Bye bye force feedbackThere's a post over at GT Planet that says that Force Feedback, an Immersion-patented technology, will not function on Sony's PS3.

For those of you who are in tears, and are still feeling that desperate need for Force Feedback on their steering wheels for their beloved racing games, stop, let go, lose all hope, and just accept it. Even Sony says that it just isn't so.

1UP reports that SCEA confirmed that there would be no supported force feedback technology with its PlayStation 3. SCEA states that all PS3 games are programmed for the SIXAXIS which doesn't have force feedback.

For fans of racing games and certain genres that are immensely improved via force feedback, this is bad, bad news.

 » Untrue

This is untrue. There are people which played NFS Carbon on PS3 with a steering wheel, and yes it has FFB!

 » I don't see why not...

I don't see how a game most definitely CAN'T have force feedback if it uses an external peripheral (i.e. a steering wheel). Saying you can't use rumble because SIXAXIS doesn't support it is like saying you can't use a microphone because the DualShock doesn't support it.

a dev needs to add in the feature of rumble. Since ps3 doesn't have any rumble, why would devs even waste the time?

Cause it isn't hard to do and there are controllers out there that supports it

 » not their fault

Immersion wasn't trying to stop sony from using it, they just wanted a royalty for the technology. It's sony's fault in the first place because they tried to fight it when microsoft realized it was patent infringement and settled out of court.

» SCEA spokespeople are a bunch of ignorant nuttchuggers

Why is force feedback being confused with Immersion Technologies patented rumble motors? I do not understand how you can patent a rumble motor but that is for another day. The GT force wheels were designed by Kazunori Yamauchi at Polyphony Digital before the release of GT2. he did this because he did not like that there were no wheels out there that simulated the steering wheel wanting to allways keep the front wheels straight just like in a real car. This is his design, his force feedback, not Imersion's. I think that the SCEA spokesman does not understand what he is saying. Force feedback and Rumble are two completely different and unrelated things.
When I was in the industry I can remember more than one time where I had to correct an misinformed or ignorant SCEA spokesperson/educator for vendors. For example I would ask them something simple like how is this game coming along and they would look at me with this puzzled look and tell me that they have no idea what I am talking about.
SCEA spokespeople for the most part would come to meetings with vendors with prepared statements and not much else so I would not take too seriously what a SCEA spokesperson says.
What this site and others like it should do is go talk to Kaz and ask him directly about this.
In the meantime....I will borrow my buddy's GT Force wheel and use it with the GTHD demo from Sony's Playstation store and see if Force feedback is there.
Just to let you know, the demo controller options show all four of the Gt Wheels in detail and also allow you to configure each of them.
I will let you know of the outcome of this the next time a post similar to this or one about GT surfaces on this site.
Until then

 » well *****

I guess that GT on the PS3 will not be 'the' simulator of choice... guess hardcore race simmers will be playing liveforspeed, rfactor, gtr 2, race, and netkar pro all on the pc with force feedback and better physics modeling....

gt has been a big disapointment for a while now hasn't it

   Re: datnizzle (Unregistered) - 2007-01-07

No "hardcore race simmers" play race games on the PC, period.

I don't care about rumble anymore. I've been playing NFS: Carbon and Resistance and I don't even notice.

 » good for you

i downloaded gt hd and tried to play it with the steering wheel that i have with no force feedback. do you have an idea how bad that was, and now this. you know what screw sony, to thimk that i defended them all this time, and now this piece of crap coming out of them. the only reason i bought ps3 is to play gran turismo 5. i guess that's it the ps 3 is going out. and for good this time. shame on them.

