David Amor, co-founder of Relentless Software, recently spoke with
Develop Online for his take on the current issues that gaming is facing
today. One of them is the PS3-Xbox 360 duel, which he believes
to be a challenging ordeal for Microsoft. The Xbox creators may be up
in sales right now, but the PS3 still has one huge ace up its sleeve -
the fact that it's PlayStation.“My feeling is the PlayStation, as a brand, remains enormous. That’s something that Microsoft is going to have a problem with," Amor said. "PlayStation means video games, and it’s a cool brand, so I wouldn’t underestimate how much this works in Sony’s favor. It’s a great machine, it’s a powerful one, and it has a lot of potential." Amor acknowledged though, that Microsoft has come far in terms of endorsing itself as a gaming company despite the Windows image. Amor explains: I think that the Xbox 360 has reached a lot of people that it was always going to reach – core gamers – and outside of that key demographic is a lot of people look upon Microsoft as the company behind Windows and Office. They’re clearly going after the wider market with their Natal technology, but it will take great games to draw them in. People bought a Wii for Wii Sports, not for the Wiimote. do you realize how many PS3 units have to be sold, and how many 360 units MS has to NOT sell per week for PS3 to catch up at this point? PS3 would need back to back system sellers every month, and MS would have to release nothing
but anyways idk if at this point that PS is more a game brand in peopels mind than Xbox... MS has clearly established itself, and everyone recognises it as a gaming platform now..

Well you have to "realize", that business don't project there entire assets, by a annual basis. They project over 10-20 years. They don't think of terms one month, 1 year, businesses think BIG, not small like you are doing.
Most likely they are right Xbox has hit a certain saturation with the market. Where as PS3 has not since it has always been at a higher price point. So when the PS3 does drop you are suddenly entering another market. To which PS3 has not competed before.
Then you will have benchmarking games coming out over the years where they improve upon the quality of games. Then you enter another market the "ewwww" and "awwww" market I like to call them.
So there are alot of untapped markets for the PS3 brand, where as for Xbox there are not.

In the overall video game market Playstation is crushing Xbox.
The playstation brand is not just PS3...it's the PS2's that are still selling and it's also PSP...
You are on crack if you think that the xbox brand is ANYWHERE near as recognized as Playstation....or as succesful...

The guys a biased idiot, granted playstation is more widely known as a brandname. Yet Microsoft have gone from being laughed at for their big black brick, to the second biggest market leader eclipsing playstation this generation (upto now...) and theres no sign playstation will catch up anytime soon.
Xbox is now synonymous with gaming just as much as playstation now and his comment:
"They’re clearly going after the wider market with their Natal technology, but it will take great games to draw them in. "
Sony have the same issue with their motion controller tech, i guess Amor believes his *****ty quiz games will give sony the edge in these types of games.

its funny how you say this. why is it that experts not fans of the economic system say that the PS3 will overtake the 360 in a few years which it will.
One pricecut and a slim and change a lot for the PS3.

....all bets are off. Microsoft will be up a creek without a paddle (even if they further reduce the price). Let's look for a moment at just how BIG the "Playstation" brand name is: What system *continues* to sell and sell and sell --even amidst the Wii? PS2. In the last couple of years (if I recall correctly) PS2 was often outselling even both PS3 and 360 in some markets. Heck, it's *still* a viable system and contender for sales! ---How many Xbox 1's have sold lately? Zero? ---How many Gamecubes have sold lately? Zero? ...well I think there in a nutshell is the crux of Microsoft's problem: the Playstation *brand* is no small force to reckon with. Beyond that, Microsoft may have established itself as a worthy gaming competitor. However, that company's name is MUD in the eyes of MANY average, everyday users (the very market they need to sell to in order to hit those Wii- or PS2- type numbers). The bottom line is that Sony's brand-name will also inspire more TRUST long-term than Microsoft. Heck, forget 'market perceptions'; one needs look no further than how they squeezed themselves into the current-gen market: with a premature design that reportedly had a 33% failure rate, and may *still* have higher-than-normal issues. That whole fiasco may have been forgotten by 'gaming diehards' once Microsoft upped-the-warranty to cover that problem. But, there's a lot of the wider market who are going to be cautious of Microsoft (at the start, because of Windows), and research 360 only to find out all of that nonsense ....and *they* won't be so tolerable, as all the 360 fanboys have been who've bought the system 5x over every time it breaks.

