PS3-PSP Remote Play - Image 2 PS3-PSP Remote Play - Image 1

How would you like to be able to access the PlayStation Network on your PlayStation Portable? Amidst talk of the newly announced PS3 firmware 1.8, TTP from the NeoGAF Forums found something very interesting when he started Remote Play on his PlayStation 3.

He took a picture of the message he got (check out the first image above), bearing instructions on how to connect your PSP to the internet. The second image is reportedly taken from a PSP on the upcoming firmware 3.50. TTP added that gamers will need a PS3 with the latest firmware 1.8 and a PSP with firmware 3.50 to avail of the said service. Why do you need a PS3, you ask? Well, you're going to need your PSN ID to log in.

What do you think? Sugar on top of connecting to your PS3 via WiFi? We'll keep you posted on this, stay tuned.

nah kidding aside, i have pc, ps3, pc + ds. but i will not upgrade to official 3.50, NO WAY.
my ps3 is at 1.7 now, there is less good free stuff on PSN as of today so i think ill update later.

I have a 3.40-OE PSP and 1.8 PS3.

You can already go on PSN Store by remote play, using the PSP.

Unless you mean by internet.

The article isn't very clear.

 » uh

they mean, you can be in the UK, at some sort of wi fi hot spot while accessing your ps3 which could be in the US(hopefully without having to e-mail your cousin to turn it on for you, it should automatically turn on)

I think you have to leave your ps3 on, or we need another update before the 3.5 for psp..

 » eh?

this seems alil useless to me. but this is just my opinion. i dont see the point of needing the psp to connect ur psp network....

the only use i can actually tell is if it allows u to download files from ur ps3 to ur psp from anywhere in the world (abeit that ur ps3 in home and u are elsewhere).

My PS3 is on most time doing folding at home if I'm not playing on it. So that sounds cool as long as I can still connect and fold at the same time...

   Re: PizzashaX (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » Re:

Nope, you have to have the PS3 in Remote Play mode. But they should fix it in a future firmware update.

And this article is quite late, this was already known like a week ago :P

   Re: Networkgamer (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » ok...

if you turn on remote play, and then connect your psp,and start folding@home,then even after you quit it will keep folding, and if you connect back to it you will see it still, while its folding.

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
 » no

you cant start folding@home thru remote play
   by mallchin (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » Say what?

I don't see what real uses Remote Play has. It's a fun toy, but using some VNC-like protocol it is limited by bandwidth. I'd be interested to see how well it works across the internets.

 » A better explanation

So, to begin with you can already access the PSN and start downloads via remote play. Why I mention this is because in the article it states that

"What do you think? Sugar on top of connecting to your PS3 via WiFi? We'll keep you posted on this, stay tuned."

I don't think it is an extra bonus to be able to sign into the PSN. What it looks like is that you need to signed into the PSN on your PSP and the PS3 in order for them to find each other on the internet. So, by connecting them both to the network, a communication can be established in order to stream files. This is what I think at least.

all i can say is ''ahahahahaha!!!!!'' sony nowadays making their self crazier, they crazy bcoz of this unpopular FWs and now u need ps3 and psp! man not all the people in the world are rich as they!! and why do people care about the FWs all the people (with psp) need is game and proper way to enjoy thier PSPs thats why almost of people have now a CustomFirmware.

Custom FW isnt 4 everyone, some people like da normal stuff, n im not a geek soo idk how ta mess with that... And u dont need to buy both, its ur choice if u do. some people 4get that its ur choice to buy things...not Sonys

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-28
 » Unpopular FW?

Only to the software pirates out there! As for the rest of us, we welcome features that were not there in the beginning.

   Re: jkzz (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
 » To the above two:

custom firmare does not + software piracy. get off your damn high horse of noble sony following and realize most people on psp scene sites appreciate homebrew and the ability to play their old ps1 games on their psp. if you don't, tat's too bad.

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-29
 » jkzz!

It's not a high horse, it is reality. For every one person that you describe, and they do exist, there are nine pirates. Don't act like it's not true.

The funniest thing to me is to go to a PSP forum and see all of the goons asking for help making the ISO they ripped from the game they got from Blockbuster work in their PSP. It has nothing to do with my being a loyal $ony follower. I think that they greedy too. But if you think that CF is not the key that millions of pirates have been looking for then you need to remove your head from my supposed high horse's ass!

Re: Your Name (Unregistered) - 2007-05-30
» Not all people have custom firmware.

Many a guy I know doesnt have custom firmware, as many a people dont actually know about it. Since I have 3.30 Official firmware, Im waiting for 3.50, so Dark Alex can make 3.50 OE, which can be installed on official 3.30.

 » Someone Nice...?

Does this mean, if someone Generous was to leave their PS3 on, and have whatever games they have, avaliable for remote play, along with their PSN account details (for example, WePlay , with the password "Shared".) That basically anyone could get the PS1 games onto their PSP?

