PS3 LinuxIt's here guys! And it's a heck of a lot quicker than I had anticipated. Remember that mysterious Addon packages CD that we were talking about; the CD that supposedly contained the kboot image for the Fedora Core 5? Well, it's out, and you can download it right now!

The only thing remaining right now is the OtherOS installer which will be released by Sony in the coming few days. And looking at the speed at which the things are being released, I'd give it a week for the void to be filled. For all the lucky Japanese people, you're just a few inches away from having Linux on your PS3s. For our American readers, well, you'll be lucky to get one on launch day. But I guess I can leave that for some other day.

For now, I suggest that all the Linux enthusiasts get started by having the Fedora Core 5 DVD image and this Addon CD downloaded. All you'll need once the PS3 comes out is the OtherOS installer. I'm giving out the link to the Fedora Core 5 DVD download. Personally, I haven't tested Linux on the PS3 yet for obvious reasons. But just to be safe, I'd advise you guys to download the DVD version.

Fedora Core 5 PPC DVD - 3.4GB
HTTP Download: [http://mirror.linux.duke.edu/pub/fedora/linux/core/5/ppc/iso/FC-5-ppc-DVD.iso]
Bittorrent Download: [http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/torrents/bordeaux-DVD-ppc.torrent]
More HTTP Mirrors: [http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/mirrors.html]

Once you have it downloaded, you can download the Addon CD off our servers below. Be advised that you'll still need to wait for the OtherOS installer to show up on the PLAYSTATION 3 Open Platform site. Until then, why not chill out in our Linux forums with other Linux enthusiasts.  » OS pleasent suprise

There is no console platform in history that will run an OS like the PS3 is going to do. I don't care what anybody says this is a great threat to the PC market. You could not load an OS on the 360 without voiding the warranty.

Well Personally I hate what Sony is trying to do to the PC market. I think it%u2019s a big mistake as this isn%u2019t only affecting only one company but 100s of them who provide things for the PC market. This will only strengthen the Japanese economy but weaken other economys in other countries. I myself would also be affected if Sony does what they want to do as I earn my living through the PC market. Sony is just greedy.

I installed Fedora 6 on my computer and was confused on the PS3 using fedora 5.

Once I get my PS3 this weekend the first thing ill do is try to install fedora 6 and see how it goes.

» The PC market is huge

They are offering a Linux box as of now. Most people are still using windows, unfortunately, so your job will still be secured.

If you wanted job security you should know linux anyway. Dont bash a company thats trying to re-innovate how we enjoy our living room. Be glad that one day, if you know linux, that someone will pay you to setup a PS3 Linux system.

Who can resist being able to network any video file and play it back on the PS3. In fact Linux can network just about anything and playback and view just about anything.

Get with the times, you need to know Widnows, OS X, and Linux/Unix if you want to have job security in IT. Being able to configure any OS for a companies network is why I get job offers weekly.

Im not being funny but you are being alittle patronising dont you think? You know nothing about me but assume I dont use linux. Well I wont be so assuming about you but let me put the record straight vietone. I use all those operating systems but my comment still stands for the PC Hardware industry. You tend to forget that PCs arent only software but hardware too. Wether you like it or not if Sony does what it wants to do then it will affect companies. I have been working in PCs for 15 years so please give me the respect that I want to give you and please dont patronise me! Thank you!

 » Options

You see I have nothing against Sony but I do have something against any company that tries to monopolise things. Im sure you like me didnt like it when Microsoft was monopolising the OS business and was anticompetetive. I acctually prefer OSX to Windows XP. Well if sony gets their way and replace PCs then we wont have an option in hardware like we do now. How many moutherboard manufactures have we got in the pc market? We have 2 main graphics card providers. How many companys provide memory, hdds? The list goes on. We won have those choices in the PS3. All those PC hardware companies will be affected.

 » Question

Si, I somewhat understand what you mean, but lets look at a few things.

