New Xbox bricked after 20 minutes of play - Image 1It was a bad day for Andru Edwards from PlayFeed. After getting a replacement for his bricked Xbox 360 console, his new one got the Red Rings of Doom after 20 minutes of play. He claims that the new console was manufactured on August 15 of this year, which suggests that the new line of consoles may still be having problems dealing with the red ring problem.

Edwards' first Xbox 360 got the red rings and he received a brand new replacement about three weeks later. After playing the Fatal Inertia demo for 10 minutes, Edwards moved on to Stranglehold where the new 360 froze in the opening sequence. When he manually reset the console, the red rings appeared.

Edwards expressed his dissatisfaction with Microsoft's service. He even cited an interview with Peter Moore who addressed the issue during E3. The question Moore was presented with was: " [...] Are you guaranteeing or insuring that the systems that are rolling off the assembly lines now and the systems that will be returned to consumers will be fixed properly this time?" Moore answered, saying:

Yeah. I mean, nothing is perfect, guys. [...] I can't guarantee everyone in the world that we go fix one thing and then something else [won't] happen. No I'd be stupid to make that guarantee. But I feel very, very good about the quality of hardware now. You guys know this, every day in the factories where we are building these and where we are learning more about it. [...] You're constantly tweaking, moving parts around, you’re renegotiating with suppliers because your goal is to continuously raise the quality of the box, and bring the price down.

Edwards also posted some pictures to back up his claim that the new console he received was indeed manufactured on August. Click on the image to enlarge.

» Same thing happened to me

Same thing happened to me. Just called them yesterday and have to send it in again. In fact they cancelled my xbox live account because my console was broken and I wasn't able to correct my credit card info. I lost EVERYTHING. Acheivements, saved games, Games that I bought from the arcade etc. Now i'm sitting here with a new gamertag wondering if I should play anything and basically give up on my old account, or pray that they help me out. I have been asking for weeks and they keep saying to watch my email. I've never heard of them reinstating an account and I have a feeling they wont.

   Re: qw (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31
 » ROFL, no

If you recover your account on your new 360, it will be a Silver account now that your Gold subscription has expired. Then all you do is put in a new CC number and pay for Gold, and bam, you have all your Achievements and can re-download any of your old arcade games.

In fact, your account doesn't even need to be a Gold to do that, just recover it as a Silver and you get back all your points and you can still download your games again. Whoever at MS told you to "watch your email" to have our account reinstated is retarded.

 » qw is wrong

Cartman86 if you still have your old hard drive you still have your old gamer tag but you have to wait for microsoft to send you the points to re-download all of you live games and you have to do it with the new tag you made on the new console and if takes over a month(trust me i had to do it)

   Re: Cartman86 (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01
» Don't think i'm in the same boat.

That will not help. Recovering the gamertag won't do anything. They cancelled the account. Silver wont work, nothing will. I can't enter new credit card information in either. Even if I didn't have my old harddrive shouldn't I still have my old gamertag? You just recover it on the new hard drive. Do it all the time with friends accounts and mine on their consoles. The only thing I can think of them doing would be to give me the points to buy back my arcade games, but even then maybe they won't because they act like since i didn't pay for a couple months I automatically lose everything.

   Re: qw (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01
 » No dude

XBL Silver accounts are NEVER canceled, they are always there. Why don't you recover the account to see if it works, before deciding without doing anything that it doesn't? I'm telling you, since I've done it, as have many others, it will recover as a Silver account and then you simply put a new number on it.

   Re: Cartman86 (Unregistered) - 2007-09-02
 » Nope.

I've tried it many times. When I login it gives me an error and tells me to change my credit card settings or something similar. I go and try to change them. The new card number entered won't change over. I go online and change it manually. Delete the old credit card etc and when I login same error. I proceed to check what credit card is being used or enter a new one through the 360. Try to do anything related to buying a gold account basically and it gives me a new error number. One which HAS NO RESULTS ONLINE. Just to point out again. Even if its reverted to silver now I can't access it as such. It updates my acheivements but I can't access the store and I can't look at my friends list. Microsoft HAS canceled my account for good. I have seen this problem at other sites.

 » Is this really necessary?

Moore gave the right answer, he was correct, the quality of the hardware HAS improved. It was pointless citing that interview, because Moore was right, not wrong. Obviously, it doesn't matter what you fix, you can never get the defect rate to absolute 0%. No electronic product in history has had a 0% defect rate. Some people are still going to get bad apples.

I saw a thread (with pics as proof) on another forum, that a guy's Wii died two minutes after plugging it in. That didn't make news (not on any serious site at least, but we all know QJ isn't a serious news site), so this shouldn't have either.

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31
 » ...

i agree a 0% failure rate is impossible but a 30% failure rate is simply unacceptable. The 360 can have a lower failure rate but Microsoft refuses to allot resources to fix them and instead directs them towards warranties and repairs.

   Re: ' (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31
» ^ That is incorrect mohaas

It has been proven that MS has fixed the issue which caused overheating, all newly manufactured units have the GPU heatsink fix applied. But like I said, some units will still be bad, so long as the defect rate is above 0% people are going to get defective units. There's no two ways about it.

Now, I can see if it was proven that the defect rate is still has high as ever, even with the fix applied for the new units, THAT would be news. But one guy getting a bad unit that was manufactured recently is not news.

