Looks like Nintendo was off on its recent prediction that the PS3's US$ 100 price cut won't make a difference: SCEA head Jack Tretton has announced during Sony's E3 conference that PS3 sales for the 60GB console has doubled at the top five retailers in North America. Like a herald of good news, Amazon's sales figures for the PS3 have risen by 2800% even before E3.

Following this news, Sony hopes to launch 11 million units by the end of the year. Some still express doubts though, saying that this boost in sales may not be for the long term. John Yamamoto of Square Enix, whose monumental Final Fantasy series was feared to move into the Xbox 360 for good, thinks that US$ 500 is still expensive for most gamers. And although Konami was not impressed by the price cut, rumors that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be moving to the Xbox 360 have been dispelled in the recent Sony E3 conference: it will remain a Playstation exclusive.

After the initial price cut, Microsoft started "Project Falcon" which improves the 360's performance and hopefully reduce its price tag as well. How this news will affect the rest of the industry now remains to be seen. Things seem to be turning upside down and inside out and E3 isn't even over yet. Stay tuned for more on E3.

good news are pouring on for Sony.

Now if they can cut the price every couple weeks, they can keep up sales like this, lol.

Like I've been saying (and has been proven numerous times) PS3s only sell well in spikes.

What's the big deal? This is the same price as the 20gb model nobody wanted. So you get 40 more gb of hard drive, Wi-fi, memory card reader, and chrome free. But sony will still let you waste your money on 20 more gb for $100 more. Wow. Generous sony.

I give this 6 weeks before PS3 sales are back to what they were before the price cut. That's if MS doesn't match with one of their own. Anyone want to bet?

Mr comon nothing....

u also forget the 5 free BD movies....with the price of about 150 dollars
so they are not so not generous now...lol

   Re: Hellraiser (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » yay

Don't forget the 5 free movies are some of the worst movies you can find anywhere. If they were DVDs they would have a hard time selling them for $5. But it works great for sony because it clears out warhouses of sh*tty movies they can't sell and counts toward blu ray sales too.

   Re: hahaha (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » yup

nobody wanted the 20GB PS3 cuz there was a 60GB PS3.

Whats the big deal? This is only $20 more than the 360 elite..... u know the machine that MS made WITH HDMI and a bigger HDD that u said nobody needs. how do u swap the laser and DVD drive of the 360 again?

the 5 free movies arent that great.... but they compare to the 5 free HD-DVD movies that come with a toshiba player.....but thats a different topic.

Yeah, not so much. Try their RANK has risen 2800%, not their sales. Brilliant.

isn't rank influenced (or controlled) by the sales of a product?

 » Uhh.. no..

Rank is influenced by sales, but not the same as sales.

IE:
Rank 1 + 33 sales
Rank 2 + 32 sales
Rank 3 + 31 sales
Rank 4 + 30 sales
Rank 5 + 29 sales

If the Rank 5 item had a 20% sales increase it's rank would jump 400%. I hate when idiot fanbois make the rest of us PS3 owners look bad.

It's amusing to see the ways people spin verifiable facts to fit their own agenda. The point of the article is that PS3 sales are better than they've ever been, which according to Amazon's own data is at least twice as much as the 360 over the same statistic time period. Splitting hairs doesn't change that.

   Re: Thabor (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » Splitting hairs?

Do you even have a clue what the statistic time period is for that data? It's something like an hour.

While it is good news for Sony that they were able to take first place for a little while its not groundbreaking news.

It isn't verifiable that they are doing twice as good as Xbox, because Amazon isn't publishing actual sales numbers, just the rankings. If Sony manage's to sustain the sales increase for a significant period they can get happy.

Passing XBox sales up by a few percent for a few hours isn't going to close the gap in installed base. I've got a PS3 and I enjoy it, but unless you're completely ignorant you aren't going to ignore the fact that XBox does have a lead and Sony needs to work hard to overcome it.

I'm hopefull that Sony has another price cut waiting in reserve because a price cut on 360 would torpedo PS3 sales hard. Sony is frankly lucky that MS may have trouble affording a cut right now.

"Do you even have a clue what the statistic time period is for that data? It's something like an hour."

It is updated hourly, and it still hasn't moved since it took the ranking. I never said the PS3 has toppled the 360's total sales to date, and I never said it would be done over night. The point is that the sales are making a notable improvement as a direct result of the price cut. It's just that simple.

how can you determine the rank position using percentage?? are you saying that moving from 10th to 5th in the rank is a 50% increase? think before you post, or not, you may sound as stupid as some ninty's CEO saying "sony can afford a $100 off, but can they afford a $200 off?" - sound really stupid for me!

I'll certainly bet that you are a biased 360 fanboy. Sony haters are getting more predictable and more petty every day. The price goes down, you whine. The system gets bundled with high-definition movies, you whine. The sales increase, and you say there is no sales increase. Where does this hatred come from? Why does it hurt your feelings to see another console making progress? Is it insecurity?

» Silly little boys with there silly little toys...

It doesn't matter how well Sony does or how good the new games are there will always be some childish moron trying to spin a story to suit his/her own agenda. I say let the console speak for itself. We've now witnessed that the PS3 IS the most powerful console, Killzone has just Killed Xbox360, MGS4 has just shown Mister Common Sense what he could only dream of (I bet he has a low wage, which is why he bought cheap and spends all day on QJ) and if Forza 2's the best you've got, don't bother... the graphics are crap compared to GTHD and GT5. I guarantee that MCS will be getting a PS3 in 2008, why? - because he'll 110% want to! MCS and all you other Xbox360 owners will remember my words as you hand over the cash (and the 360 you'll be part-exchanging). Later suckers....

I think PS3 sales will continue to do well, especcially after some of the games that're causing this sales spike are actually.. Well, you know, available. Lol :)
