solved yes won't ever be, there is no reason to try, and helping other people is garbage., at least that is what you seem to think

Why do I do it? I foot the bill myself. I can. It may help someone other than myself. And if cancer research has been advanced even a little more than it was a few years ago I might not have lost a friend to it.

I use my console almost 100% of the time for the past 8 months. You use yours 4-17% of the time for 15 months. Seems to me I've already gotten more use out of my console than you. You rip the PS3 for collecting dust 90%, when your system is doing the same from 83-96% of the time, maybe you're just jealous of the high gloss finish.

And by the way, I didn't complain about the cost of Live. You complained about the free content on PSN. Maybe you're just jealous because you're paying a subscription for your "free" content.

Don't get me wrong, 360 isn't a bad console it is just a badly made console. If MicroSoft would fix the issue instead of trying patching it up with a little glue I might even own one. As things stand now though I'm grateful I didn't buy it when I wanted too.

You so busy crying over what Sony did to you in the past that you don't realize Microsoft and Nintendo and every other large company is exactly the same.
