Quanta's Laptop - Image 1The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has been in full swing as mobile computer manufacturer Quanta, who has promised to create low-cost notebooks for young learners in developing countries, announced that the units will start shipping later this year.

The OLPC is a project that seeks to provide online learning to children worldwide who cannot afford their own computers. Using budget parts and open source software, prices can be brought down to as low as $200 per unit. The machines will run on Linux OS environments and freeware.

These laptops, the OLPC says, are only created and made available for charity purposes in remote locales only. That means there's very little risk of bargain shoppers getting their hands on these. A separate design will be allocated for commercial distribution in the US to give the market affordable notebooks for private use.

The "XO" laptop by Quanta hopes to facilitate the creation of opportunities to bring a better life to the world and take the lead in serving as a model for other computer companies to follow.
