Paramount Pictures - Image 1And so the glass ceiling breaks. Just when everybody thought that Blu-Ray has finally won over the battle, a bomb drops in the form of two of biggest producers and distributors of filmed entertainment, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation. The two major outfits have announced today that they will be supporting the HD DVD format - exclusively.

From their press release circulating the internet, they revealed that the decision "resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs." Titles like "Blades of Glory",  "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third" will be debuting in your home entertainment centers very soon via HD DVD.

Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, Brad Grey, expounds on their decision:

The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD... Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience. I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount.

The only exception to this whole exclusivity deal would be those films directed by Steven Spielberg. The renowned director's works are not exclusive to either the HD DVD or Blu-ray. Expect Paramount to send out new release day and dates, and catalog titles for your HD DVD viewing pleasure in the coming days.

It looks like the fight isn't over, then. Bring it on! (It's already been buhrought!)

Tip by whoelse, thanks!

» As great as this is...

Umm, this is good seeing as how I love when Sony gets shot down. "Blu ray has already won"...right.....just like Betamax and UMD :p.

anyway though, why is this in the 360 section? If anything this should be in the Ps3 section as its a mandatory blu ray player, and 360 owners have a choice. You need a media.qj.net or something.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-20

Wouldn't it be funny if the HD-DVD promotion group would come out and say HD-DVD takes the victory, kinda like the blu ray association did with blu ray?

Even though technically I have a blu ray player now there's no movies I would pay $25-$35 for and the blockbastard video by my house doesn't stock any yet.

But like I said before, I don't care too much about the format war, I have HD satellite with recorder.

stupidity, why jump over from a large well maintained high capacity cruise ship to a sinking yacht?
bluray prices (production and retail will) be lower once support comes pouring in. these idiot companies are the ones to blame for slow price reductions.
heck why choose format, it is always wiser to support both because your company will profit whichever format the consumer chooses.
and to these companies, i think your market analysts are paid under the table, here in japan there is almost non-existent support for HD-DVD, each and every store in narita (and mostly all over japan) has Bluray layers and movies.

"blockbastard"

LOL. Nice play on words, if not too imaginative. I have a Blockbuster MoviePass. The only reason I have that is because I do see a large number of movies per month and would like to pay a constant amount for that rather than something that varies. Also, with Online renting (like Blockbuster Online or Netflix), you might not get the movies exactly when you need them, like say Friday or Saturday.

By the way, the nearest Blockbuster that keeps Blu-rays is nearly 45 minutes away, and I don't want to go that far for a movie, however hi-def it might be. I do buy Blu-rays though (have to keep my purchases within reason though, what with a kid on the way :)), but I shop around (online and in-stores) and usually am able to get all my Blu-rays from between 20-25 dollars, tax included.

Why do people do this. Why go against whats inevitable. All its doing is keeping both formats expensive by keeping this little war going. No super mass producing untill this crap is over.

 » Doesn't make sense

All major studios are backing Blu Ray except Universal, and now Paramount decide to go HD-DVD? Something seems odd, it's like they want this war to carry on as it means more money spent on films over all. It's unfair that studios are being exclusive, this is films we're talking about not petty games. Unless all companies support one or go Multi, HD is going to be in Trouble.

Ur rite about that. Sonys proved very unpopular with their move to seperate from Toshiba. (C'mon Bluray! U can do it!)

 » dejavu

wow, history really does repeat itself. Back in the day (i know most of you are too young to remember, but) betamax actually had most of the studios. But after a while they started losing them due to the high production costs of bm compared to vhs. And of course, once the adult film industry realized they could sell more using vhs over betamax, they made the switch and cause the whole deck of cards to come tumbling down for betamax.

this is almost the exact same situation. if we see more studios hop over to HD, Bluray could be in some serious trouble in the near future.

im not supporting hddvd or bluray since dvds are cheaper than both and im not THAT big of a movie fan. but considering almost all of sonys formats have failed, im pretty sure this one will be no different. they just need to stop trying to push new formats for all their products and just concentrate on today.

» i'm old enough to remember

i haven't posted on any news not on the PS3 section for months now but i do read all the articles... i felt like posting on this one cause this news just saddens me and not because i have a PS3... i'm a huge movie buff, i barely watch local or cable tv and just watch my collection of movies which is quite big, i watch movies over and over and over... i've got two walk-in closets just for my movie collection.. and this news just prolongs the resolution to these media war... i would gladly buy an HDDVD player if it wins, no problem about that...

i just want one of the formats to die and since Blu Ray has the lead now i wanted it to go for HDDVDs throat already!!!!