   Re: whybother (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31
 » O'rly

actually your wrong the quality has not improved at all every system is included under the 3 year warrenty. it ot like MS every system built before this date has the defect it every single one built today even the Elites have the same problem. i agree no system will have zero but there is no need to give a 3 year warrenty unless you know every system will eventually crash within 1 or 2 years.

» In response to whybother about Warranties

If you ever work in business on a management level, you'll come to find out warranties are actually more deceptive than you give them credit for. The majority of companies calculate the expected average life of a given product, and add one half standard deviation or so to the life span to get a lifespan X. They then set the warranty expiration date to this number X, or in other words, just before they expect the average unit to start failing. Longer warranty periods generally (but not always) reflect a companies confidence in the durability of their product.

No HDMI, It's not a new board or "Recently" manufactured 360. It's a refurb with a new sticker on it. End of Story.

Re: Epic Win (Unregistered) - 2007-08-31
 » I just noticed that

All the new units have HDMI built in, so this unit was not built on 8/15. Here's a post from that site which backs up the "refurbished unit" thing:

"The MFR Date is what decides your warranty. When you get a refurb, they don%u2019t give you a sticker from 06 that would be a year older than your console you just bought. Instead they give you a new MFR date so your three years are reset.

It doesn%u2019t necessarily mean it was actually built on the assembly line on that date.

It%u2019s still bad that your console crapped out. But they probably didn%u2019t send you a new unit. That%u2019s a refurb. It probably takes longer than that to ship the units over here from China.

Either way, Microsoft should stress test their refurbs before sending them out. It%u2019s ridiculous that this would happen to you after just getting it back. Either that or you live in the desert and play your 360 in the sun with sand blowing in it."

End of story really, this unit was not made on 8/15 or else it would've had HDMI.

This story is no lost its shock value a long time ago. It's not a big secret that MS has in fact made a poorly designed console. If your itching to get a 360 then wait for the ones with the new chip that is suppose to run cooler (but thats not comforting either)
Kudos to MS as they did shell out 1 billion dollars to try and fix the issue but its more of a band aid rather than a complete fix. What I personally think MS should do is give us the consumers information like when would be the best time to go out and get a 360, then again why would they?!? I am very surprised that there had been no lawsuit in regards to the RROD as I am sure there just a number of lawyers licking their chops to get a piece of MS.

that what i said laughing at every one else. it going to hit you at the most iinconvenient time maybe during halo 3 or Mass Effect. Most owners who usually play around 3 hours wont see any problems but if you play over 6 hours like me even just for one day your 360 starts to go.

   Re: andrewsqual (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01
 » Oh

it never happened me. I was waiting for someone to say it. This is what somebody high up at Valve said in Jan about the PS3
"I%u2019d say, even at this late date, they should cancel it and do a %u201Cdo over.%u201D Just say, %u201CThis was a horrible disaster and we%u2019re sorry and we%u2019re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.%u201D
Its funny because it should have been directed at Microsoft about the 360 instead.

 » Not Really

I can't guarantee everyone in the world that we go fix one thing and then something else [won't] happen.

They didnt 'fix' the 360's it was just repaired. People need to know the difference between fix and repair. The difference between the two is that fix means to ensure that the product wont break down (i.e car) and to repair means to temporary restore something to it orginal state. There is a major difference. So people get it right.

I just want to point out that this screenshot does not show if there is HDMI under the AV port or not. After checking the actual article, the system does not have the HDMI under the AV so he didn't get a Zephyr system so even if it wasn't bogus (even though it is), it's his fault for not getting the Zephyr model... My buddy's system was running flawlessly until it crashed a couple days ago. Froze up and then on reboot went right to the red rings. Service was hard to get in touch with and when he did, they gave him bandaid solutions to get it up and running again.

They worked but the next day the system froze up again and died. This is his second system as his first was dead out of the box.

Mine freezes every 20 min. on Gears or Lost Planet.

I'd REALLY like to know when i can send my godawful system back and MAYBE get a new one that won't die. Not too much to ask I don't think.

Luck to all of you who have a flawlessly running system and know that your system can slowly die (like mine) or go the heart attack route (out of the blue).

I don't suppose you'd care to offer statistical evidence to back up your claim? The average accepted rate for the electronic entertainment industry is easily in the 3-4% range, if not higher. I find it highly implausible that the Wii and PS3 experience less than a 1% failure rate.

Not a single August system in sight! Every shipment we get always has those dates in them. And they're all Zephyrs. All though it could be the company hand selecting the shipped units... even if it is a new one, theres a decent change for all electronics to be dead on arrival or break really fast due to an unusual manufacturing error, not one like before where the problem was in all of the consoles.

I've had a 360 since launch, no problems. I have the PS3 and the wii as well. My wii is finally getting some play since Metroid 3 came out. My PS3 is literally sitting there doing nothing. I got Warhawk and its an alright game but it has little depth at all and its way too linear.

My point it, stop trying to find ways to make yourselfs feel better about your consoles. If your a 360 fan, then stop talking to ps3 fans and vice versa cause you guys do not get along at all. This is exactly what the companies want btw, constant fighting between the consumers for loyality so they can collect and all you'll be doing is fighting some dude on a form about which version of the exact same game is better for which console.

You all need to take a break from the internets.
