Okay, so it says 2.7something, but we needed a pic for this! - Image 1This was sneaky. Both the QJ and Exophase forums have discovered that Network Update's been picking up a FW 3.30 (yes, that's 3.30) firmware update in the airwaves. Exophase even has a downloadable EBOOT of it. It's not up on PlayStation.com as we write this, though...

(Yes, we know the pic to the right says 2.71. It was either that or the internationally recognized symbol for recycling.)

Which is why there's no full changelog to bring for now. Wait for the update to this when PS.com decides to play catchup, or when one of us bravely decides to sacrifice his or her personal PSP to the all-consuming maw of FW 3.30 to see what's changed (or at least far enough to see the changelog). Or we'll just update this article after the results of that ultimate sacrifice (until they come out with a downgrader...) reveals the changelog.

Otherwise, here's what's known to be the changes in 3.30, so far, via both sources (and we also don't know why they'd skip 3.2x...):

  • display thumbnails under RSS Channel
  • expanded support for PlayStation Network-downloaded PSOne games (but what specific support?)
  • support for displaying thumbnails for files in VIDEO folder (more reason to use a file stealthing device now, ain't it?)
  • option to set Disc-Load speed to Fast or Normal
Downloadable below conveniently comes in a folder named "UPDATE", thus saving you the hassle of having to create that folder on the PSP Memory Stick/PSP/GAME subdirectory.

Update: We had a hard time grabbing this update because the official PlayStation site suddenly became tricky and sneaky as the FW 3.30 itself. In the site's System Update page, details on the new firmware update went up and then it suddenly reverted to February's 3.11 update. We had to refresh our page over and over and when the latest update was on display once more, we immediately took a snapshot of the changelog.

With that jazz out of the way, here's the real deal:

* This update is for those who own PSP units with model number PSP-1001. If you happen to have purchased your handheld outside North America, don't attempt to perform this update at all.
* It is true that video game compatibility has been improved as the list of supported PlayStation Network (PSN) titles has been expanded.
* It is true that thumbnail images of items has been added t o the RSS channel.
* It is also true that thumbnail images of videos stored in the "Video" folder of your memory stick.
* Speaking of which, the following formats are also now playable in the said "Video" folder: MPEG-4/H.264 AVC Main Profile (AVC CABAC) with sizes 720x480, 352x480, and 480x272
* Most importantly, a "Use Wireless Hotspot" feature has been added under Network Settings.

As always, we recommend assessing whether you're ready to download the new firmware or not. You can also try and wait until the loyal homebrew stalwarts have given this a thorough look.

Thanks to Hockeyroks33 and TwistyValhalla for the heads up!

   Re: Kichigai - 2007-03-28
 » Speak For Yourself!

With some DAMN good games coming out soon, including the heavily anticipated Final Fantasies, you know Sony is going to push them to require 3.30. So, we have games there. Then we have improved POPS load speeds. Not too critical for most of my games (FFIX, RPGs, etc.). Then there's the high-res videos, which isn't too new, but we also get CABAC. This means that most H.264 videos on the net will play with NO MODIFICATION AT ALL. Even the iPod can't claim to run CABAC, and I have some 352x288 res videos. CABAC (Main Profile) offers an improved quality-to-bitrate ratio, which means better videos with smaller size. I'm ready for 3.30 OE-A when it's ready. Maybe we can finally play FFVII.

I typically find it amusing when a person incapable of expressing himself in complete sentences labels others as "ignorant". Americans are not dumb, nor are they weak. If either was the case, would we be the best country to live in on the planet? Take your unsubstantiated anti-american bull***** and drown yourself in it.

   Re: fdf (Unregistered) - 2007-03-29
» i really hope you all are not serious

i have lived in europe and usa, europe is fine but not on the same level, everything is old people get paid much lower, World wars really hurt europe much more then it did the usa. But i still like France and Spain Italy etc. Anyways theres a reason why the usa is made of of europeans they got out to come here, anyways to all americans if ou really thik the typical american is stupid an ignorant etc, examine who you are around, the fact the usa has had all major if not all major inventions of the 20 and 21st century surely is not stupid. By the way europe goes from nice standards of living to 3rd world country style, please look at that. I prefer europe becasue i get paid more and usa is a tad more stable. Notice why all french doctors come over here, not all but alot. Same with other parts. Also notice why people from europe and all over the world come to usa hospitals, Colleges, etc ???????
Theres stupid people everywhere theres 305 million + possesions 15 million + illegals 20-40 milllion depending on who you talk to. Thats alot of damn people, Europe is VERY small, and to the member that said they wanted to goto germany, are you serious, out of all of europe i saw that would have to be last. In europe 2,000 usd monthly is considered alot of money ./ raise a family thats 24 k USD - taxes......that is hood life here, atleast not a good place, maybe if both parents made that it would be cool. Thats just one example, In paris building are old, old ***** is expensive blah ......but still great to see by any means.

most of you saying this are prolly young, never been to europe or evne observed what its like. USA has some beautiful cities and weather, i stay in southern usa FL-GA-TX -Puerto rico.

