Ain't that always the case: just as you park your butt in the bus and crank up the volume on your MP3 player, the first thing you hear isn't your head-bangin' tunes, but the head-jarring concerto of jackhammers and car horns outside?

While noise-cancelling tech's becoming commonplace these days, the technology's usually been isolated to earphones.

The NW-S700F series, to be released this November by Sony, uses noise-cancellation technology, but unlike its predecessors, it's not just the earphones with the tech - it's built into the player.

"While Sony has offered noise canceling headphones, this is the first time that we’ve integrated the technology into the player itself," Koba Kobayashi, general manager for personal audio at Sony Electronics, said about this new player.

By making the technology integral to the player, Sony's system actively adjusts the sound to the same quality of its original source, ensuring that any intrusive sounds - like the said jackhammers - are kept to a minimum, without the listener having to pump up the volume. The result? We're looking at a player that's claimed to be capable of cutting down outside noise by an impressive 75%.

The player comes with a 13.5-mm earphone set, with a built-in microphone that's part of the kit's noise cancellation package. Newly developed drivers offer high quality sound, coupled with heavy but crisp bass.

The battery allows for 50 hours non-stop play time and a handy quick-charge feature lets you give it three hours run time from a three-minute charge - perfect for the audiophile on the go. Also included is an FM radio feature with pre-set channels, and the standard selection of equalizer ranges.

Other features include the use of Virtual Phone tech, which allows recorded music to retain the acoustic feel of their original recording site, and a direct encoding mode to allows users to directly record sounds from any player via cable accessory.

Two variants are to be released: the NW-S703F 1GB with 685-song capacity (US$ 169) and the NW-S705F with 2GB with 1,350-song capacity (US$ 199).

The NW-S703F will be available in purple and pink, while the NW-S705Fwill be available in black.
