PSP - Image 1 Firmware 5.0 for the Sony PlayStation Portable is now out and available for downloading. Thanks to all the readers who told us about it. The big thing in FW 5.0 is the addition of direct access to the PlayStation Store.

Also new in this update are a full-size on-screen keyboard, a sleep timer that users can enable during music playback, and the ability to use the PSP Slim's video out feature to display PSOne titles at full screen resolution depending on the TV the Slim is connected to.

QJ.NET reader AshTR also clued us in on the following additions included in the changelog:
  • The system will automatically change to USB mode when a USB cable is connected.
  • The [Original] theme has been redesigned.

 » Lovin' it

I've had official firmware since late August and I haven't looked back! Times are good for PS3-owning, PlayStation Store-using PSP owners who DON'T pirate.

   Re: skoomaeater - 2008-10-15
 » Pirates?

Not all CFW users pirate games. The homebrew community isn't about piracy, it is about choice and preferance. The homebrew community has contributed much to the OFW that you see being released. Sony admitted to investigating why homebrewers do what they do. Custom themes, web browser, wma support, playing games from memory stick (PS store), PS1 Emulation, UMD autoboot option, the list goes on. All of this was done by homebrewers BEFORE Sony. Sony takes a lot of ideas from the homebrew community. Yes, many people pirate games, and it is unfortunate, but don't brand all of us as pirates.

   Re: Neko Kyu - 2008-10-15
 » wat

wow wow wow buddy, i use custom firmware and i never pirate. :/ I dont know about other people but i use my custom firmware for snes emulators, PSP Revolution (DDR Clone) and ill also back up my own LEGALLY owned games and play em off my MS to save power from disk loading.

also i like the option of not having to re download my classic PS One games that i already own, but instead just converting the ones i already have.

   Re: billylee8 - 2008-10-15
 » well obviously

I didn't expect any "pro-OFW" post to be warmly received here, but when you have entire communities dedicated solely to piracy, and people saying "gee golly I'm not updating until DAX hacks the firmware," it gets tiresome.

And no need to lecture me on the contributions from the homebrew scene. I used to run my own ripped WipEout Pulse ISO at 333 MHz, but I couldn't help wonder if the improved frame rate gave me an advantage online. And I'm still upset that I had to resort to illegitimate means to play my legitimately purchased games to their fullest.

I guess I wanted to say that the benefits of having OFW outweighed the benefits of having CFW (that is, when the people who use CFW don't pirate and have a PS3)...

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2008-10-15
 » ....

What benefits are you talking about? Last time I used CFW I had ALL functions of the OFW, too.

   Re: billylee8 - 2008-10-15
 » Benefits of OFW

Being able to use the latest firmware instantly instead of waiting one (or several) weeks for a hacked version. Didn't we have to wait a month for 3.80 M33?

Not having to worry about updates for CFW features I never really cared about, or bugs that never seem to be fixed (I'm looking at you, Castlevania PS1 save icon).

Full use of the PlayStation store. Yes, I'm aware of the "USB Version Fake" plugin, but I read somewhere that one CFW user was unable to access the video store. I probably wouldn't use the video store that much (if at all), but the fact that I LOSE functionality was a deal-breaker for CFW. And that's not even counting the features lost from simply being on an outdated firmware. We already know DAX isn't going to make a CFW for every firmware, and not many people want to trust their PSPs with GEN CFW.

To me, OFW seems simpler, but it's also worry-free and hassle-free. CFW has its perks, but they're no longer appealing.

   Re: blackthorn - 2008-10-15
 » lol

billylee8, I can respect you want to be squeeky clean and play the moral high ground with your decision to support OFW only, but don't cross the border into zealot/fanboy territory and try to talk up the benefits over CFW.

Whether you like it or not, OFW cannot hold a candle to the efficiency and capability of CFW and whilst you might get your new playtoy "instantly instead of waiting one (or several) weeks for a hacked version" - bear in mind that once CFW boffins have created a fantastic new feature in their firmware, you have to wait and wait and wait and hope Sony will replicate it in future versions.

TL;DR version : STFU fanboy and stop trying to convince others of your moral superiority.

