PlayStation 3 - Image 1Back in the old days, the hand of justice used sophisticated, thousand-dollar computers to crack down on sickos on the internet. Although expensive, it's really a small price to pay to put those freaks behind bars. But thanks to the PS3, all they have to spend now is a few hundred dollars. Find out how.

"Bad guys are encrypting their stuff now, so we need a methodology of hacking on that to try to break passwords," said Claude E. Davenport, an agent in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cyber Crimes Center. "The Playstation 3 - its processing component - is perfect for large-scale library attacks."

Under the Fourth Amendment, suspects cannot be forced to cough up the passwords to their little hobbies. Luckily, with the help of a search warrant and a processing powerhouse, law enforcers are able to sniff out passwords out of a gazillion possible combinations. The agency used to rely on Tableau/Dell server devices amounting to US$ 1,100. As it turns out, the PS3 has just as much computing power, for just US$ 299.

"You take the ability of a single person to throw a few passwords at it a minute to a few million a second," said Neil Condon, vice president of Public Affairs for AccessData Corp, the company that conducts the investigations. He added that any current gen console can be used for the operation, but they're using PS3s because they can install Linux in them. That said, they're definitely using the fat PS3 models.

all the current gen consoles? I doubt the wii has that kind of processing power. 360 is probably up for it though.

 » Wii...

...is not a current gen console. It's technologically last gen.

   Re: Bountyhunter53 - 4 days ago
 » But...

It was released in the same time window as X360 and PS3. So technically its still at the same gen as PS3 and X360. But still can your Wii hunt down pedo's? Can a X360 look after a nuclear stockpile?

The PS3 only does everything :D

Exactly how does cracking passwords help catch a child pornographer or any other kind of criminal?

Re: truk - 4 days ago
 » really?

when someone password encrypts something that usually means they are trying to hide something. you do the math..

» Cell is brilliant for floating point stuff like this

I dare say it would probably even be able to run decryption algorythms rather than just brute force password attacks.

Re: yourmistakes - 4 days ago
 » i'd go one further

and say that with the parallel processing power, it would be ideal for decryption, especially if you used a cluster like this guy:

 » Terrorist love XBOX's

I remember hearing about terrorist buying lots of XBOX's (because at the time $200 game system was just about has powerful as a $1000 computer) and hacking them to turn them into cheap Nuclear missile password crackers or something like that. I guess the US has started thinking more guerrilla in their computer exploits.

   Re: Bountyhunter53 - 3 days ago
 » huh?

Dude where the hell you read that from? And anyways a PS3 already has support for Linux out of the box so I think if I was a terrorist I would go for that. BTW Ive always wanted to say this :D PS3 haters don't read on...

The PS3 only does everything :D

(Damn! Them PS3 ad's are catchy.)

You know if this is true, Sony may put Linux back into PS3 SLIMS, I mean if these law enforcers are using linux on PS3 phats, then if this is really successful, Sony may put linux back in.