» what i sent to sony

Dear Sir/ mam
Where do i begin, i have no idea. the reason i am forwarding this letter is to share my disapointment with the playstation franchise. i have been a loyal customer to sony since as far as i can remember, and when the original playstation came along i did not hesitate to buy it, the same with ps2. i have spend a lot of money on games and peripherals for my playstation systems. even the televisions that i have are sony brand.
to make this e-mail short i will point out why i am really disapointed and why is it that sony as of today has just lost another customer.
*the ps3 is very expensive, i built a computer that outputs the same graphical quality and even better for 700 dollars.(i have the ps3 and the pc sitting next to each other, i use the pc evryday while the ps3 i only used for three hours so far since i purchased it 8 days ago) now you will say that the ps3 is blue ray ready, and my answer is blue ray is not the dominant media format as of today.
*the online conection with the playstation network is horrible. it took me two hours and thirty minutes to download gt hd demo, and i have a cable connection which i plugged directly to the ps3.
*no force feedback or dual shock in either the steering wheel or the game pad, i thought technology is about moving forward but with ps3 we are moving backwards in terms of interactivity with games.(the main incentive for buying playstation is to play racing games)and in the manuall the battery life of the wireless controller is of limited lifespan, which is pathetic to say the least. but the worst is that i have to unscrew the controller in order to change the battery when it goes dead, would sony send me another controller if something goes wrong while changing the battery since i would be exposing the internal parts of the controller to change a battery and something might go wrong, damaging the sixsaxis hardware for instance by mistake because of the poor design of sony designers.
*backward compatibility with ps and ps2 is horrible, and to think that sony started this trend with ps2.
*as a consumer i am obligated to pay so much money if i want to be entertained, and accept all the legal obligations that sony binds me with for buying theire product. pages upon pages of legal disclaimers, and on the other hand sony does not deliver what they have promised.
Utter disapointment is what i have received from buying the ps3 system, and i will be returning it tonight to where i bought it from. i don't know if sony care about theire customers, or even about this letter or if it will make any difference but i had to forward this letter. maybe some good will come out of it to the new sony consumers that come along.
sincerely yours
sam

 » Same for me.

I was really trying to give Sony an equal chance as I do the others, but they just keep shooting themselves in the foot by falling short all of the little details they promised. I am selling my PSP as well because it is a paper weight without PS3 in the future.

   Re: datnizzle (Unregistered) - 2007-01-07
 » You sent this.

They threw that ***** in the trash, dude. Next time you send a letter to a billion dollar company, use paragraphs, capital letters, and/or spell check.

Why did you buy the PS3 in the first place, all the ***** you hate was weel known before it came out. Only played 3 hours in 8 days? Really, did you buy RFOM? 3 hours is not even enough time to TEST the on-line mode. Stick to your 360- the next gen console using last gen media.

this especially sucks if you have that logitech g25 or somethin steering wheel (499 AUD, or about 399 US or maybe 350)

» But there IS Force Feedback on the PS3

Friends with PS3's and the Wheels.
I'm not sure about you, but I don't buy into all the internet rumors. Believe me, there CURRENTLY IS FORCE FEEDBACK on the PS3.

You can either believe me or simply try it yourself.

Plug in the Logitech DFP GT4 steering wheel into your PS3 via the USB port. Insert Need for Speed Carbon. Race one single race - any one will do.

Feel the force feedback for yourself. It's there now.

I traced down all of the links which led to a newbie on the GTPLANET forums. Misquotes, plus embelishment lead to other "paparazzi like" websites who consistently bash the PS3 into spreading false rumors. Other uneducated "internet journalists" to further misquote and spread lies.

Force feedback is very much alive and well through the third party controllers and PS3 game developers.

Don't believe the lies that Microsoft is trying to propegate.

yep thats it Microsoft started this rumor just like they started the no rumble rumor LOL and just so you know ive been buying my multi platform games on my 360 instead of my ps3 because of rumble, play it on a console for rumble and you can feal the difference.

 » what?

dude you're crazy. theyre not saying no game ever made will ever have force feedback on ps3, just that the next gt wont. get over it. sony once again takes one step forward and 3 steps back. they're messin' up hard this round man. acccept it and quit making excuses for a company who isnt paying your bills. quit being a fanboy and see that sony is shooting themselves in the foot at every available opportunity, and sales figures and stock prices and earnings statements are showing it. why should you be upset? do you own a thousand shares of sony? no. you just want self-justification of a $600 purchase. grow up and get a girlfriend.
