On Blu-ray This Week: Independence Day, I, Robot, and Gattaca - Image 1

If you thought that the previous weeks' short lists in terms of Blu-ray movie titles has left you wanting, this week's batch of Blu-ray releases will make up for it. We've got a bucket load of releases for you this week and they're going to supply us with enough action, sci-fi, comedy, drama, and suspense to our hearts' content.

What's up for this week? Well, the sci-fi and action slice of the pie will be coming from No Country for Old Men, Hitman, Independence Day, I, Robot, Gattaca, and Appleseed Ex Machina. The comedy will be supplied by Dan in Real Life and Dogma, while Sleuth and August Rush contributes some drama into this week's hefty list. This week's goodies for your Blu-ray home entertainment systems pack a mean punch, don't you think?

First, let's take a look at biopunk film, Gattaca. In a world where genetic perfection is the key to things like getting a job, Vincent's future isn't looking all that bright. He's an In-Valid, or somebody born naturally, and so he "buys" a Valid's identity to pursue his dream of being an astronaut. Will the human spirit win over genetic engineering?

Those who are familiar with Isaac Asimov's science fiction works will recognize I, Robot from a planet away. The 2004 sci-fi movie I, Robot was based on Asimov's collections of short stories with the same title. The movie centers on the death of Dr. Alfred Lanning, the inventor of a new line of robots and the supposed murder gets investigated by Detective Del Spooner. Mayhem and high speed action ensues when the robots suddenly revolt. You just know it you're in big trouble when hordes of robots are hot on your heels.

Another Will Smith movie on this list comes in the form of Independence Day. Here's an apocalyptic scenario: A ginormous alien mothership comes to Earth and deploys several smaller ships to the world's largest cities. As you can probably tell, the humans don't take the invasion lying down and it wasn't long before the welcoming committee gets sent to say hello to the aliens.

Also worthy of note: Agent 47's trip to the big screen is now available for home entertainment purposes so if you're one of those courageous gamers who can watch a video-game-to-movie port without cringing, you can pick it up now. Anyway, here are this week's Blu-ray releases in convenient list form:
  • No Country for Old Men (Disney / Buena Vista)
  • Hitman: Unrated (20th Century Fox)
  • Independence Day (20th Century Fox)
  • Gattaca (Sony Pictures)
  • Appleseed Ex Machina (Warner Bros.)
  • Dan in Real Life (Disney / Buena Vista)
  • I, Robot (20th Century Fox)
  • Dogma (Sony Pictures)
  • August Rush (Warner Bros.)
  • Sleuth (Sony Pictures)

Now that's a movie I've been dying to see! It's John Woo's animated production masterpiece. I really hope it's as good as the first one was to me.

Of course, NCFOM will always be one of the greatest films. It became an instant classic to me when I first saw it in the theaters. It's as good as what everyone is saying and much more. I highly recommend people who are into high-octane drama films to give it at the very least a rental, and if they enjoy it, a purchase. We can only support the filmmakers to continue making great movies like this.

I thought this was Masamune Shirow's Appleseed (directed by Shinji Aramaki)? Oh, nevermind. Produced by John Woo. I just think Masamune Shirow as writer is a better indication of how good this movie is bound to be. ;-)

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to this. I've added it to my amazon wish list already.

I can't wait for this movie, it comes out tomorrow...sadly I have no cash to spare on this movie yet. I will work this summer in order to buy this and a couple of other things, mainly games and figures.