If so, that'd be so awesome...XD

   Re: damonous - 2007-05-28
 » Intriguing concept but...

I think your license certificates are limited to 4 downloads (either to PS3 or PSP), if I remember the Sony comments from the American release time of PS3. They allow you 'extra' downloads in case your hard drive crashes or your PSP hits the pavement. But, they already accounted for what you're referring to. ....However, movies and videos are an entirely different story.

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » sorry

but you need to register your PSP with your PS3 via a usb cable.
   by damonous - 2007-05-28
» Sony starting to deliver on all promises

I have a hard time reading that people are complaining about this. PS3 v1.8 has finally added DVD and PS1 and PS2 game upscaling, a long-sought feature. Then (in what is a truly gi-normous firmware update, based on quality of features) they finally add the long-promised "real" Remote Play feature .... yet people complain. For all those wondering what to do with this (once PSP v3.5 is out), this should mean that you could rip a bunch of movies, TV shows, etc. to the PS3 MP4 format and store them on PS3. Then (after leaving your house with the PS3 in Remote Play mode), when eating lunch at Panera Bread, you can whip out your PSP and watch them. And if some airlines also start to implement WiFi service this means you don't have to run out and buy overpriced UMDs. This will probably also lead to a new way of sharing video across long distances. For example, if your relative 5 States away creates a camcorder video of a family gathering you missed, they can load it on their PS3, and you can view it on your PSP while talking to them on the phone.

   Re: ugh (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » ugh

thanks for the explanation, but umm free wifi on the airplane, no way- prob never happen. and in the terminal - not much free wifi left, gotta pay... unless you are in a crappy airport like san juan who isnt up on wifi security. so paying the fee for wifi will catch up to you and/or you will choose not to use it. so, it still seems like its a waste, unless you are in Panera Bread, then you can eat a bowl of soup and really get free wifi :-)

   Re: doodad (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » or...

u can just leave ur computer @ home on while its running pimpstreamer and then watch movies at panera bread. and the best part is that u dont need to spend $500 for a useless yet shiny piece of junk...

ive known this since 1.80 came out..... im surprised no one knew this....
its even on the official ps3 update page and the pic of the psp is on there too

by Leg End (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
» Not for accessing PSN as you know it...

You need your PSN password as the PSN will keep track of your PS3's IP address. WIthout this set up you'd need to enter your IP address everytime you want to connect. Not easy to do if you're on the other side of the world to your PS3.

This is the exact same solution as used by SlingBox and Location Free. Bottom line; its not for accessing the PSN per se from the PSP.

   Re: ok? (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » ik

i dont understand how everyone is blowing this out of proportion, its just used to access ur ps3 via remote play over the internet, nothing more. u will prob have the same features as the remote play now

Being able to use remote play via the internet is a great feature. Pity that you would have to leave your PS3 on.

it be cool if sony implemented a wake on lan feature for ps3 so it would turn on when it detects a signal from the psp

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-28
» What is wrong with leaving it on?

I never turn mine off! It is always either folding, viewing an BD movie, or playing a game. Leave it on! It doesn't use much juice at all when idle.

WOL would be nice for those that do like to turn it off, though!
   by Element (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
» i think they got it backwards

I think rather than "Next PSP firmware allows access to PSN via Remote Play" it should be "Next PSP firmware-allows access world wide Remote Play via PSN", yeah that sounds better and less confusing.

by Joe Dirt (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
» Can't see it working very well for me

This is all fine and dandy, but my PS3 REFUSES to stay connected to the PSN. I thought it might just be my wireless dropping out, but it does it wired too. So basically I can see me turning my PS3 on, going to a hot spot somewhere only to find my PS3 is no longer connected to the PSN.

   by WraithLeader (Unregistered) - 2007-05-28
 » Worthless

Where is the update Sony said would allow the PSP to connect to PSN by ITSELF!!?? I'm sorry but I feel that this really is a feature similar to LocationFree, great if you had the dough to buy it, but utterly useless to the greater majority.

P.S. To the guy talking about WiFi on planes; you're going to have to change the whole aviation world's superstition about cell phones and wireless internet messing with nav gear.

   by shrimpdude - 2007-05-28
 » Yawn.

So you still need a PS3. Wow, how is this useful again?

It'd probably be faster to download games on a PS3 with a hardline broadband connection, and then transfer it over to the PSP via USB anyway.

It's like Sony makes a conscious effort to add useless crap with every forthcoming firmware update.

 » NETWORK COMBO

Let's get a crazy network combo going. Let's connect our DLNA computers to our PS3's, share some DivX files over the network, and then use remote play from somewhere else in the world to connect to the PS3 over internet and watch those shared videos.

Talk about a complex situation. I wonder how will it will work considering bandwidth.
