White Knight!

In a very eloquent article over at Kotaku, Eliza Gauger basically claims that PS3 bashing, in all weird forms it may take (from price, to availability, to "do we actually need this all around f-n' box?" rants) has reasonably lightened up.

Why? Well here are the factors she's basing her claim on:

Wii's Price - Nintendo promised that the Wii will be under $250. So based on this, it was deemed safe by teh interwub to speculate that the price range will be around $200 or so. Well, not that the price is out, there is much disappointment. You can't really blame them. They were in essence truthful. Thing is, if they said the price will be around $250 instead, people wouldn't have set such high hopes.

Penny Arcade - Like them or not, these guys are such a force in the industry that whenever they come up with a rant, developers cower in fear. Now that their strip basically said, "hot damn we want it" about PS3's upcoming White Knight, people have become a bit more patient.

Sony's Game Trailers - Sony had such a dominating presence during the TGS, that fans were bombarded with jaw dropping trailers of games like White Knight, Devil May Cry 4, and Lair. Game critics might not be moved, citing that it's mostly pre rendered stuff, but gamers are in effect lusting.

So, have the haters indeed quited down a bit? What do you guys think?

Playstation 3 bashing would certainly go down if QJ.net would stop posting stupid and bogus rumours

"Game critics might not be moved, citing that it's mostly pre rendered stuff"

Which game critics? Do you mean all the fanboy bashing that goes on here? Because when I go over to real game critic sites such as IGN, they are fully impressed and believe gameplay such as White Knight is indeed ingame.

I like how bloggers here try to sneak in cynical blows to the PS3 to try to turn anything positive to negative.

To the fanboys who hate ps3, this is ps3.qj.net; notice that we don't care about what negatives you have to say about the PS3, go rant somewhere else like in the X-Box forums about how the PS3 is better than the X-Box.

(Game critics might not be moved, citing that it's mostly pre rendered stuff, but gamers are in effect lusting.) how are you going to say that the trailer are pre renderd when you've played it. everybody was saying that motorstorm was prerenderd. but when you play it, it looks just like the trailers from E3.

this is something i predicted ever since the price was announced at E3 and everyone across the net became turncoats.

prior to E3, everyone was saying how the PS3 would "pwn" everything in existence.

after E3, everyone was so horrified by the price that suddenly the "PS3 am Fail. llolrz!" and "stop showing us CG, Sony!"

now that the TGS has come and gone, and the PS3 actually did prove it's promise (sorry, i couldn't resist the dig at the Wii's hype driven, and ultimately dissappointed Lepzieg conference), and did a few very good things:

1.) Showed 6 (count them, 6) games running in 1080p, that looked amazing, and played just as smooth.

2). Lowered the price of the console in Japan (a major coup for the Japanese market)

3.) Included HDMI in the 20 gig PS3's worldwide, making the moniker "tard pack" obsolete, and shortening the price gap between it's competitor the X Box 360 by $100. basically, you're paying $400 for the PS3 game console, and $100 for a Blu Ray player. the 360 add on is $200. plus $300/$400 for the 360 that is necessary to run it. basically, a fully comparable 360 package is equal to, or more expensive than the PS3 package, and the PS3 has it all in one nice bundle (including the power supply)

4.) They actually showed *GAMES*. and lots of them. games that looked very close to, if not better, than their original, CG showings at E3 2005. Target Renders? not anymore. reality.

5.) Actually had surprises that weren't spoiled prior to the show. from the HDMI inclusion, and price drop, to the surprise reveals of Ninja Gaiden Sigma and White Knight Story. *Thats* the kind of unexpected moments that makes a game show great.

bottom line, PS3 had nowhere to go but up after E3, whereas the 360 and Wii started off at the top in terms of consumer perception, and have either plateaued, or don't have much more to bring to us that surprises or engages us. the PS3 has met, and in a lot of cases, *exceeded* our expectations. people want it now, whether they have the surpreme home entertainment set up, or a 20" TV from 96.

it should also be remembered that the internet community isn't as influential as we think it is. just ask Snakes on a Plane and World Trade Center. Snakes was hyped across the net like nobodies business, and bombed in the theatres. WTC had a bunch of negative press across the net, and was met in the real world with praise and commercial success. i thinks the internet needs an ego check, it's not all influencing like it thinks it is.

What do I think?

I think Jerry "Tycho Brahe" Holkins can be right many times, but he also cannot always leash the nerd within him, thereby causing him to get overexcited about things sometimes.

White Knight might look interesting, but the video goes on the display little-to-no information about the title. Getting excited over it at this stage would be a grievous error, especially for Penny-Arcade, who's opinion shapes the opinions of thousands of nerd-fans.

Qj.net is full of such bull****, and untalented bloggers that post every rumor, unconfirmed fact, over the web. If it weren't for them, the PS3 might not have had such bad rep.

Speculating is such a waste of time. No one really knows if it's gonna flop or a success. Just wait till it's released, then you can make a decision on whats actually out there for consumers to buy. Though, I wouldn't pre-order this beastie, early adopters often get shafted on complicated next generation hardware like this, as it takes a few revisions to get all the problems ironed out (& don't doubt there will be problems with the early batches).
Sony arent known for being nice to their customers when things don't work as they should (cough, early PS2, cough).