Anyways maybe europe is for you, visit have fun and enjoy life, its short.

This is not meant to put down europe or anything i had great fun there while i was livig there made MANY freinds a few gf's so by any means it was great. This was just my opinion on the whole Economy/Money/Education/Standards of living

anyways shout out to all americans and europeans !!!!!!!

and to the psp scene

America sucks, when I get old enough, I'm moving to a less materialistic country. All anyone cares about here is money. I go to school all day and come home and do homework until I go to sleep extremely late. I don't have enough time to live a healthy lifestyle because of all the schoolwork and because I need more sleep than most people (about 11 hours). Because of school, I am always tired and depressed. The "American Dream" is a bunch of bull*****... they say you can have anything you want if you work hard, but in reality, you must have a lot of money to go to college and make anything of yourself (a high school diploma isn't worth ***** anymore). This country cares more about me making money than having a healthy life, and I find that wrong...

The rough translation from the Japanese site also mentions PSN(playstation network) in the same paragraph, so it's referring to the PS1 emulated games you download, not UMD based games. The UMD has a specific set rotational speed that is maintained in the PSP's hardware.

I think they opened up this possibility for those who create games. not something you can adjust in the XMB. I say that because of an interview I read on here a little while ago with David Jaffe and he said that he wished they could use 333mhz for GoW on PSP. I'm sure sony would cater to his every need considering he is responsible for one of the hottest games around right now.

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-03-28
 » to weqwe

your confusing homebrew with piracy
the two seem to go hand in hand on PSP
but if iso loading was blocked then homebrew (which is user created games and applications) would be a great addition to PSP
however, because of devhook this is unlikely to happen
it is too difficult to enable homebrew without opening up to piracy
and your right. if they did, all the third parties would be on their arse like a hemorrhoid saying "what were you thinking?"
i dont think its impossible to block iso loaders, its just very difficult.

It may be dead to you, but there are many who play their PSPs every day. I have 52 UMD games, and it is the best system I own to date. I'd take a PSP over a Wii, PS3, X360, DS, etc any day...

@John-Jack: Why are you reading the psp news here then? Afraid PSP might get back from the dead coming to hunt you? Hey, as long as it sells it's not dead, stupid...

blame on you SONY!
SONY hasnt got any reason for a crappy update like that!
and the 3.30 isnt a good FW name, it'd be better when they rename this piece of ***** to 3.12! there no special changes!
everything sucks on original FW's!
Whats about the Calendar, Alarmclock and co. functions?
i thought, that SONY want to know what their consumers wanna have! why dont they look ito the official forums, to look after wishes? they werent able to not see this many Threads about the SONY firmware! "noooooo, i'm hagakuri (or what else the sonychef is called), and iiimmmm the big boss and I decide, what we put in the firmware!"
why dont you name the firmware "Attention, it's an official Firmware! The last one's called 3.11 and there werent many changes so THEY name it 3.30!

Argh! I hate you PONY(oups sry i ment shony no *****y err...what else...)!

PS: Sorry when it's hard 2 understand my post, cuz i'm not english and its not quite easy to explain my mind!

 » yeah...

well... yeah, a calendar or an alarmclock would be fun... but most of us out here, if we have a psp, we obviously also have a cellphone... and right now i don't think there's a cellphone without calculator or alarmclock function.

and i do hope u didn't said that seriously about everything is decided by the Sony CEO...

so my opinion is. thx Sony for giving us the awsome hardwere. I won't curse you, you're not perfect, and you do want to save you're prestige infront of the third party companies so they could bring us hell lot of good games. (eg. TestDrive Unlimeted)

And thanks for the hackers, homebrew devs all around the world for adding functions to the gadget, that Sony could not

ps. Ouka_master: get yourself a lua calculator, there are tons of it... or even.. .write one yourself, with an alarmclock

Am I the only one who noticed the full resolution video feature?
Shouldn't that news be on the front page?

Errr....
Why?
DAX has implemented it since 3.03 OE-B
Sony is just trailing behind.
