Michael Pachter - Image 1Despite the woes that are plaguing the world markets, the video game industry is "likely to weather a recession quite well." This is according to everyone's favorite analyst, Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter.

Pachter says that during a recession, people would actually spend more time in leisure and entertainment activity. Only, people would shift from expensive forms of entertainment to cheap ones. Which is only logical, really.

Following that line of thinking, Pachter continues saying that video gaming is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment, especially if you already have a console in your home. And besides, a recession won't stop the extremely hardcore from buying a game. Pachter even says that:

We believe that some portion of console households may be lower income [...] but believe that even these households are likely to continue purchasing software, as they most likely contain a self-indulgent, hardcore gamer.

... "self-indulgent, hardcore gamer"? ... He confuses me. Is he for gamers or against them? Anyway, he had a lot to say about video gaming and recessions, but when it comes right down to it, he believes that the video game industry won't suffer much:

We end up concluding that video games are about as susceptible to a recession as the average of all consumer purchases, so we expect a 'haircut' of 5 percent this holiday.

 » I disagree

I don't think that a higher Unemployment rate is going to be good for gaming.

There will be some exceptions in the video game industry. I'm sure people will still buy Rock Band, Guitar Hero, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, God of War, etc.

People will STILL BUY the exciting hyped games, but I'm sure they will be a lot more conscious in their video game purchases. They will NOT risk their money in unreviewed games, for example.

So I believe the recession will have a BIG impact on the video game industry. It won't destroy, but it may permanently change it.

And this is the first recession where video games were this big, so we will just have to wait and see what the hell happens.

Sucks to spend $60 on a full tank instead of a new game. oh well, thats life for ya.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Well, it's sad to say but I agree.

It's sad because:

1. Pachter is a douche and now I'm forced to agree with him.

2. Those mostly hurt by current issues are low income families to begin with and low income families are a minority in the gaming world. Or rather, didn't buy much to begin with. So:

A. They already have their consoles and buying a game here and there wont matter much to them even now and they will continue to do so.

B. They don't have a console anyway and never attributed to sales figures as it is.

Now before some jackass jumps in and attempts to rape me over my uses of "low income" and tries to turn it into some "poor people" remark, I'm reffering to those that got screwed by the Community Reinvestment Act. Of which they had to be "low income".

 » Video Game Companies

start out with big loans/investments. A Recession can only lead to more "safe" games that are unimaginative and plain.

Investors (which aren't necessarily Gamers) and Publishers will definitely change their way of thinking.

This is what I was talking about. We will see more Maddens and First-person Shooters, and less echochrome and Fl0ws.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

While I agree with that, do you really think there will be less "echochrome and Fl0ws"? Those are $10 titles. The blood line of "low income". I think we'll see more cheaper PSN titles.

So only low income families have lost jobs? Only low income family need to control spending? The worst paying jobs (fast food, trash worker, lawn care, etc) have the best security because they suck! The poor aren't much poorer now then they were before.

This is affecting the MIDDLE CLASS (majority of game buyers), and they will have less money for non essentials.

WOW you really have no clue.

"So only low income families have lost jobs?"

Why do you ask that? I said no such thing. Since you are truly CLUELESS, I'll give you a clue.

"Those mostly hurt"

See the word, "mostly"? Do you know what the hell that means? Gees, look who I'm asking!!!!

"Only low income family need to control spending?"

Again, WTH? I said no such thing.

"The worst paying jobs (fast food, trash worker, lawn care, etc)"

Actually, trash men make damn good money! That's a city job you jackass. But then again, you're so damn ignorant I wouldn't expect you to know such things.

"The poor aren't much poorer now then they were before."
Interesting, even though you total f'ed up most of what I said above, you still came to the same conclusion of half my point. Everyone gets lucky sometime!

"This is affecting the MIDDLE CLASS (majority of game buyers), and they will have less money for non essentials."
Wrong! This is affecting EVERYONE. It's mostly affecting low income.

Look douche bag, I spelled it all out before. The LOW INCOME HOUSING issue affects LOW INCOME people. Even a CHILD can follow along. Why can't you? Low income housing is the worst problem we have right now. That is what is causing these VERY LARGE business to go under. To go even further, jackasses like Obama are to thank for the low income housing crisis. Along with most Democrats in our current Senate.

I'm pretty sure I went WAY OVER your head with all that so I'll understand if you still don't "get it".

"WOW you really have no clue. "
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

unless the video game companies start selling loans, I doubt we'll even see any sign of the recession here.

 » .... I hate to agree

with Prachter so I just won't...... .. . .. . .

BUT I do remember some articles (vidsites and RL news
) during the summer detailing how, because of the high gas prices, there was a lot of people who spent that vacation money (or rather a part of, if they were smart) on home entertainment (tv's, sound, VIDS) along with local'ish travel spending

It wasn't saying people were "Going Games" but did mention that people considered it the financially prudent thing to spend their money on rather than visit Aunt May halfway across the hell and gone spending, spending, spending while the been comin round the mountain when they came... .. . . .. er something...

not gonna site where as it was long ago but it still makes sense to me ... oh damn I just agreed >.

how could it not?

Nothing is essential about video games. Fewer people are buying non essentials because of job uncertainty and whatnot.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Here we go again!!! More ignorance. Tell us, do you own your home? How long have you been paying on it? How long do you have to go? What interest rate?

Only certain types of businesses are in danger.

Not sure where the heck you've been but we've been in the crapper for a few months now. As you can see, current sales are just fine. Now, at this point the "crap" hasn't rolled down hill yet. But at the same time, current sales aren't budging at all. Plenty of REAL financial analysts have already proclaimed how shocked they are that consumer goods have remained strong. The malls are just as full as they've been for a while now.

Take a company like Starbucks. They've been growing like a wild fire! But they can only do that as long as people spend in EXCESS. Well, the excess has slacked off. They were forced to close many stores. But no one was let go. They kept their employees as they expect growth to continue. All those people that are buying ONE cup of coffee instead of TWO, per day are mostly likely STILL going to buy LBP. How's that for one barely related example? HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

IF you could read, I said it will effect the industry. I didn't say it would be disastrous or anything.

By FAILING to comprehend what I said, you did achieve your sad life's goal of having something to argue about.

WELL DONE

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

The industry is made up of businesses.

"Only certain types of businesses are in danger."

My entire post was about the INDUSTRY.

Care to try again? Good Luck!!!