Have a nice day.

   Re: Binary - 2008-10-15
 » the fack?

hey now I'm a cfw user but I dont use ISO.

   Re: billylee8 - 2008-10-15
 » Jeez

Bringing up morality, now?

I can OBJECTIVELY say CFW has more features than OFW, and if having more features on an older firmware is more important than having the latest firmware with less features and no worries down the road, then use CFW and be proud.

But you can't deny that a huge reason for having CFW is piracy. Sony does get ideas from the homebrew scene, but when you use CFW, don't fool yourself into thinking that you're "helping to add features to the official firmware" just so you can sleep better at night.
   by billylee8 - 2008-10-15
 » And as for roms...

I had my fair share of roms (which I will totally admit to totally illegally pirating!!!), but then I realized I only really used my PSP for its game and media functions.

In fact I think I was just forcing myself to play my roms, just because I could. I have emulators on my PC, but just because I COULD put them on my PSP, I SHOULD? I would browse through my hilariously large GAME menu and see NesterJ and often convince myself that being able to play Super Mario Bros. 2 was a pretty awesome privilege for CFW users, and then I'd end up playing, even though I never really liked the game THAT much. And sure, those CPS1 and CPS2 emulators ran those games perfectly, but all the times I was out I'd end up using the PSP for what it was for (namely, PSP games and music). I got rid of my largely unused apps and unplayed roms and I ended up freeing over 700 MB on my memory stick!

But my hat's off to folks like Neko Kyu.

I guess you one of those idiots that cares about global warming.

   Re: blackthorn - 2008-10-15
 » Well

This would be because over 80% of the 'official' games for the PSP are utter ***** and not even worth pirating strangely enough.

ROMS actually prolong the longevity of the PSP after you've gotten bored with the official content.

Indeed, many many old school ROMs for other systems emulated on the PSP give a vastly superior gaming experience to some of the absolute ***** devs have served up to get a slice of the PSP market.

Just because you personally might only use it mostly for music and media doesn't really support your theory that CFW is the best option.

Either you're short sighted or a Sony fanboy/staffer in disguise trying to pull some lame reverse psychology stunt.

'Oh the Official Firmware is the way to go guys, upgrade!'

If you think "80%" of PSP games aren't even worth pirating, it sounds like you'd be better off GPX2. Personally, I enjoy the unrestricted access to the PS3 and PlayStation Store.

Dude just to let you know you are a pirate if you download games you don't own. Doesn't matter if you D/L it just to try it out. If you want to TRY it out rent it. Don't try to justify the fact you illegally D/L games. anyways most of the homebrew is not even good enough to keep on my mem stick except for the emulators. I'm not knocking anyone for there hard work on there homebrew projects. Just stating the fact that most homebrew isn't worth trying.

   Re: Dragoon - 2008-10-15

We need a 'Teach me English!' kind of homebrew game. I can't even count how many people could use this game and learn from it in this thread. It's definately a lot, though!

the only reason i use psp recently is pspcomic. i don't even really play games recently on my psp, thanks to homebrew.

too bad it cannot be used on ofw :/

perhaps someday sony will reconsider and push some homebrew into their psn network, as a free download, so that people with ofw can also benefit from some useful apps?

i mean psp cfw is almost a given nowadays and there are lots of useful homwbrew apps.

The new original them looks cool on a PSP 3000, not on the Slim or phat because of the lack of new "colors" but atleast they gave us the feature right?

Looking forward to regarding Trophies, that would be so awesome if you could pop in older titles and get trophies!

Seeing on how most of these comments are about if roms are illegal or if custom firmware is used for piracy, here's a question for all of you.

When the new PSP gets hacked (if), are you going to buy it, or stick with Slim?
I would ask if you phat owners would get the 3000 but if you haven't moved up to Slim yet I don't see why you would.

So my question is, stick with what you got, or get the new model?

   Re: Polansky - 2008-10-15

Well I have a phat and no slim. If i were to upgrade to a Slim or 3000(when it can run cfw) I'd go for the 3000 for sure. But besides cfw I'd still go for the 3000 :P.