You have to take an overall look - Microsoft has Xbox 360, Sony has PSP, PS2 and PS3, so the brand is arguably a lot stronger.
That's not to say that Microsoft hasn't gained ground, but they lost a LOT of money with the original Xbox just to a toe-hold. Seems to have done them some good this generation though.
I think it's good to have healthy competition. If only MS could make their hardware reliable (I own Sony and MS consoles and build quality is noticably better on Sony) then MS might be able to pull ahead, especially if they can take the Japanese market and lock down some big name exclusives.

I hate it when MS ***** and moan saying they can't get people to go over to the 360 well hear this MS people CAN'T not during this *****ty recession!! But if some people can wait save and buy a PS3 then they wont have to worry about paying online fee's. That's one reason MS should think about getting rig of the $50 a year thing and just put ads in XBL which I don't mind.

the "huge ace" is not the fact that it is playstation, because then it would have already outsold the 360. I think MS will have a problem though, once the ps3 gets a price drop and gets some rpgs released on the system. And the Team Ico game.

The PS3 is still more expensive than the original RRP of the 20GB 360, yet it reached 20 million sales quicker than the 360. Things are slowing now, but only because of the rumors of a price drop and a slim model due out later this year.
I remember around this time last year (just after E3), people were saying that the PS3 was dying in Japan and the 360 outsold it for about 6 consecutive weeks. What happened was that people were waiting for the 80GB (and 160GB) model to hit the shelves, then people went out and bought them in droves, where it outsold the Wii and the PSP for a few weeks, then settled at around 20k-30k per week until earlier this year. Sure the Japanese market is different to the EU/US but a look at global sales will reveal a picture which many are not seeing.
Another thing is that I've never heard people say that they will get a 360 when they drop the price but I hear a lot of people say that about the PS3.

As i said up there, the Playstation brand is not just PS3...it's PS2 and PSP as well and has way more market penetration than Xbox does.
I have an LG phone, yet the Icon for "Games" is a playstation controller.....because more people recognize that as synonymous with video games......this is what the article is talking about, not just sales.

i told u so back when ps3 first came out that it would eventually dominate. second, he does say that playstation as a brand will sell more than 360, but as a brand it has already owned 360. i think that in the next 2-3 years peoples interest will be mainly focused on wii and ps3. lets face it people 360 has no good exclusive and once ps3 cuts the price its all over. hell, i know tons of people that are itching for the ps3 price cut so they can buy one. we have all started to see the change. 360 was dominant its first year when it was the only next gen console, but now every website, every blog, everywhere u look there is talk of new stuff coming out for ps3, ps3 this, ps3 that. sony gives users quality. customers like to buy ***** that will last more than 2 months and will bring them limitless entertainment. hell after e3 many 360 owner went out to trade it 4 ps3. just wait till ffv13 n 13 release in japan that will be a big slap for M$

at the americans on this site that go on about how the 360 is whipping the PS3!
Only in America, in the rest of the world, the 360 and PS3 are neck and neck!
and then they don't like the fact that MS also use the reconditioned 360's they use for the warranty(RRoD) as part of their sales figures!
the Playstation brand is not going to curl up and die, its too big for that, but Sony do need to market their current products better now to keep the brand where it is!

» Playstation = Mercedes
I walk into a Mercedes dealer and they guy proceeds to tell me to buy a one because of the badge alone. That might have worked in the past...but Lexus and Infiniti is nothing to be scoffed at.
Unfortunately, a name alone won't solve anything....if it would....the PS3 woud have already dominated over the 360.
IMO, Xbox can now be considered a legacy. Master Chief rivals anything that Sony or Nintendo has up their sleeve. Look around at current media. The 360 CLEARLY dominates in the environment in popular media. Very rarely do I see people wielding PS2/PS3 controllers.

» If Playstation is a Mercedes
Then Xbox is nothing but a Mustang with a super charger. Where the mustang may be fast, and fun to drive, but you're going to end up fixing it at some point. I would compare the Playstation maybe to that of Lexus rather than Mercedes anyway. I'll reserve the Mercedes title for if Apple makes a console.
PS3 = Nissan GTR
Xbox= Ford Mustang
