Smaller Cell/RSX PlayStation 3s to release in August? - Image 1

Word has it that the Sony PlayStation 3 is bound to get a slimmer, cooler, and possibly cheaper SKU by fall of 2008, and many believe it to be a direct cause of shrinking the CELL BE and RSX chips used on Sony's next generation console.

We've heard that a Japanese financial company sees that Sony's about to break even real soon - a signal that Sony Japan often attributed in its quarterly performance reports to incorporating the 65-nm chips for the PS3.

Nikko Citigroup Securities, the firm in question, also states that it expects to see more price cuts for the current PS3 SKUs in the near future, as preparations for a newer model is in the air - something Nikko Citigroup describes as "the new model which is reduced."

This, of course, can be thrown into the rumor bin as well, but then the company's report that "PS3 signs of a turnaround in sales came" (roughly translated) also expects that the new model is likely to hit by November 2008 if it's not prepped ready to wow the world in August.

Back in February, rumors from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) whistled to the tune of a slimmer PlayStation 3. That was met with plenty of skepticism: it was unlikely that Sony was to release a major revision of its next generation console way too early in its lifetime.

Others do not believe that 65-nm versions of chips would necessarily mean a smaller PlayStation 3 - unless Sony was willing to go all the way to sanction a total system overhaul.

 » Holidays are coming

With the next holiday season gearing up in manufacturing centers worldwide, this would be a good idea for Sony. If there is going to be an actually "upgrade" to the system in the next year, other than a new HD and some changed BT/WiFi cards, august-october would be the best time to get it out. I would expect to see a high dollar contract signed for advert. if they did do a redesign.

I've been hearing rumors about this, and a new wii out for holidays as well(now that worlwide demand is almost equal to production), we'll see what happens.

I would actually be surprised if it followed the other "slim" offerings of the past. I don't think they've gotten enough of a tech boost yet to force the form size for most of the pcb's to fit inside a smaller package. I also don't see them releasing a 3rd model later on to make an even more slim version. So we'll see, guessing it'll be a less power hungry version this year, slim by next holiday(2009).

 » lol, yeah right

Just after the new model bundled with MGS4? Yeah right. The "slim" won't pop before half of 2009, this rumor is so fake it's not even a possible thing.

Well if you can 'slim' it down and shave off a few hundred off the production cost AND drop the price with still making profit then there is no downfall to changing the model.

 » Decision

I want to get the MGS4 Bundle when it comes out but I don't know if I want to for the holidays to see if a slimmer ps3 sku will be out. This really affected my decision. I hate when things like this pop-up when I already have my decision made and some thing similar or worth better better comes out or is rumored.

I wonder if it will have the new bluetooth version, blue ray version, and if it be compatible with ps1/ps2 gave via emulator or E.E.
