pos3The most skeptical people in the face of the planet (no, I'm not referring to fanboys) are perhaps scientists. Their brains have become adapt at testing and observing things, making them highly critical on all fields. Pleasing one is as hard as convincing a PSPanatic that Ngage is a better handheld. So when the brainiacs of the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory get all excited over PS3's STI Cell Processor, it can only mean one thing - this is the 'machine'.

The said department has claimed that the processor can be the next big thing for scientific computing, adding that their tests showed that the cell's architecture had tremendous potential for scientific computations in terms of performance and power efficiency. Now they never mentioned that their findings translate to a better console overall, but getting nods from them is not very different from Tony Hawk saying you're good with skateboards.

THE STI Cell processor is being tucked inside the tank that is PS3. What really impressed the department was its heterogeneous multi-core implementation which they thought was better suited to the HPC environment than ordinary chips. The cell also takes a radical departure by using identical cooperating commodity processors which have a high performance PowerPC core that controls eight simple SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) cores.

They aren't about to worship it either as they pointed out one minor flaw. The cell works best with 32-bit tasks, but most scientific applications require 64-bit chips. Like I said earlier, although this technology is fused inside the belly of the upcoming PS3, it doesn't necesarily put them atop the other consoles - yet. Still, it won't hurt to assume that PlayStation 3 is slowly unveiling the weapons of a true next-gen console.

It's already been established that the Ps3 is the most powerful console hardwarewise (no fanboy can argue otherwise, it is just plain statisticaly stronger hardware). But this does not at all mean that its better for games, its 100% about the games that come out for it, not the power of the system. Don't argue power, argue upcoming releases.

And this is not directed toward the blog entry, this is directed at the inevitable fanboys that will come in here arguing about how much better the ps3 is than the 360 because of its power.

 » ps3 wins then

sony always gets japanese games, europe games, and american games. nintendo usually sucks on europe and microsoft sucks in japan. overall, ps3 will get the most games. like ps2 got the most games last gen.

You actually believe ANYTHING the Inquirer writes? They don't let others do research, they do the research and pay others to claim it is correct.

There are merits to arguing hardware. I know everyone gets there panties in a bunch when you talk about hardware as opposed to games , but hardware is very important to the games we wish to play.

If for example the cell processor is all it's hyped up to be it means that developers have a lot more power to actualize any of the visions they may have for games. I mean i'm very excited to see how ai will evolve in the coming generation. So far games are looking better in screenshots but, still feeling static and contrived when you actually see them in motion. So i hope this added higher level math processing beast of cell can provide us with some of the more advanced animations driven by actual "intelligence" as opposed to artificial supidity.

 » 'scientists'

haha, i love that. it says all you need to know, it's 'scientists' which means they're that weird group of techy nerd types who think you're an idiot.

cell for 'science' based computing may be a good idea, personally i don't think they'll be using ps3s in thier labs... anyway, computational science is boring as hell.

i do 'science' and i reckon the exciting part of this is that the consumer is able to pick up the high end stuff that 'pros' are going to be using. this article tells you that with ps3 you're really getting cutting edge stuff.

but as we all know, the best console will only be voted 'best' according to it's games, not the specs.

 » Horrah for science, whoo!

From an Computer Engineer's prospective, I can tell you for a fact that people in the fields of science are very hard to please. To call them " that weird group of techy nerd types who think you're an idiot." is an understatment; they're groups of people who know when they are right, and know that you're an idiot.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that this artice has very little to do with the PS3's power as a gaming machine. However, I've always believed in the power of the cell processor's structure, and I'm glad to hear that people in positions of merrit believe so, as well.

the ps2 was supposed to be able to launch nuclear war heads..and was hyped as a super computer....it wasn't...

way to go steriotyping scientests. thats like saying "Scientests are smart because they got us to the moon"

while its true, some scientests DID get us to the moon, not all scientests should gain the title of "Genious" because their job title includes sucess.

im not saying this story is bogus, its absolutely true, just the QJ.net writer is filling it with some spin to make it sound as if this meeting actually ment something. (it wouldent be like tony hawk commenting on your skateboarding, it would be more like a group of other professional skateboarders saying you did a good job.)

*vecha*
lol yah i remember that, sony said it would "Revolutionize the way you play games online forever" and "have movie like graphics" and "Would operate at 3x the hardware specifications (they really said this!)"

it dident do any of those things. i know this, because i bought my PS2 for ALL those reasons. and i was severely disappointed.

so all gamers stop listening to sony, and watch what they DO not what they say.

» The next xbox will have the Cell's architecture

Ms will pay Sony royalties in the future.

I am a computer scientist and I develop financial software. And by looking at what Sony is bringing to the table, they are finally living up to their promises. (not all but some)

I am however very jaded towards Microsoft for abandoning the Xbox and simply hacking away a new version just to be first in this coming generation. Also, their FUD marketing towards the PS3 which they are quite famous for against linux and Macs is dispicable (all those negative PS3 rumors are examples). Just look at Weblogs, (engadget and joystiq) they refuse to post any positive PS3 news on their sites (I send them quite a few weekly for, which they have posted none) is just quite shameful.

that may not be true the main reason why the ps2 got so many games is because every1 has one with a $600 system how many people can you honestly see owning this amazing peice of harware(well at least what we r seing right now) plus if you guy's folloed the link to get to this like i do this would mean that this console might screw you over in the long run as well personaly im not rich and i cannot afford high electricity prices and this system as much as i want it to play killzone 2 and futuristic game that is arround ww2 and for gran truismo 5 the wii is looking to be a much better choice c'mon think about it how many flaws have you heard with the wii? mabee like one and that would be tha wireless controller and it is much cheaper so yeah i guess im going to have to wait to see how well this system that only some1 that *****'s out $100 bills by the second could afford will perform
