The PS3's launch in Europe has been hailed by Gamestation as a "success", and although eBay sales aren't going down amazingly well at the moment, what Sony's PS3 lacks in auction fever it makes up in curing diseases all over the world. That's right, we aren't talking about a game like Call of Duty - we're talking about the PS3's involvement in curing Alzheimer's disease with Stanford University's Folding@Home project.

You've probably seen our call for PS3 users to unite and join the QJ.Net Folding@Home Team, but basically what it does is use your PS3's idle CPU while investigating protein folding which has been thought to be the root of diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, cystic fibrosis, Huntington's Disease, and some types of cancer. You may ask why we're posting this once again, but this isn't just an appeal to ask you to join.

The PS3 has already made a significant impact on the Folding@Home, with PS3s providing 346 Teraflops of their CPU power, close to triple of what all Windows PCs running the program and 100 more TFLOPs than Windows, Mac, Linux, GPU, and other Operating Systems put together. We would like to thank everyone on the QJ.Net Folding@Home team who have joined since our last post and have helped the PS3 achieve this great feat. QJ's Folding@Home team stats can be viewed here.

Folding@Home statistics - Image 1

So as you can see, the PS3 really is making a difference. You may think that your PS3 won't be responsible for curing a disease, but think about it: your PS3 has over 10 times the TFLOPS (processing power) of the average computer - put it to good use. Who knows, the PS3 could be the thing that cures a disease such as Alzheimer’s once and for all. Even if you don't have a PS3 yet, it's quite cool to know that a console you support is giving something back to the world.

If you have just got a PS3 from Europe or another part of the world and would like to donate your processing power to a good cause, click here to learn more about how to join the QJ.Net Folding@Home team. Even if you don't have your PS3 yet, you can download the Folding@Home application to your PC too, it just won't be as effective as the Cell-powered PS3. But you're still helping.

Who lets his PS3 running while not playing? noone?!

mine has been on for the last 48 hours straight. btw, if no one is running that, then why do the new stats show almost 15,000 ACTIVE clients and over 370 TFLOPS of power? This number will keep increasing with the more PS3's running this program. When we have 40,000 running, that would reach 1 PETAFLOP!!! Btw, out of 2 million PS3's, 40,000 is a small figure...

Left mine on last nite. I already got more WUs done on the ps3 than 1 week of folding on my computer.

 » For Comparision

F@H typically sends 20,000 frame work units to PCs. A PC with the processor faster than that in the xbox 360 takes about 2 days to finish the unit.

F@H is loading up PS3s with 400,000 frame work units, which they easily finish within 8 hours.

Clearly, the Cell is a superior processor. Kiss my ass, MCS, you can't argue with this one.

Stats via Engadget.com, by the way.

I've had my ps3 on since the update. Just finished 2WUs. I still game in between but this is too important.

"A PC with the processor faster than that in the xbox 360 takes about 2 days to finish the unit."

Crow, stop pulling numbers out of your a***. The floating-point power of a typical PC processor is a fraction of that of Cell in the PS3 AND Xenon in the 360

 » - PS3 Vs. X360: Another Aspect -

I’m one Great Japanese who lives in the country called the Great Japan.

To help you understand, I’ll give you a very simple and concise lecture. I’m a young guy who earns about $100 every single hour. I earn $1,500 every two days. So, for me, $1,000 (the cost of the PS3 + taxes + accessories + some more things) is no problem. All those X360 lovers hate PS3s because they can’t afford expensive products from the Great Japan. All PS3s in the Great Japan are constantly sold out; there’re so many rich ppl here. X360 owners are game addicts; and game addicts are poorly educated; so all the game addicts (Xbox 360 buyers) live off minimum wage (about $7 an hour). Like the former president of Sony said, just work more hours to buy a PS3 if you don’t have enough money, immatured guys.

[Easy comparisons between PS3 and X360]

* PS3 can be compared as a very expensive ‘luxury car’.
* X360 is just an average car from ‘GM’ (General Motors).

You can just own a GM car then live your lives for 10 years; no problems. You can go to your workplace and do all sort of things with your little GM car; however, if you want to get more features (airbags, superb tires and all kinds of state-of-the-art electronics), better quality components and better deigned car, you must buy a very expensive luxury car.