   Re: Quixand - 2007-08-20
 » here it is

and i quote:

"None of the participants in this deal are willing to openly disclose just how much money was exchanged, but the L.A. Weekly is reporting it was in the neighborhood of $50 million in "promotional considerations" for Paramount and $100 million for DreamWorks. Is anyone else just disgusted by Microsoft's naked, shameless financial influence in this thing? That Hollywood is a greedy place should be obvious to all by now, if it wasn't already. The HD-DVD format can't win any other way than for Microsoft to PAY studios off to stay exclusive."

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-08-20
 » ...

You make it sound like no other businesses open there wallet to push their product. Sony does the same thing with it's products. Plus the payment made is small considering how much these companies stand to gain for HD movies down the track. Personally I like the format war (damn 'm gonna get flamed for that, lol) because it's forcing prices down quicker. Even if there was one format the players and movies would still be crap anyway. Too expensive. If you want us to use your DRM infested crap atleast make it the same price as DVD, else piss off.

   Re: Vsions (Unregistered) - 2007-08-20
 » I agree

I dont want Bluray to win because of the ps3, I just want to move on to a high def format already and since blueray is in the significant lead it makes sense to go in that direction. Anyone interested in sending a message should look at this link and participate

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t+13878

The console war is one thing I think is good because it brings out the best but a format war only hurts us. We are the consumers and we really do have a collective voice and should use it. on another note I would truly be dissapointed if microsoft had a hand in this. extending this format war hurts their own install base as well. Im not saying sony is innocent of all things but Microsoft has been proven to steal things in the past, begining with windows.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-08-20

Even if there was one format the players and movies SALES would still be crap anyway.

   Re: Quixand - 2007-08-20

it is an industry fact that Microsoft would benefit if the format war isn't resolved soon... the longer it goes the longer the standard will be set... they are paving their way for movie downloads which they are pushing.

   Re: Advertising -

   Re: Vsions (Unregistered) - 2007-08-20
 » double edged sword

I can see your point Quixand, but would that not be a threat towards microsoft as well since sony is headed in that direction as well?

   Re: Quixand - 2007-08-20
 » i know Vsions

but i read somewhere (in a couple of articles) that Microsoft wants to delay the format wars as long as possible to cement the full transition to downloads... having a new standard media format will hinder that... saying even that the primary reason why Microsoft backed HDDVD is to delay the format war and that's it... that the gain they will get from hindering a new standard media format will be greater than if either format wins even if it's the HDDVD.

and among all the players in this format war, primarily Toshiba and Sony, it is only Microsoft who would benefit from the delay due to mentioned reasons... the other two companies has a lot riding on this that's why they want to win this war so even if Sony is heading in the direction that Microsoft has already taken (downloads) they can ill afford to lose out to HDDVD.

i'm actually trying to look for the link for the article on this... i'll put it on here when i find one.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-21
 » .

I think there are 3 main reasons HD movie players aren't taking off.

1. Prices are still too high for players and movies.
2. The format war has many people on the fence and many movies aren't available in both formats.
3. DVD just came out around 7 years ago and many people aren't ready to upgrade yet. VHS was around for over 20 years before DVD.

As for me I don't care too much either. If a movie I really like comes out I may buy it, but I don't buy many movies anyway. I like DVDs priced $5-$10 myself.

"I like DVDs priced $5-$10 myself."
That's the price range I wish for as well - almost never happens though. And I like movies (and TV shows like Monk, Simpsons, Futurama, 24, etc) a bit too much to hold off until they fall THAT much in price.

» it is the matter of corporate greed.

if one format win, their dvd sale decline as time pass.
moving over to another format when that format seems to have won is to prolong dvd sales.
a move to hd-dvd means dvd can survive that much longer like from its suppose period.

if the components of hd-dvd are lower priced than the bluray ones at this time, imagine how much lower wil it be in the future. I mean, you can get a hd-dvd player for 200 bucks, there is even a 100 dollar player planned but the cheapest blu-ray player costs 400-450 bucks. if they both can handle a 1080p picture... do you really care about 15 gig extra?

This is great news for HD DVD after being outsold by Blu Ray 2:1 all year. With potential exclusives such as Transformers and Shrek the Third, HD may close the gap over the holiday season.

I believe the deciding factor in the format 'war' will be when one of the current exclusive supporters goes neutral. If Fox and/or Disney go neutral it will be a massive blow for Blu Ray, if Universal goes neutral it will be almost over for HD DVD.

The amount of bluray players compared to hd-dvd is like 5 to 1. Going with HD-DVD is a waste of time. So now HD-DVD has 3 companies and Bluray has like 40.

Get 50 to 100 mill from M$ or Toshiba or whoever paid it. Make a big announcement and some advertiesement (rough costs of about 10 mill). And after 2-3 months, I would declare HD DVD as failed and jump back to BD.

They never made an easy 40 mill like that before...
