Reports are coming in that Nintendo has turned to adding epoxy to new D2E drives to keep modders at bay. Check out these pics of the new drives courtesy of the Wii Hacks forum:
As you can see, the drive ICs have been set in black epoxy. While this would certainly make it harder to mod the drives, it's apparently still possible as the alt points on the bottom are still there. If you have the patience, the epoxy can also be dissolved using commercial solutions. Not a lot of these new drives have been spotted so far, but we're thinking that it's only a matter of time before Nintendo rolls out more of them. Related articles:

I have tried pulling epoxy off electronics such as this. It is NOT easy, and certainly NOT fun. In fact, I have never actually removed it and had the electronic item still function after. And with how weak the traces on the wii are in the first place it would be advisable to NOT try and remove that epoxy.
This will certainly make Wani's ISO loader get much more demand. Soft modding the wii instead of a hardware mod will be the better route. especially when it already costs $150 cdn for a mod chip and install around here

as I said already. There are ways to get that stuff up. But with how weak the traces are on the wii already I personally would HATE to be trying to work with it.
Problem is you dont know if you have it until you open it up.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!
I'm surprised it took them this long! People have covered entire ICs in order to protect their data for decades. I always wondered why console manufactures didn't do this themselves.