All those poor X360 owners say that you don’t need PS3s because the X360 consoles can do so much. That’s completely idiotic. Let me bring up the following example. A cheap GM car can move at the speed of 110 km/h without getting any damage to the components on the car. A very expensive luxury car can go at the speed of 200 km/h without getting any damage to the components. In real life situations, you almost never have any chances to go faster than 110 km/h even if you own a ‘luxury car’ because of many factors such as speed limitation, traffic conditions, et cetera; therefore, poor GM car owners can say that their cheep cars are as good as unnecessarily expensive ‘luxury cars’ because GM cars can do anything the luxury cars can do. I’m rolling on the floor laughing. Laugh my ass off, you little cute westerners. Just because cheap GM cars can do most things which can be done by expensive luxury cars, it doesn’t mean you only have to buy cheap GM cars. If you have more $$$, and can afford better and more advanced cars then go for it.

Every time you little, cute Americans and Europeans purchase our PlayStations, the Great Japan becomes better and richer! I’m all for it!

* Show us your money!

* Make the Great Japan even richer!

* Just send us the $$$ then we will give you little gifts called PlayStation! And then waste away your lives on the machines! You game addicted little, cute Americans and Europeans!

* We Great Japanese love you little westerner customers; because of the free trade, the Great Japan is almost as rich as America which is the richest country in the whole world! Just compare the sizes of both countries, America is 50 times (yes, that’s fifty) bigger than the Great Japan in terms of the area size; and the Great Japan is as rich as the little, cute America!

I am a proud owner of a 60gb PS3, but fanboys like you make me feel ashamed... what the ***** is your problem, go live your *****ing "Japan life" and leave us alone *****.

   Re: Mark (Unregistered) - 2007-03-25
 » what a dumba**

let me start off by quoting you...
"the Great Japan is almost as rich as America which is the richest country in the whole world! ...and the Great Japan is as rich as the little, cute America!"

How does Japan go from ALMOST as rich as America to AS rich as America in one paragraph?

If that post was intended as a joke, you forgot to include the punch line.

stupid little kid, when are you gonna learn the "Great Japan" as you call it isn't really so great. how you sit in front of that computer screen and make complete sentences is beyond me.

Let's take a closer look into the facts. The US's GDP in 2006 was an estimated $13 trillion dollars compared to that of Japan which was a measly $4 trillion. if you don't believe me you can look here https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2001rank.html

I do encourage you to read more about the GREAT AMERICA here: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html#Econ

Your comparison of luxury cars and GM cars to ps3's and 360's is piss-poor at BEST. I bet you thought it was just coincidence that your parents had the same surnames before they married! You're just another Internet-addicted idiot suffering from diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the mind. Now, if you care to apologize for wasting my shamefully wasted time, I'll consider accepting it.

oh and one more thing, the US is only 26x bigger than Japan not 50. as you quoted and requoted here: "America is 50 times (yes, that%u2019s fifty) bigger than the Great Japan"

You have just proved the theory that there is no limit to human stupidity.

to make all the hippies in the world happy lets all buy solar panels and hook up our ps3s to them.

 » TFLOPS

Teraflops is NOT an indicator of the overall performance of a general purpose CPU. It only measures floating point performance (Trillions of Floating Point Operations per Second = TFLOPS). IBM/Sony hasn't to my knowledge released any info on how fast Cell can process other types of data.

Also:

41 TFLOPS for GPUs/697 active units = 58.8 GFLOPS/GPU.
346 TFLOPS for the PS3/14138 active units = 24.5 GFLOPS/Cell CPU.

The average GPU used for F@H is 2.4 times faster than the PS3.
Not trying to say anything here, just a point.

I have yet to do the update on my own PS3, but when I do I'll definitely enable F@H. I've been folding for years, to see it become so easily and publicly accessible is awesome.

   by hush404 - 2007-03-23
 » LMAO OMG!

15,000 PS3's running the software are pumping out over double the tereflops of 1.6 million Windows PC's.

   by Dom (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » ..

GPU in PS3 is used for all the crap you see, nothing is used for number crunching, ssince nV cant seem to get that to work.

   by foxhole99 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-24
 » More TFLOPS

Just because there are 1.6 million PC running the progrom don't mean all are active. Thats just the total of PCs that ran it since they started. But it takes 1050 PCs to run 1 TFLOP on average and only 40 PS3 to run 1 TFLOP. And since the post the number of TFLOPS for PS3 went up over 200 and PCs only went up 1 TFLOP.
