Debug firmware running on a retail PS3 unit - Image 1News on the PlayStation 3 hacking front: gamer XVISTAMAN2005 has found a way to install debug firmware on his PlayStation 3. Can this mean a foothold on breaking through the PS3's defenses?

Maybe, maybe not. First of all, we have yet to hear solid confirmation on this. Secondly, even the initial report states that the debug firmware was only "partially" installed.

Debug options were clearly found on the XMB, but none of them work. It seems that going into debug mode also causes Blu-ray movie functionality to cease. This can be fixed by updating the firmware though. At any rate, we don't recommend that you try it as you will have to take the risks involved in tampering with your console's hardware.

Thanks to Jare for the tip!

That website should be renamed PS3PHAILED.

"Debug options were clearly found on the XMB, but none of them work."

LOL @ that quote
What's the point of having a Debug option if it doesn't work in the first place?

I agree. smells like fake for me, but let's just wait it develops. Probably it will be revealed that it is fake, but you never know...

And also big LOL for the quote. So we have a debug FW without any debug functions. Great!!!
uhh, wait... What's the *****ing point?!?!

saved me the energy to say that thanks, really, the only thing that id want to see is a link saying: click hear to download the debug firmware or sumthin like that

 » fake?

may i ask how is it fake? If you goto the link it shows you how to do it.. I honestly don't care because i purchase my games and homebrew gets boring after a while , but this has some proof as you can do it yourself just click on the link.

Anyone can write a guide and post screenshots taken on a debug unit. Nobody has proven anything about this yet, and the fact that there's no video of it in action is good evidence that nobody has actually TRIED it yet.

 » because

1. It's from PS3HAX
2. The picture looks photoshopped
2.1. The perspective just isnt right especially on the top 4 settings
2.2. The focus also doesnt seem right
3. The large symbol on the left is the network update symbol, which means he would be in a sub-category of network update, wouldn't he?
4. I believe if there were real debug options, they would most likely not be integrated neatly into the xmb but rather in a kind of "console window" or something

Ok, could be mistkaken on any of these points but for me, thats proof enough that thats just some n00bish troll's, who needs to getalife, work.

 » Keeping it real

Although I have never used that phrase in real life, "Keeping it real" I do believe it is the best possible short description. Ok, now for my point.

I completely want homebrew / hacks / crashes etc. to be found or created on the PS3. The longer before any of these things make it out there the longer the piracy of videogames will cease to affect the sales of great games and decisions about development costs on future ps3 games.

Go on, argue that you have the right to do what you want on the ps3. I don't care about that. I care that all possible income from the ps3 continues to push developers to put in time and money into the next games to be released. I don't want the developer to sit around thinking about different ways they can stop people from pirating their specific game or have to account for loss of sales due to piracy.

Due yourself a favor - and every other ps3 owner - and buy the games you love, forget about piracy on the ps3 so that the games you play next year aren't a fraction of what they would have been.

Thanks for reading,
A fellow gamer.

 » piracy

keeps everything in line. Without a rebellion the powers that be take over and destroy moral code. Just like communism! Nothing is out of order, and everything is in place for a reason. So if you dont believe in piracy, you dont believe in God. Period.

PS3-QUAX .NET STRIKES AGAIN!....

 » yup

ps3hax stole this from ps3news anyways

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

This is the same garbage info you'll find on PS3News.com. Those people are worthless as well. They have a dev unit that can play backups...big deal! That doesn't do anyone any good. They claim to have a distributed app that's 99.99% ready for release that will help them bust the PS3 wide open.....THAT'S BEEN 4 MONTHS AGO!!!!!

They, and most of these people, are full of CRAP! They have nothing.

Sony could easily lock down (or lock out) a dev and test unit. Converting your retail over to either of these would be foolish to say the very least!

I'd like to give a shout out to PS3News.com..... the user PS3News specifically....THAT GUY IS AN A-HOLE!!!!! That no good POS likes to treat people like CRAP. Then when they reply...WTH? What's your problem? BAM!!!! They disappear. But, that of course doesn't stop people from signing up with a different email address. You'll notice a few things on that site:

1. Anyone who comments outside of what PS3News believes, the comment is removed. Thus, hardly anyone comments over there. Those that comment a LOT and even received high votes are told to quit commenting.

2. You would have noticed that PS3News consistently gets voted DOWN on his comments (since he's hated so much and does nothing but talk sh1t) that he has REMOVED the voting system. He must have lost too much sleep over it. Keep in mind, only REGISTERED users could vote.

3. They keep releasing BREAKING NEWS articles yet take a look at what they actually have. They have a dev unit that can play backups. That's it! They discovered this LATE YEAR. They have nothing...nothing but a TON of ADs that I'm sure people keep clicking on and making them tons O money.

Hum... they're also in violation of their Google ADs agreement. I wonder what Google would think about that....let's find out!

Ah..... that felt good!!! All their BS is why I switched to QJ for PS3 news.
