GoldenEye 007 N64 - Image 1There are several rumors surrounding the mysterious circumstances about the cancellation of the XBLA release of GoldenEye 007. One is that the game was cancelled over some issues related to money matters.

However, another rumor has cropped up, and it's just about as exciting as the money angle: supposedly, Nintendo itself canned the XBLA release of GoldenEye 007.

The reason? According to this juicy tidbit of gossip, Nintendo's own Satoru Iwata decided that GoldenEye 007 shouldn't be released on a competitor's system. For those who aren't aware, the video game adaptation of James Bonds' adventures was initially released on a Nintendo system, the N64.

Of course, this is just a rumor, but hopefully we'll be seeing the light at the end of this dark, gloomy tunnel soon.

I highly doubt Nintendo had anything to do with it.

 » no way

I disagree... I personally thought that nintendo licensing one of their most popular titles to a rival console sent off all sorts of confusing messages...

It's like Microsoft saying "yeah, sure Sony, you can release Halo on the PS4"...

If I were Nintendo I'd be trying to hamper microsofts efforts in acquiring goldeneye too... it's business at the end of the day.

   Re: Nevers - 2008-01-14
 » It's business...true

..and they are corporations. Money is main thing these companies really care about. Amazes me how many gamers are so "Pauliana" regarding their favored console (should they have one) In the end... it's all about the green.

Oh well. This woulda been pretty fun on XBL. Wonder if the Wii will ever support online mp for that...

And thats the thing: Nintendo would HAVE to make a Wii Disc for 007GE for Wifi multiplayer, their Virtual Console version of 007GE could NOT compete with the XBLA version due to Online Multiplayer and updates for new maps (If they get around to it) and new updates rather than the Virtual Consoles straight port, which is pretty much a ROM being run on a "virtual console" (Emulator). So if it originally did NOT have online play, it doesn't have it today. (Unless you have Battle.net for ZSNES, but I highly doubt that Nintendo would ever come out with such a service... though it would kick some pretty hard ass.)

I'm not stupid, I know it's all about the money. But as the other guy stated Rare made the game, and they are owned by Microsoft now. I don't know whether Nintendo put publishing rights on it and if they did, how long they last for.

And it's a different thing then Halo on PS4, even though Bungie is independent now, because Microsoft owns the Halo IP, even though Bungie is no longer working for them exclusively.

 » Nah

Well actually, it's not like Microsoft saying "yeah, sure Sony, you can release Halo on the PS4", because the game was made by Rare, who are now owned by Microsoft. Sony don't own Bungie. Plus the game used the 007 License, so Nintendo are really only publishers as far as I know.

Also, that picture at the top isn't from Goldeneye :/

   Re: exionzero - 2008-01-14
» well, actually that was my point. hindsight's a wonderful thing

yeah, I realise that, but lets not forget that Nintendo pretty much owned Rare back in the day, then Rare went independent and got bought up by Microsoft.
Bungie, formerly owned by microsoft, are now independent, so in a few years, feasibly they could be bought up by Sony, and we could see a similar situation to this one.

That was only an example anyway, and I'm by no means attempting to play Nostradamus here. Im just saying, at the end of the day, business is business. If Sony were to buy out Bungie, it's equally feasible that anyone who's not happy to work for the sony platform could jump ship and forge a new dev team, ala Free Radical Design.

Try to keep an open mind here guys!

Wow if Nintendo did do this they are so gay. I bet they will release it on the virtual console, but it will be crappier

   Re: exionzero - 2008-01-14
 » I'll take that bet.

well, the current situation is basically that microsoft owns half of the game (as they own Rare) and Nintendo owns the other half (as they hold the publishing rights).

Neither company can re-release the title on their machine without the say-so of the other company... it's a real stalemate situation.

An ideal resolution to the situation would be the title getting released on both platforms, however, it's unlikely to occur, and even less likely for the wii to get online play (what with the developers of the title working for the rival machine and all)

   Re: Matt91 - 2008-01-14
 » trust me

nintendo will never do add ons to virtual console games, especially online because they are queer and dont like to do that. That is the main reason i prefer my 360 over my wii

exionzero,a better example would be releasing Fable 1 or GeoW 1 on the ps5.Anyway, too bad they couldn't release 007 on xbla, but money is key so oh well.

   Re: exionzero - 2008-01-14

no, I chose halo specifically due to the game being made by an outsourced company, formerly the property of the owners of the platform in which the game was originally released on...
Halo and bungee can be compared with Goldeneye and Rare due to their company history... that was my point, but it was more of an analogy than anything else...

still, I see where you're coming from.

» As great as nintendo is...

They have to be the biggest Jerks on their property. For goodness sakes you will see Sonic on every Console, Solid Snake too, But dare put a Game that rocked on a Nintendo console, thats starting WW3 with them.

I was shocked with Conker's came out for the Xbox.

Nintendo, i know you won't see this, but come on, be nice and for once think about the gamers and what they want, not what you want.

» Of course Nintendo was behind it

They have always been total bi*ches when it comes to liscensing games. They had a near monopoly over third parties in the NES days due to their infamous contracts, lockout chips, and illegal business practices. The XBOX 360 has always been better than the Wii both in value and in performance and they just can't take it.

Too bad gamers have to suffer because of Nintendo's greed.

you sad little man

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2008-01-15
 » lol @ fanboy blinders

Nintendo's questionable/illegal business practices have been well documented and they have had to pay huge sums in penalties and fines for being the proverbial big kid in a little sandbox.

But hey, don't take my word for it (mine or mr. common sense's) educate yourself and learn.

or you can just keep frolicing in ignorant fanboy bliss; it make no difference to me, really.

» It is not greed, it is Control

Nintendo is trying to get back the control it had back in the NES days. That is not greed. If Nintendo was greedy, they would work out a deal to have this game on the XBLA. But this is just plan control. They get no money from this becuse they are not useing the game. They are sitting on it. And yes I do think that Nintendo is behind this.
