UK outfit MCV predicted earlier that the Sony PlayStation 3 might become an integral part of Freeview's advent, and they may be right on as a bit of confirmation was made from New Zealand recently.

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand boss Warwick Light told The Press that the PS3 camp is hoping to seal the deal to carry media from terrestrial broadcasts in order to transform the console into a programmable TV tuner.

"We're (also) hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March) – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder," Light says.

The move has been deemed as a very feasible one in a technical perspective as data input could be channeled from one of the PS3's USB ports and stored in the hard drive.

This leads Light to conclude that their console is an "incredible transformer" because "we (Sony) can transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people's changing entertainment needs."

Light even went far enough to dispute the PS3's classification as a game console. He says "a lot of people think that the PS3 is just a games machine. It's not a games machine. Well (laughs), it is, but it isn't (laughs again). It's a future-proofed super computer."
