Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1

Good news, Sony PlayStation 3 owners! The highly-anticipated firmware for your Cell Processor-powered consoles of next-gen awesome has finally gone live, and is now available for download.

For those of us new to this firmware-related malarkey (or if you haven't been keeping up with the news much), then you'll be glad to know that PS3 firmware 2.10 sports a Voice Changer feature that lets you change the tone of a voice that's fed from an input audio device, like a microphone. And yes, it does let you mess with your voice on the fly, even while using voice or video chat.

Audio and video playback have also been improved with this new release, and you would do well to check out the complete changelog in the previous article. The update gives your PS3 support for DivX and VC-1 (WMV) formats. FW 2.10 also bumps up your Blu-ray status to Profile v1.1, which will eventually pave the way for web-enabled Blu-ray content.

Now get to downloading!

 » Woah looks nice!

But I wish it was like the PSP, when you click the PS button it would stay in the background instead of going back to your wallpaper.

 » Did you notice...

If you organize your videos/games into albums by pressing square, the icons continue to animate now? They fixed it since the previous firmware. Before, my movies and games were static when I organized them (annoying).

 » updates

the webbrowser seems slightly updated
divx works great, I just tested some "borrowed" movies in avi container and it was a success.
I have'nt tried wmv or xvid yet though... good update so far

 » I have a problemmm...

My message board icon is gone.... is transparent now.. I can click it like always but the icon is gone.. I'm the only one or what?

About the browser... now they use your ps3 wallpaper as the browser background too.. not the blue one and I like it...

 » Yup

Now, all we need is a newer flash update and the web browser will be set for a while.

 » WMV Works Great!

Downloaded some WMV files from Gametrailers.com! Fantastic! This is one feature I have been hoping for for a long time. Now only if we had updated flash support and cut and paste function in the web browser.

» Divx doesn't work at all!!!!

I upgrade the firmware thinkin f*ck ya! now i get to watch all my anime on my ps3 instead of the computer....WRONG!!!
i went to www.stage6.com which is dedicated to DIVX ONLY videos and it didn't play ***** that i downloaded from there!!!

   by L0d1z - 2007-12-17
 » hmm

I just watched fist of the north star and that worked... the ps3 has some problems with some media that is'nt named correctly, it does'nt like spaces in names although sometimes it does'nt matter.. odd. It seems like it does'nt matter what you name it, all that matters is what name it had originally ( when it was made ) or so it seems. Sony should fix that it's annoying.
I went to joox.com ( a stage6 site ) and downloaded a .divx file and it played fine.

awesome stuff.. why was'nt mentioned in the chagelog?

   Re: TurboRob - 2007-12-17
 » visualisation...

Yeah , lol .. but then we should expect this... coz if ya think about it most of the time after a firmware update ... there's apost titled " Hidden Changed in X.XX Firmware". So there should be a few more finds later on 2night!!

I have 2 PS3's updating to 2.10 now, w00t.

   by Koolaidsred1 - 2007-12-18
 » maybe ps3 version difference?

Well it seems some ps3's can play the videos and some cant maybe this has to do with what version you have? All my avi files and divx files have worked great for me so far and I'm using an original 60 gb.

   by OnimushaGTA - 2007-12-18
 » So...

So does it work ? cause i waiting for homebrew on the PS3 before updating so , keep me posted :D

   Re: TracerTong - 2007-12-18
 » Why wait...

The PS3 hasn't been cracked yet, also no version of the FW is 'safe' to stay at like the PSP and 1.5

I'd just update your PS3 and wait. It's all you can do for now.
I'm doing mine when I get in from work tonight

   Re: Karuto - 2007-12-18
 » Yeah...

Especially with the fact that only over a year from when it was first released, you're seeing custom firmware for the PSP released days after the official firmware. I wouldn't be surprised to see the PS3 doing the same thing.

I'm waiting until I get a BluRay burner before I consider waiting to update. +]

   Re: Koolaidsred1 - 2007-12-18
 » just update

Believe me just start updating. IF/WHEN it ever gets hacked it will be far from now and they will most likely try to find a hole in a newer firmware rather then a firmware that nobody has. Its like now the 360 can run Linux on 1 of there really old firmwares but i can guarantee you no more then 1 person(the person who developed it) is using it. Same with the ps3 ust update and I'm sure when they find a hole in the firmware they will crack ti before Sony releases another update.

» Why Qj didn't talk about divx/wma compatibility?

Anyway, divx is a GREAT thing to add, I'll make full use of that (yes, no more converting for my movies :D)

 » Ugh...

None of mine seem to work, and I used my iPod to try a divx video. I used TVersity, and the same video worked. I don't know what the problem is. I keep getting an error (80028801), which means there's an error with the format of the video. TVersity contradicts that statement. I'm upset. :(

 » PSN

I updated and everything is all good except now i cant log into the Playstation network

   by rebeli0s - 2007-12-18
 » 2gb?

so i was just looking at the official manual for the ps3, and it states that the divx and wmv players only support videos less than 2gb, im wondering how they can think this is sufficient for someone who wants to watch hi quality movies that are 3 gigs each

   by Dark246 - 2007-12-18
 » PSN Working

Nevermind, the PSN is now working

   by Eclipze_ - 2007-12-19
» divx is working for me

go to joox.net and you can find and download stuff there.
While its downloading tho you cant go into chats or do anything because it'll stop the download for some reason, so do it at night or somthing when your not doing anything. But once you got it downloaded it works and looks great.

   by Datnizzle - 2007-12-19
 » works

It plays my DVD's with 5-6 "backed-up" movies. And with Nero home I can now ff and rr all those movies on my pc harddrive, with no conversion at all.
