Nvidia to provide first GPGPUs for Apple Macs - Image 1

Word rang out that NVIDIA is working to create a line of professional GPGPUs, or the general purpose graphics processing units, for the Apple Mac. Additionally, the graphic processing unit (GPU) manufacturer may already be in the early stages of development for the next generation of graphics processing units aimed at Apple professional workstations.

Coupled with NVIDIA's CUDA, the general purpose computing version of UDA (Unified Driver Architecture), the GPGPU will provide the answer to not only housing unrivaled graphics computing power but also the answer to putting all that power to good use - even when you're not running graphic intensive applications. GPGPUs have become something of a twinkle to hardware enthusiasts' eyes since the idea blossomed some years ago.

The first GPGPUs only came to realization when CUDA SDK and the GeForce 8 series were made available. The NVIDIA Tesla, coded as the C870, became NVIDIA's first official entry into the next-generation GPGPU market, though it was probably more remembered as being the cornerstone of the company's entry into supercomputing.

Now details on the new line are very scarce, but it would seem that the company's offices in Santa Clara, California are urgently seeking a Mac OS X driver coder. Speculations indicate that the GPGPU line may be offered as a build-to-offer option for the Mac Pro workstation line.
