Nintendo DSi - Image 1

There's no contesting the hardware numbers. Nintendo's DS still reigns supreme after years of being out in the market. Today, though, marks a special occasion as the big N unveils the newest member of their DS family, the DSi.

Yep, this is the big news that's got all of Tokyo buzzing about at the Nintendo's conference that is going on right now. So what are the specs so far?
  • unit size reduced by 12% and 2.6 millimeters - GBA cartridge slot is removed
  • screen size increased to 3.25 inches
  • audio-playing function
  • camera (which we cannot decipher yet if it's 0.3 megapixels or 3.0 megapixels)
  • picture editor via touch screen
  • adjustable pitch and playback speed
  • SD memory card slot for you to dump pictures (ie. right to Wii's photo channel)
  • onboard memory for downloadable games
  • *with Wii Points, to be renamed Nintendo Points
  • built-in Nintendo DS web browser
  • and more that are just coming out
Wow, that certainly sounds exciting, don't you think? Although that 300,000 pixels hype sure was a stretch -- and a hoot! But wait, there are more interesting details on this.

The new Nintendo DSi will be out sooner than you thought -- November 1, at least for Japan. Still, that was quick. It comes in two color variations: white and sooty-grey-black. The price? 18, 900 yen (about $180). A bit higher, yes, but with all the new added features, we're sure fans would be more than willing to cough it up.

We'll be on our toes for this one. Keep it posted here for more.

finally nintendo is adding some sort of memory capability. better that its SD rather than psp's mem stick duo. sd is wayyy cheaper. onboard mem should be useful too.

Is this a joke?

as inevitable as this was.. why do console makers have to keep changing the consoles they make, its unfair for the people who brought the first one.

its about time nintendo release a new console anyway why did they have to bring this thing out

There's 2 cameras on the DSi,

theres the 3.0mp camera facing the outside of the console and there's another one on the inside to face the user which is 0.3mp

I dont see how this an upgrade considering the battery life is shortened now compared to the DS lite

what a joke. Newer games that come out require it such as GH:OT.

Its just a DS with Media capability. I don't see this as a bad thing at all. If you just want to play DS games you can by the DS lite for a cheaper price. If you want a DS that can play music (maybe movies) and shoot photos and edit photos then this would be the better option.

I for one probably wont be purchasing a DSi because I already have gadgets that can do this (psp, Iphone) but this is pretty niffty. The 3.0 camera will have its advantages over the psp since the psp doesnt have a camera.. and I'm hoping the .03 mega pixel camera will be for downloadable games/apps that can use face/whatever recognition within the game (like PSeye).

Homebrew wise, this is a huge blessing. Expandable memory? wider screen? Camera capability? This is going to be very welcomed by homebrewers... once its hacked (unless nintendo will be as so kind to not change anything.. such as the fat ds - > ds lite change).

As for the GB slot.. it was inevitable. And as for the Guitar hero game.. it was a freaken joke. Plus there is nothing that rules out that a new guitar hero ds game (for whoever the hell would actually wanted) couldnt be done with camera motion capture/sd card expansion).

If ds games are completely compatible with the dsi then this is just going to make it alot harder for the psp to gain momentum. After the new psp 3000 model (which was not much of an upgrade at all) this is a major plus. Not saying that this reigns above and beyond the psp.. the psp still has alot more to offer then the dsi as far as the specs go.

All they need to do now is release a smash bros game and a media/mp3 app for the ds that is actually worth switching over too (not like the sprint/creative crap players) and nintendo will do what I always had a feeling they were trying to do.

Slowly go into other areas of the market and get a slice of the pie... Next up, Dsphone (but i doubt it'll be before a PSPhone).

woah, with all these new functions it's more like a DS 2!

compared to the PSP-3000... shame on you Sony!

Man, such BS.... how man "versions" of one console do they need? The addition of the camera makes this version different than the others.. and now anyone who wants to take advantage of a game that requires the camera.. will need to upgrade to the new (although same old graphics/audio/etc) DSi.

Where is the DS2? Why do we have to waste our money buying the same console over and over again? It's like the wii, which was a gamecube with some modifications... I'm getting sick of paying for the same thing 3/4 times Nintendo! You do it with games and you do it with consoles... MAKE SOMETHING NEW.

the ps3 versions were all released around the same time, so they're not gonna be that much different... but i agree about the psp though...

» Better be 3 mega pixels...

The exterior camera better be of decent quality, or it's a no go. Has there been no mention of whether this thing can play videos or not?