Similarities between the PS3 and a computer.
1. USB support.
2. Card readers
3. Keyboards
4. Mice
5. Hard Drives - laptop ones.
6. RAM- Sony has taked about a PS3 that will allow upgradeable RAM.

Some differences
1. Processors
2. Motherboard
3. RAM - mentioned above but currently a limitation.
4. 2d/3d video cards (video capture can be done via USB or firewire)

So, as you mentioned there are only two major video card companies (ATI, and Nvidia), and the PS3 has Nvidia....

The way I see it, unless you work for Intel,AMD or ATI then you have little to worry about.

Now in all seriousness do you believe that these PS3's are going to start hurting the consumers in any way? Sony gets their profit from games and blueRay movies, so they sell the hardware at a loss. They are predicted to loose 1 BILLION dollars this year! That means that Joe consumer gets some nice hardware to run Linux on CHEAPER than what he could with a standard PC.

This appears to be a great deal for everyone except the gamers that have to pay extra for their games and they don't seem to be complaining that much, given that the business is predicted to have a record year again this year.

 » Pcs and PS3

Thanks for the comments fatherofone and I accept some of your points however we will have to agree to disagree on others. I accept your comments about the PS3 being a cheap alternative to the PC. Yes AMD, Intel and ATI and a load of other manufactures which you didnt mention do have things to worry about. Also you mentioned having a system able to run linux cheaper than you could with a PC. Again I beg to differ as I could build a PC cheaper than $500 that would easily run linux. I dont really have much to worry about as I think businesses and other establishments such as schools and colleges would never consider a Playstation 3 as a serious buy for their establishment. However in recent years people have been getting rid of their desktop pcs but not in favour of the PS3 but in favour of laptops. Somehow I cant see a laptop version of the PS3 coming out.

   Re: Vietone - 2006-11-17
 » I see your point

You make a valid point to why PCs will always be the main market.

You literally can take any old 486 and turn it into a enterprise server. Print Server, DHCP server, god help you if you have to use a BIND server.

Also, the PS3 can only help the market, IBM has been struggling to hold its position as a company who can compete against Intel and AMD.

When you talk about computers, not many people say, they have an IBM chip.

I agree with Viettoner, Si you're just acting as a roadblock to innovation. I mean if Nintendo wasn't so innovative, they wouldn't have made the Wii, the DS, or anything else they have ever made. Sony is definitely not monopolizing the software or hardware market, they're just merely reinventing it. In addition, competition between these markets only promotes innovation.

 » Foolishness

Think...

1. Most PCs are purchased by businesses.

2. Businesses are not going to use a PS3 (except maybe a few innovators).

3. A Linux based system cannot be (easily) monopolized.

All I can say is Thank You Sony... now just don't screw it up.

» Why this is actually good for the US Economy

What someone said about being good for the Japanese economy is true, to a limited extent. You see IBM is the provider for the chips for all 3 consoles... the Wii and PS3 chips are made in the same factory, side by side even. This means that an American company for the first time in a long time is making the primary chips for something other than a desktop pc. And since the cell BE chips are being produced for cell phones and tv's as well, it means that we are actually taking back chip shares from overseas...

Not to mention the fact that isolated economies will always fail eventually. The more exchange of goods and services we get the more the worldwide economy will balance out. The downside here is that in the US an extremely disproprtinate amount of the wealth is at the top.

» where did the addon packages cd come from?

Hi all,

This is probably obvious: Who released the Addon Packages CD?

The Playstation 3 site implies the Linux distributions are responsible for that, but I can't see anything on Fedora's website.

Does this CD only work with Fedora?

Thanks

 » Ridiculous !

The post about SONY taking over and a guy losing his job is just plain ridiculous.

Look, just so you can keep your job, i am not willing to play with Fisher Price Toys.

SONY is one of the best engineering companies in the world and their portfolio of products is something other companies cant even dream of. That being said, i just got a PS3 and i intend to use it like a PC, the moment i can load linux.

That being said, "Buy them and kill" them attitude of Microsoft has made many loose jobs. Someone needs to keep them in line.
